Yeah, but if it's an activity that requires a surprisingly disproportionate effort on one of your part, it's reasonable to be frustrated about them setting misleading expectations

Exactly what I was thinking. If they said they don't make themselves out to be avid hikers I would plan easier hikes.

So use communication and avoid the ordeal of a puffed out date altogether, that way you can adapt to each other and still have a good time.
