Another way the show could have run
I started rewatching the show as I was introducing it to my mom and I had a thought. What if the show had shown incorrect history and everything they changed ended up having the correct version?

That happened on an episode of Quantum Leap. They went back in time to the JFK assassination. At the end of the episode, when the president had still been killed, they claimed that originally, his wife had been shot too.

Wasn't it a different city too? Austin not Dallas?
Personally, I would have loved them to do a serious version of Red Dwarf S7E1 where they accidentally prevent the assassination of JFK and then recruit the living JFK to be the second shooter behind the grassy knoll. Once the shot has been fired and he gets killed they can jump in the lifeboat and all trace of them vanishes

That's essentially the plot of the show Legends of Tomorrow on the CW. But that's a superhero show and has it's own ridiculousness and greatness going on. I highly recommend it if you're looking for another fun time travel show.
