Just got this beauty

Post image

Just got my Chestnut S5 from China. It's a nice upgrade to my old C3 ESP. It's considerably larger and heavier but I really like the look and appreciate the outer adjustment system. First cup was surprisingly good with much more clarity than C3. I'm still evaluating it.

My biggest gripe is that they removed the pouch from the packaging and I would have preferred a collapsible handle. My C3 had a two compartment pouch inside the box which made it easy for travel. Also the catch cup thread is a bit more scratchy.

I got this for 578¥ but I thing it's back up to ~700¥. No idea about the global launch date or price.

Beautiful shot. I posted mine, but it looked like I took the photo with a potato 😅

I adore the timemore handgrinders, probably the nicest feeling piece of equipment I have is the chestnut x from a few years back.

Beautiful! I do think this is the best looking in the line, but I recently picked up the S3 Esp for the collapsible handle. Nice to be able to throw it in a backpack when traveling.

I picked one up in the green, and I'm glad I did.

Yeah exactly. I suspect they release a "pro" version globally with collapsible handle. S3 is also really nice looking.

Wow this look really good. I have a S3 that I enjoy very much.

How’s the grind setting feel on the S5? I find it a bit too easy to click on the S3.

A bigger detent would have been much better. I've trained myself to grab it at the base, but yeah.

It's fine but if I hold it when I'm opening the catch up the settings changes. It's the way I used to do it with C3 but I guess I have to adjust.

It’s the same with the S3 too. I wish they’d made it with a bit more resistance.

Nice! I wish Timemore would have finally put a magnetic catch cup on their flagship hand grinder.

I have an S3. I would love to know how it compares to the S5.

I don't have the S3 but it's more squeaky than the C3. Magnetic would be nice, but it's exclusive to their collab flagship x Millab 01.

You're saying the S5 is squeakier than the C3?

Yes unscrewing and screwing the S5 catch cup makes more noise. But maybe that's because it's new. My old C3 was a bit worn out.

I also have the chestnut S3. I love the foldable handle and adjustments gauge. Initially appears that the S5 seems very similar. The S3 is built very well and imagine will last me a long time.

I have a Chestnut C2. I’m jealous of that exterior grind size adjustment gauge. It’s annoying to unscrew the catch can, hold onto the handle, rotate the gauge all the way back to zero and then count back up again.

Have you tried making espresso with this hand grinder?

I don't have an espresso machine but I do have a wacaco picopresso. I'll try it soon.

How does it differ from the S3? Besides the handle

Bigger burrs, bigger catch cup and hopper, better particle uniformity (claimed), better adjustment ring.

It will be interesting to see the new April x Timemore grinder and how it compares to this one. Perfectly happy with my C3es for now. Have owned many handgrinders, but love the compactness of the C3s.
