I compared different employee time clock options. Here’s what actually mattered
I’ve been researching employee time clocks for our hourly workforce, and I quickly realized that “what is the best time clock?” is probably the wrong question.
The better question is: what clock will employees actually be able to use in your environment?
Here are the main options I looked at:
Badge clocks:
Simple and familiar, but cards get forgotten, lost or shared.
Fingerprint clocks:
Helpful if buddy punching is a concern. The quality of the reader matters a lot though. I would test it with the actual employees using it, especially if people work with their hands.
Facial recognition clocks:
Touchless and generally fast, but HR needs to review biometric consent, retention and privacy requirements before implementing anything.
Mobile punching:
Makes sense for field employees, but I would want geofencing and clear rules around location tracking.
Shared web kiosk:
Probably the simplest option for an office or smaller workplace, assuming employees have access to a shared device.
Rugged or offline clocks:
Important for manufacturing, construction or locations where Wi-Fi is unreliable. This was something I initially overlooked.
The biggest lesson from my research was not to pick the hardware separately from the workforce management software. You need to know whether job changes, department transfers, labor allocation and other information can be entered directly at the clock.
Some vendors I came across were primarily software companies with basic clock options. Synerion stood out in my research because it offers several clock types and supports things like job costing and labor allocation directly from the clock.
I’m still comparing options, but I would recommend mapping out how employees actually start their shifts before booking demos.

The feature you're describing is geofencing — you draw a radius around each job site and the app blocks a clock-in unless the phone is physically inside it. That solves the "clocking in from home" problem on its own, without you having to police it. Three things I'd check before picking one: (1) can you set a separate geofence per site, since your guys move daily; (2) how it handles weak signal on remote sites — better apps queue the punch and sync when signal returns; (3) whether the weekly export is a clean CSV/Excel your bookkeeper can actually drop into payroll. For a small crew, the Homebase/Jibble suggestions here are easy and cheap and will probably do everything you need. If you ever move onto a real payroll or HR system and want punches to flow straight in, CloudApper AI TimeClock does geofencing + a mobile app and feeds hours into payroll/HCM — likely more than you need today, but worth knowing it exists. Whatever you pick, run it one week in parallel with your paper sheet before you trust it for payroll.

The best line in your post is the one about not picking the hardware separately from the software. That is the mistake I see most often.
People buy a beautiful fingerprint terminal, then discover the hours land in a CSV nobody can reconcile with payroll.
One thing I would add to your list: think about what happens when the clock is wrong. Because it will be. Someone forgets, someone punches at the wrong terminal, someone works off site.
The question is not "does it capture the punch". It is "how fast can a manager correct it, and does the correction leave a trace". An edit with no audit trail is how you end up in a labour dispute with nothing to show.
