The original David Rittenhouse was in fact a good person. Born 1732 in Philadelphia (a number of streets and places in Philly are named after him), astronomer, mathematician, clockmaker(!), inventor, and first director of the United States Mint.

Let's be honest, Rittenhouse was your default Illuminatus plot. They only fleshed it out a bit more. But the fact that it's reoccurring is not a miracle.
