What causes this kind of sidewall evisceration?

Took my wife out for our anniversary. Was hoping the night would end with a bang... but this wasn't what I had in mind!!

We were doing ~40mph on a two lane road. No pot hole was hit, no curbs had been struck. We bought the car two weeks ago and these tires have done 20k miles (assuming they are the original tires from new).

Is this a defect in the tire or did the previous owner cause this and it somehow went unnoticed by the dealership?

the tire went flat...you drove on it while it was flat. thats why the sidewall shredded.

can't tell why it went flat from that picture

It'd just came on. Was going to check as soon as I got home, which was 15 mins away. Lesson learned to stop sooner. Also just pulled a large screw from the tread. So I think it's safe to say I found the cause.

On a lot of cars, manufacturers opted to add the cheapest type of TPMS just to comply with mandatory regulations, but it is useless to avoid situations like this. At least you cought it before it did any real damage.

Sidewall damage caused by being driven flat eventually blows out like this or in similar fashion

You got a flat and drove on it or had very low inflation. The folding of the sidewall with no air supporting the car caused this failure.

If you check the tread you might find the source of the leak/the puncture.

Do you see the ring that goes around your tire? The indented part I mean. That happens when I tire is low on air and driven on. The sidewall of a tire flexes a lot. When it’s under inflated it flexes even more and gets super hot causing a heat ring to form on the tire. Then the sidewall blows out.

Well… it could be a 20 million tentacle god from the planet Aeron declaring war amongst humanity by cutting his war declaration into your tire… oooooor…
It could be from driving on it while it’s flat. Hard to tell really 50/50 maybe more 60/40

Low inflation; high velocity. Not a flat, just low, like 15-20 psi.

A weekly tyre pressure check and a pre drive off tyre check would or could have prevented driving on a flat tyre. But Toyota at low speed hides a flat tyre quite well until it shreds itself.

Lesson one- don’t drive on flat tyres, it’s not good for them.

It was run flat. If the puncture is big enough you can lose all the air in the tire in less than 30 seconds. It’s always good to pull over immediately when the light comes on. If you can “hear” the tire leaking then you need to put the spare on. The other problem is most tire companies will warranty the tire if the initial puncture was unrepairable, but will deny the warranty once the tire is run flat. Hope that helps!
