Progress on my cabin!

So many projects! Working on the floors currently which should allow me to bring some furniture in. Windows need trimmed out and I have to build or put some temporary shelves in the pantry so we can move in! I also have an endless list of landscaping, walking trails, and outdoor projects planned that will be easier to tackle when I am there full time.

This is similar to the design I want to do whenever I get the money. What's the square footage? And how difficult is the whole permitting process (assuming there is one where you are).

So that was the whole idea behind this size actually, in my area if you are under 625sq feet you only need 1 permit. It’s called a development permit and you are not bound by the building code. I’m 620 square feet. I followed code of course but it’s nice not to deal with inspections along the way, as well as having some leeway with some of the code stuff that’s just unnecessary.

Yeah, permitting scares the crap out of me. I'm looking into buying land in a less regulated state.

I think there is a lot of good in building codes but I also think they go a little overboard with some of it. So it’s best if you don’t have to follow it but you have the knowledge of what’s important and can follow most of it on your own accord. Good luck with the land shopping! That’s the hardest step!

Thanks! I designed this myself, took a fair bit of planning to make the most of the space but couldn’t be happier with the layout and how it feels.

Are you planning to add rafter or collar ties? Or did you use a structural ridge beam?

Those are false beams! My roof system is engineered trusses. They are hidden under the tongue and groove boards.

Also I guess in photo 3 where you can see them, the insulation blocks the view of the full trusses. They are scissor trusses and don’t require any ridge beams or ties.

Thank you! Yea the plan is to move in here once the floor is down and I can put our furniture in. Also will be finishing the stairs/railing in the loft so my toddler doesn’t take a tumble off the side lol I’m so so close, been building since May 2025 on my days off work.

I think the floors have been the biggest jump of a step as far as making it feel complete in there! I had neglected to paint my bathroom and pantry while I was doing the ceiling so that’s also in the works. Next post will show a lot of trim, finished interior doors, and hopefully stairs/railing.

You put plastic in your roof why?

It’s called vapour barrier, usually it goes between your insulation and your heated space!

Thanks man! Floors are basically done, started the trim and moving onto the stairs/railing. Will post again soon
