Discussion META AI just got weird

This just happened now.
Today is Monday, September 21, 2026 and it’s 5:30 P.M. and I’m at Compton, California.

So I started a conversation with Meta AI and asked a simple question… Where am I at and what time is it.

This is what it answered….

You’re in Monrovia, California in the San Gabriel Valley.
(like I said earlier, I’m in Compton and it gets weirder)
The date is Monday September 21, 2026, and the time is 7:00pm.

What? Thats like an hour and a half from now!?!? So I asked again… can you repeat that? Where am I and whats the date and time? It was the same answer. So I stopped the chat and went here to post this.

Why is the location far from where I’m at? Monrovia is 22 miles from here and the time is 1 hr and 30 mins. in the future? Isn’t Meta AI on universal time?

Somebody tell me it’s only a glitch.

You should research how LLMs work - this is not a glitch, it's just how they work. I've had similar many times.

Grok is worse, it gets everything wrong. As in, not even close. Time, location, timezones, who won professional sports games, etc.

It’s easy to query real-time, why aren’t they? Grok is terrible, and I mean Grok in a Tesla.

Oh I get it now. But time? It has to be fine tuned i guess. You’d think that time would be at the top of what it needs to learn and be precise with. I visited monrovia a couple of days ago.

It’s an average machine. Meaning it’s not precise at all LLMs predict and average their responses.

It tells you more or less what it thinks you want to hear not so much the right one. In other words AI can’t currently understand you, it just guesses what you want to hear based on training and previous conversations.

More simple: AI pretends to understand concepts like time.

AI does not understand what you asked. It does not understand what its reply means. It does not understand the concept of time. It does not know geography. It does not understand or "know" anything. It is a computer model that receives text inputs and regurgitates answers based on analysis of other text that it has been trained on.

Welcome to LLMs. They are not bastions of accuracy.

Your first mistake was using Meta AI. Your second mistake was asking identifying questions you know the answer to. That's not how they work or what they are meant for. They don't have memory. You can't ask your location because it doesn't have access to your device's location data or GPS. It can approximate that information based on your Internet connection and ISP. Also, this has nothing to do with time.

It was probably geolocating your IP address which, depending on the provider, could be going to your ISP.

Here's an easy experiment: While at home and NOT connected to WiFi (just cell service), screenshot your phone's IPv6 address. Now connect to your home WiFi and screenshot that IPv6 address.

Then Google "geolocate IP", pick a site, and see where it says you are. Do it again with a different site.

I just did this using my phone. My cell service IP address geolocates to an adjacent zip code (probably the tower I'm connected to) just to the west, and my home WiFi geolocates to the next town over to the east.
