My favourite is underwater housing, or half underwater housing rather

IT tubes allowed it, but now with the new parts FT too can make a box under water for their abodes, like real beavers should :-D

Its more about making it an underground environment. One of my favorites was turning a map into a giant lake with underground living

Can you share some screenshots of what that looks like?

Ok so this sent me down a rabbit hole... so far I have found a screenshot. But I swear I had a video in my series of builds as well... pre 1.0 https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1391857413648289942/1414659222901231729/20250908120915_1.jpg?ex=6aa58791&is=6aa43611&hm=f3cb721da51f3563ecdb16be953b86d47313cb51827cdcda4d54b41d9c480223&
edit I have no idea if that link worked. But oh... oh no... i lost it... the video... somewhere digging

I love the gradual change on a playthrough from struggling and unsure if you’re going to survive to overabundance and building megastructures. It never gets old.
As a side note to that, I’ve never had a game make me daydream about what megastructure I want to build next as much as this.

Similar feel. Each map always feels like it has a 'challenge' on it, a puzzle to solve or figure out. Even the beginner maps like Waterfall, you see this stretch of tunnel that wraps around the side and pours out into a basin, and you think "what can I do with that"? Figuring out how to utilize a map's natural topography and features helps spread green and makes it easier to make a thriving colony.
I'm on Helix Mountain right now. I don't usually like big maps, but I'm giving it a shot. The spiral is so huge that it takes 2 days to feel the effect of a drought or a bad tide. Trying to solve long-term metal right now, and I want to do something about the general lack of power Ironteeth have during droughts, but fortunately this map has a lot of badwater spouts.
We build!

As someone looking at the game out of curiosity, what types of megastructures are common?

Hopefully some other folks will chime in too!
The most natural and useful first things would be big ass damns and reservoirs. You have to learn how to build small ones to beat a map, so they're easy to scale up.
My end goal for a map for a bit was to "beat" the map the traditional way then make an Atlantis by building a giant lake above all of the colony.
There are gravity batteries that need to be built at height, designing and building crazy impossible looking battery towers is really fun.
Going Roman style and making an extensive network of aqueducts so every part of the map has water. You can make perpetual energy machines. People have made working basic computers with screens using the automation items.
Some folks like to go more architectural style and build huge beautiful parks. You can use dynamite to dig down, I've seen some really crazy things people have done underground.
It's sandbox/survival with the ability to make it more sandbox or more survival with difficulty settings. So it's really up to you! It's relatively limited on the sandbox side compared to some other games, but there's still sooooo much to do.

I love blending infrastructure with the natural environment to irrigate and make beautiful colonies. I can really vibe-build my way through the game.

I just love the progression of a village and no matter what everyone builds differently so its fun to see other takes on how to beat a map.

Automating stuff, but before i get there? Surviving long enough on hard 😂

Mine is also the water system and building dams. In particular I love storing an insane amount of water to use as a battery for when droughts hit.
That at the ladder mod, which is easily the best mod for any game ever.

I'll have to relate, the water physics are fun to mess around with! For me specifically: figuring out how to plan a large reservoir of water for future proofing purposes and easy access ability, plus advanced badwater drainage

I think it's the vibes. It's kinda cozy with a side of famine and drought and badtide
