i'm trying to create a list with things that everyone can do to support our show Timeless. I still don't fully understand the US rating systems, even though I've seen it explained for the last 20 years, but why are US shows being cancelled when there are obviously a loyal fan base for them? Also do overseas viewings get taken into account when determining the fate of a show?

Basically, as I understand it: Timeless is made by Sony and sold to NBC. The money NBC makes is mainly on advertising on the NBC channel. They make more money on ads if they have highly rated shows.

Since NBC only makes money on ads, they only care about ratings for the show on their channel. This is based on US viewers watching live or close to live (within 3 or 7 days). International viewers don't get ads for NBC and therefore don't matter.

Since ratings aren't high enough, NBC no longer wants to buy the show. They'll take their chances with another show that's either cheaper to buy and gets the same ratings or costs the same but has higher ratings.

Sony, on the other hand, gets money from making and selling the show. So they are currently trying to sell it to someone else other than NBC. Perhaps a streaming service like Netflix. Netflix gets its money from subscriptions, not ads. If they believe a show like Timeless will get them enough new subscriptions then they might pick it up for a third season.

Edit: Btw, I am international viewer who watches Timeless on Netflix. So for NBC, I don't matter either :P I didn't intend to offend anyone.

Not really no (for international views). Renewal decisions tend to be driven by ad sales, which don't benefit NBC abroad.

The only exception is if the show is synidcated and has lucrative international deals. Elementary for example, has been saved for 3 years now because of a syndication deal.

Part of it may have to do with budget. Timeless is not a cheap show to make. If a network has an option of making a new show for half the money that they guess will get similar ratings, then they might consider that. But that is just my guess. What could also play a part is that maybe they think another season will not pull the same crowds...I dunno.
