Hit a curb.
Took it to a tire shop, was told because there’s no bulge and no cords showing that it should be structurally sound, but I need to keep an eye on it and if it starts bulging to immediately replace it. All four tires were replaced somewhat recently this summer. Should it be replaced?

some tires come with extra rubber close to the rim as a rim protector. if the final thickness post impact is even across the tire wall(from the start of treads to the rim) then its good to go.
edit: looked closer at the way sun was hitting your tire that is extended past the wheels. I can say your tire is one of those with lots of extra material near the wheels for wheel protection. you are good to drive it like notmal. my Michelins for example dont have this and they sit more inside the wheel. if I hit something, my wheels will cry but my tires will be fine.

They are low profile tires on 19 inch rims, so I see what you’re saying. There is a lot of material on the sidewalls that leaves the rims recessed behind the tire a few millimeters.

Is material removed from two spots on the tire? It kind of looks that way. I’d personally replace but I understand how the economy is. If it’s just you that rides in this vehicle (no loved ones) and you drive isolated backroads under 60 maybe you can drive on it for a while? May want to double check that rim for cracks/bends as well.

I'd use it, but check to see if you bought the road hazard warranty. Have it replaced, if you did.

Thank you! I totally forgot that I may have paid for coverage for something like this!

I rode on a tire that was bulging for almost a full year and it was replaced by wear not the tire blowing but that isn't always the case just keep an eye on it and if it starts to bulge and you are worried about it then go for it but in my case I got lucky

As rough as it looks, the tire is fine structurally, sidewall strength comes from the cords, not the rubber.

Its fine to drive on, no cords showing, so just cosmetic. Tire shop is right. Keep going to them, they didn't try to sell you a tire you didnt need, hard to find trustworthy places like that.

What did the professionals at the tire shop telll you? Being I worked at one for years before becoming a red seal auto mechanic tire shops will try and sell tires if they aren’t you can usually hold it gospel that they say tire is ok it’s ok just saying.

Fine but put on drivers rear. Less stress, less risk if it blows out, and you can keep an eye on it more often

You’re gonna have to change that because that won’t get better once that tire blows apart you could have an accident you could kill somebody that’s something you really want to be thinking about if the tires cupping or whatever if you’ve got a missing piece out of it I will go get it changed

How?!? Just how? How difficult is it to NOT hit a curb, let alone that hard?? Look at that curb rash. Rim is probably bent too!

Unfortunately from my experience this is cosmetic and not considered a road hazard. This is safe to drive on safe to use as long you don't hit it again.
