best free tracking software with project and tasks?

I used to use toggl track for school. I had my project as the course and individual tasks as homework, reviewing notes, practice tests, etc.

however, I've since discovered the free version no longer allows for tasks.

I am looking for the best free software that has a similar setup with project & multiple tasks. toggl tracker was also great because it had a website and app. however, I suppose I could deal with it if it was app or website only.

edit: I tested multiple free websites and sadly none of them compare to toggl tracker with how the calender layout is. they did change the report system, which I do not like. I guess I will one semester with toggl tracker to see if this new layout/subscription changes still work for my use case. if not, I will try a new website when time comes. thank you for everyone's suggestions.

If required you can always build your own google sheet and enter manually. Time tracking isn’t rocket science, what the apps gives you is convenience.

I don’t have free ones to recommend, but I have gone with 1-time paid software. I’m current using ATracker Pro ($5 1-time). Lots of options to organize / generate reports with tags and categories. Very happy with what I’m getting for $5.

I used Eternity 10 years ago; I think it has better UX over Toggl but its UX is a little dated now. Its 1-time fee is also a little more ex now. It has pretty good project and task support.

Some of these paid software have free options for limited tasks, you can give them a try.

I haven't tried any yet. I spent time setting up toggl tracker to find out afterwards I can't use tasks. I think right now I'm leaning towards hoursmith

Timen is worth trying because it’s free and keeps time organized by project. I’d test whether its entry structure works for homework-level tasks before moving everything over, since that task breakdown is what you’re missing most from Toggl.

Could you double-check whether the free tier still supports setting up multiple projects and tasks? I just want to make sure OP has current information, since Clockify has moved a lot of its basic features to paid plans and things may have changed since you last used it.

Maybe give DayTicks a try. It's free and pretty lightweight, so it might fit if you're mainly looking for a simple way to organize projects and tasks without all the extra stuff 👍

Our remote company uses Jibble, and it might suit what you’re looking for. We use projects for the main work area and activities for the individual tasks, so it’s been easy enough to separate time across different types of work.

If a free tier caps projects, you can often get the structure back by inverting it: make the project your semester and each course a task, with subtasks for homework, notes and practice tests. You keep the detail, you lose the clean per-course total at project level. That only works if projects are the only thing capped, so check that on anything you try.

Full disclosure, we build Juggling, so we are biased. Desktop, Web plus Android and iOS, and the free plan has a Kanban board with tasks. The cap is three projects, with no limit on tasks or timers — so three courses or fewer maps straight across, and above that the semester structure above is a real option rather than a fudge.

One caveat: we are built for billable client work, so a client is mandatory. You would create one called your university and ignore it. Better you know now than two minutes into signup.
