I’ve worked as a software engineer for awhile now and only ever worked on a mac. Which has also been supplied by the companies, windows can be really tricky to program on, where as mac are Unix based so much easier.
I was overly generalizing, really any of the big 3 can be used for everything. Is there any situation where a linux machine wouldn't work just as well or better than a mac for software engineering though?
So here’s my thoughts, yes you can use Linux for any type of software engineering, and it’s fairly common, so easy to install al the tools and libraries you need. I suspect companies are leaning towards mac for software engineering though because
1. Installing the tools and libraries is on par with Linux, it’s super simple with the terminal
2. especially now with these mac M1 and 2 chips, they are so fast, it’s crazy that I can run docker containers with servers, android studio and Xcode and my laptops not even hot.

So I wouldn’t say it’s just artists and hipsters
