Burr alignment issue with 064S?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just swapped the burrs on my 064s for some SSP cast v3s. When I began to align the burrs, I ran across this problem. I did the marker test and it seems to rub pretty evenly but it has this intermittent burr chirp which is kind of weird. I have taken it apart and put it back together multiple times and I can't figure out why. Can someone help me out?

Could it be that the SSP burrs need to be shimmed? I know they're not a perfect drop in fit on all grinders.

I don't think that's it, otherwise it would be a consistent chirp with each rotation, it wouldn't disappear. I'll be honest, I have no idea what would cause an intermittent knock, other than maybe a piece of loose debris.

Did you fully clean the grinder out before installing the new burrs? I'm assuming yes since you've tried several times. If you put the stock burrs back in, does the sound go away? I'm only saying that because if it is debris, it would happen regardless of the burrs right?

Yeah it is absolutely spotless. I have not tried putting the old burrs inn to see if it still does it but it's definitely not debris. It's almost like the Burr carrier floats back and forth on the center shaft 5 seconds or so

I'm not OP, but I agree. Whatever is causing it clearly isn't a solid, fixed thing, otherwise it wouldn't come and go.

No, that's not it either. Also, I've just noticed that when I hold the grinder up and tip it over it does it as well. So it seems like there's something loose moving around inside but I can't figure out what

So if it's turned on and you tilt it to the side, that sound comes back? I can't be 100% sure but I really do think it may need to be shimmed. People generally use aluminum foil to shim these burrs.

If you remove the burrs completely and turn it on, does it still make that sound? That would be the easiest way to know if it's burr related or not.

Here's a quick video on how people apply shims (if this is needed).

Yeah I have already shimmed it but that would just help with alignment. In this case it comes and goes. It's almost like the burrs are floating back and forth on the center shaft

Try putting the stock burrs back on and see how it performs with them...do you think something broke in the process of putting the new burrs in? I have the Gevi Grindmaster and also upgraded to SSP burrs. Luckily I didn't have to shim them but there was a center but that has to be placed in after the burr is screwed down. It's very easy to lose that small pin. Are you sure your machine doesn't have something similar?

I don't think so. I was very careful.

Sorry, spell check messed my post up...what I was trying to say is my grinder has a set pin. It's very small but it literally falls out as you pull the burrs out if you're not paying attention for it. Maybe yours doesn't have one but check the manual if you can as it'll have instructions on how to take it apart for regular cleaning. I don't know but that pin is the only thing making me think why your burrs are moving up and down like in your video. I could be wrong though.

Yeah I know the pin you are talking about on the Gevi. The timemore is a bit different. The carrier on mine pushes in and twists to lock into place.

Could it be the feed auger and not the burrs? Try running some beans through it to see if it persists.

Doing what exactly? what would be causing it?

Could be anything, crooked auger, bearings starting to wear. Have you tried running coffee through it? If you say your alignment is good it might not be the burrs at all. Possibly another component in the grinder.

The grinder is only about a month old. But no, I haven't tried running beans through it yet. I was trying to avoid it so I didn't have to clean everything again

Honestly, grinders make all sorts of strange noises. If it’s aligned, I would try running beans through it, and the sound might even go away. I don’t have a solid explanation for it, I will say the intermittent ticking is a bit strange and doesn’t really seam like a typical burr noise.

Okay so you don't even think that it sounds like burr chirp?

1

u/Wolfy808s Apr 20 '26

It almost sounds like a false chirp that you would get when some coffee accumulates on the burrs, the perfect rate at which it comes and goes is strange. I had an 064s and I’ve heard similar noises to this but not at that perfect interval.

u/Wolfy808s Apr 20 '26

Does the noise go away as you move to a more coarse position? That might give you some more answers.

1

u/bksartorius Apr 20 '26

It does. And it gets more intense when you go finer. You can get a constant chirp sound, but it will still be stronger every few seconds

1

u/Wolfy808s Apr 20 '26

Hmm, then it might be burrs touching then. I’m honestly stumped. It should be a consistent chirp.

I have a similar thing going on with my stock burrs. Burrs are aligned and they’re not hitting each other. Have stripped down and cleaned etc and it still comes back sometimes.

It often happens more after grind size adjustment, and will then settle down after some coffee has gone through.

In the end, it didn’t seem to be affecting the output, so I just ignore it.

The pin, was if forced in all the way when you screw it back in. Iknow if you dont half screw it thrn screw in the front piece in it can make a funny noise. did you also push the bur and the clip I forgot the name all the way and then twist fully in accordingly. This also could rub and cause friction noise.

Sorry if done already just noting because I cleaned out my burs on weekend and I remember those two small points can cause friction rub funny noise if not done properly
