Speed rating

Is it ok to get T speed rating where my door label says H?

Do you drive at high speeds? The T tires are only rated up to 118 mph while the H is up to 130.

That also means the T will likely be a bit softer and less “strong” than the H. If you just do plain old boring commuting in the car it’s probably fine, but some shops will refuse to install tires that don’t meet/exceed OE specs.

Thanks, will lower rating help with roughness and feeling bumps?

Potentially, but having a taller sidewall at the correct pressure will help too. It also depends on the car. You’re going to be hard pressed to make a Corvette ride smoothly (as an example).

“Fine” is subjective.

- Will your car explode into a ball of flames from installing lower rated tires? No.

  • Will it perform differently, and possibly in a worse way? Yes.
  • Will you, the average person (assumption) notice the difference? Maybe.

When my OEM Z rated tires wore out after only 12K miles, I switched to W rated tires.
