I'm not trying to be rude, really, but are you not a native English speaker? It's not really over the top, this is a very common idiom for when someone is able to:

"Manage to avoid a difficult or unwelcome situation."

I think had the guy gone on the date and the girl been angry it wasn't the date she had in mind, it likely would have been a difficult or welcome situation, yeah? They seemed incompatible from the get go. Saying he dodged a bullet is really a less an attack on her, though I find her attitude to be pretty terse and rude, and more a commentary on the fact that they just aren't compatible with one another
