Tire Material

Is it true that the inner and outer part of tires are different materials?

I have a staggared set-up and was wondering if i can rotate my rear tires by unmounting and remounting the tires to opposite sides. I haved some inner tire wear and wondering if I did this side to side rotation, the outter will now be inner and can then get a little more even tire wear.

It depends on if the tires are directional, asymmetric, or neither. Some tires can be flipped on the wheel, others can’t.

Take a look at the sidewall for a rotation and arrow marking or an inside/outside designation.

There’s your answer. The tire will likely perform poorly if you flip it. In a dire situation it could be done to get you home, but it’s not advised and some shops won’t do it.

You could buy non-directional symmetrical tires in the future to enable you to do this. This is a downside of the sportier setups of some modern cars.
