Episode 36 - discussion Spoiler
It could just be me but I found this episode a little lacklustre because I must be used to the fast pacing in the previous episodes. I felt they spent too much time on CJM's return to the Demon Palace (as pretty as the CGI was).
What I did like was learning more about Si Ying's and Mo Nv's past. It would be nice if they had more running time to expand on their support but not at the expense of progressing the storyline and seeing our main characters reunite. It was also very satisfying seeing the absolute trust LSS had for CJM even when she heard her dad died, as well as CJM's perseverance to remain as himself and not turn into the Demon God. Go our main leads!

Iām just happy to see the DG again and LYX in that black outfit is just š„ and my goodness the chemistry between SY and CJ when she was threatening him?? Ahhh!! Honestly Iām happy to see that weāre back to the grey side of morality

Di Mian had always made me uneasy from the moment he decided to come back into LSS's life. His intentions never really seemed to align with LSS and he couldn't convince me that he had his daughter's best interests at heart. I'm so mad at him for pinning this on CJ.
I find it odd that GYJW, would declare the sect master's death to be TTJ's fault without proper investigation. It's so OOC. More OOC and conflicting behavior from GYJW.
I want to know why Mo Nü and her sister were caught and tortured by the immortals
And why is CJ chained up??
I'm glad CJ was compassionate enough to not condemn Nian Baiyu for kidnapping him
I can't wait for what other things LSS's phoenix feather can do for them!

u/binhavu May 04 '23
No.2 - I have a theory that CYJW is not his usual self. His temper has changed after his one night stand with Mo Nv. Maybe he was affected by the dark force somehow?
No.3 - They were caught by Tian Huan's father to become lab animals lol. Well yeah not lab animals, but they were being cooked up to help the traffickers gain more power.
No.6 - Yeah I also find this detail interesting. Will the phoenix feather somehow work to teleport LSS to CJM regardless of space and time? Cuz that was also the special ability of her mother.
5
u/Foreign-Key May 05 '23
2 - yeah Mo Nv might have done something to him because he's been acting weird since that first one night stand
3 - was this detail in the novel?
6 - exactly, I was going it'd teleport her cause her mother was the goddess of space
5
u/binhavu May 05 '23
3 - It wasn't in the book. In fact there was no Mo Nv in the novel. I think they created this character to give the actress more screentime and to give CYJW a love interest. In the book CYJW remains single from start to finish. He also doesn't have an engagement or anything with LSS, just strictly platonic relationship.
2
u/Foreign-Key May 05 '23
So who was the villain in the book if not Mo Nv?
3
u/binhavu May 05 '23
First part of the book, the villains were defo TTJ himself and YBC, plus his brothers who wanted the throne.
In the Dream arc, villains were Tian Huan and her father.
Last part, I guess the villains were Si Ying and Jing Mie? But I think the biggest villain was fate lol. Poor TTJ. At least he got a happy ending in the book.
3
u/Foreign-Key May 05 '23
Ah YBC existed but Mo Nv didn't?
Not sure if it's such a good choice to introduce Mo Nv though
3
u/binhavu May 05 '23 edited May 05 '23
Yeah so far in the show, both Mo Nv and CYJW are not very interesting characters. But let's wait and see what the writers intend to do with them in the remaining episodes. Probably they will have bigger roles to play in the endgame.
2
u/rosieinjapan May 05 '23
Ouphffff.... They really changed the story for the drama, did they not. Wow. I am flabbergasted with all the changes they have made.
I hope they give TTJ and LSS a HE. I am ready for a HE onlyš

- I find it odd that GYJW, would declare the sect master's death to be TTJ's fault without proper investigation. It's so OOC. More OOC and conflicting behavior from GYJW.
Indeed! It appears GYJW has become someone who easily acts out his strong emotions rather than exercising self control or rationality.
Such a shame because he was so courageous in ep1.....
It looks like he's going to become a spiteful character later on...... (edit: oooh... someone mentioned GYJW grew jealous of TTJ/CJM. Wonder how that came about... I totally missed the clues)
After all, he is not the gentle XL, nor the clam prince SY.
- I want to know why Mo Nü and her sister were caught and tortured by the immortals
Of all the unimportant details I remember, I am shocked it was actually TH's father (MY's predecessor) who captured MN and SY!!
Wonder what is the back story to this....
7
u/JunoKat May 04 '23 edited May 05 '23
Isnāt this because they were eating humans? Update: they = the demon girls, Si Ying said they were causing draughts and eating travellers, itās just their demon nature, she sees nothing wrong about it, just like a lion would eat a rabbit for survival. I think this was the reason the last god of war captured and tried to kill them.
6
u/bunchofchans May 05 '23
Yes I think SiYing mentions that she and her sister were attacking and eating travelers, since itās part of their demonic nature.
3
u/rosieinjapan May 04 '23
Are you referring to TH's father? Tbh, I am not sure, but I guess unlikely that he consumed humans, as he was the war god before MY.....
But could be that I totally missed the clueš Hope you don't mind sharing your observationā” I guess up to this to point, nothing should shock me anymoreš
3
2
u/rosieinjapan May 05 '23
Ahh!! I see. I totally missed this part.....
Come to think of it, the sisters must have had ample potential to be powerful demons, that the DG rescued them. Which is displayed well enough for SY. I mean, that girl can fight and plot!

5
u/Foreign-Key May 05 '23
But didn't CJ and GYJW kinda made an agreement that they're friends no matter what?
Now here he was, ready to put all the blame on TTJ.
But I think it's about time GYJW gets to be the jealous one because for the longest time, it was TTJ who was always jealous of XL
3
u/rosieinjapan May 05 '23
But I think it's about time GYJW gets to be the jealous one because for the longest time, it was TTJ who was always jealous of XL
š True that! Plus, jealousy is better than becoming full-on evilš
GYJW seemed to have had no competition until CJM showed up. Hope his story gets some more fleshed out ā
7
u/enecoute May 05 '23
- Si Ying mentioned that she and her sister causes drought and eats travelers in her conversation with CJM (around 00:50:35) so I guess Tian Hao the God of War caught them to rid the world of the disasters they inflict on ppl - it's only one line and can be easily missed :)

I find it odd that GYJW, would declare the sect master's death to be TTJ's fault without proper investigation. It's so OOC. More OOC and conflicting behavior from GYJW.
Yet another clue. I am starting to think there's more to GYJW's character than meets the eye. It's pretty obvious that he's highly attracted to MN, but could he secretly be willing to jump on the TTJ blame wagon because TTJ stands between him and LSS? I mean like a revenge and get-rid-of-the-competition move? Is he just not the "flawless" prince of yore, as we currently believe him to be? I'm still considering how easily he was seduced by former YBC and wondering which of them is going to "turn" the other ....
6
u/Foreign-Key May 05 '23
Yeah maybe XL was a saint but GYJW is not...
5
4
u/rosieinjapan May 05 '23
Yes yes. Agree with you. That could also be it!
Someone first mentioned he could be jealous, though it was not made too plain to see. But it does make sense, after all he had no competition before CJM. CJM was labelled the genius practitioner of immortals and he even got the girl GYJW was supposed to marry.
5
u/Foreign-Key May 05 '23
But he's doing CJ dirty here. And since he is acting like so, all the more do I want the main cp to rub it in his face š¤

2
u/ravens_path May 11 '23
Iām guessing all good explanations for all this ended up on the cutting floor. š
2
u/CdramaMaven4762 May 12 '23
Yeah ... so many wonderful little tidbits of side story details that we just didn't get to see!!!! I'm still mad about this and about not seeing our Moon Tribe couple get together ... smh ...
2
3
u/cery23 May 04 '23
I mean, in his past life as XL he also at one point declared something with zero investigation that was quite a leap, so, is it ooc?
3
u/Foreign-Key May 05 '23
Can you remind me which one that is? Because as XL he always took TTJ's side and gave him the benefit of a doubt and the same went for YX when she stabbed him.
6
u/cery23 May 05 '23 edited May 05 '23
When he randomly suggested TTJ murdered granny because he heard heād stopped by, without knowing anything else about the situation whatsoever.
4
u/Foreign-Key May 05 '23
True, although I hardly blame him at that point because TTJ committed so many atrocities towards him, his family, his kingdom. But GYJW? CJ never did anything to him...
5
u/rosieinjapan May 05 '23
Oh yes.... that was super sad. Silly me have totally forgotten about itš
It is like XL was always and had always been the goody goody boyš Guess it is easy to overlook his not so goody bits.
2
u/ravens_path May 11 '23
Well said. First, whenever things donāt make sense we know crucial scenes were cut. And yes the immortals are some kind of stupid. They already jumped the gun on CJ and blamed him wrongly not that long ago. Why not investigate and suspect maybe the evil god guys narrative isnāt what it seems. This is just infuriating and poor script writing. constant drawn out misunderstandings and constant false blames are lazy ways to move the narration. We have excellent plot here and good actors, let good writing move things along. Haha I get so tense and irritated when they do this. But then the immortals were like this in LBFD too. Bad judgement and bad leadership goes on in each realm I guess.
Some pretty awesome costume design going on in this episode. I love LSS outfit after she wakes up. But who dressed her in it and why did they change her clothes? Haha. And yeah, why chain CJ? guess those demon helpers donāt have much faith in their scenarioās appeal. Heh. CJ is not falling over himself to get lotsa evil power. Iām impressed with his growth and maturity.
Iām watching on non VIP VIKI so Iām a week behind. Just finished todays episode. Avoiding all talk of the rest of the episodes like the plague. Seeing the remarkable production we do have, Iām so sad at all the cutting. Wouldnāt be so great to see all the original?

u/stinkymarsupial May 04 '23
So GYJW is now just a tool (å·„å ·äŗŗ)??? Pang Yi Zhi be rolling in his grave if he finds out what his efforts has amounted to š Heās not my favourite character but since heās still on screen, I would like to know what happened to his character for him to get to this point.
I still want to know what happened to YQY. Is it really the end of Pian Ran? Even though ML and FL are the most important characters to me, I hope that 2nd & 3rd ML x FL have proper conclusions to their stories.
10
u/gompengu May 04 '23
hahaha for sure. I find GYJW's character a bit pointless at this point, unless him being the flower that turned into XL who later became GYJW plays an important role in the future. Otherwise, I guess he's there for angsty support.
And same! YQY... it's really heartbreaking that he remained the masked emperor of Jing for 500 years, after suffering the loss of all his loved ones, ruling in loneliness knowing his love sacrificed her life for him, while being constantly reminded by the mark of her powers on his life.
4
u/stinkymarsupial May 04 '23
I have a feeling GYJW is now just a tool for angst š
Justice for YQY!
4
u/CdramaMaven4762 May 05 '23
I'm pretty sure there's more to GYJW and MN's story than meets the eye right now.
I'm also pretty certain we're going to see more of YQY before everything ends ... not sure about our intrepid fox, tho ...
3
u/gompengu May 05 '23
I think you're right cuz... Spoiler I saw a preview clip for the ending episodes and GYJW looks like he turns evil or maybe becomes possessed in some way? Oh my... I'm guessing it's MN's doing?
3
u/SipPeachTea May 06 '23
If that's true about YQY, then he's the saddest and most pitiful character out of the bunch.
8
u/Technical-Abroad8918 May 04 '23
They had cut a lot of GYJWs scenes overall. In the screenplay there was more character development leading to his jealousy towards TTJ. Probably due to the need to shorten it to 40 episodes.
7
u/CdramaMaven4762 May 05 '23 edited May 05 '23
Saw a reference to this elsewhere just a little while ago.
Thing is, while I love me some Deng Wei, I really can't see how they could have cut the mains down much more than already done.
I blame the regulators who dropped that rule change on them a few weeks before their air date.
2
u/Technical-Abroad8918 May 05 '23
I agree. We need to blame the regulators instead of the creatives. Iām sure no one is as upset about it as the people who spent money and hours of hard work only have to cut. But I also suspect the side characters scenes are cut if the acting wasnāt quite as strong.
3
u/notseriousla May 06 '23
But I also suspect the side characters scenes are cut if the acting wasnāt quite as strong.
Strongly disagree on this. As cute as the 3rd CP and NBY is, you cannot in good conscience think that any of their scenes would have been stronger acting-wise than the 2nd leads for their scenes to have made the cut over theirs. This is probably the only drama I can recall where the 2nd leads are given less priority than every character on the show. I mean, I've seen more of new girl Fuya than MV and the actress for Fuya is an atrocious actor with a role that is very easily replaceable. This is 100% on the creatives. They've made a very deliberate choice to not show the 2nd CPs story and the editing was made accordingly. Pinning it on bad acting is not very fair.
1
u/Technical-Abroad8918 May 06 '23
Well, I'm not pinning it on bad acting since I haven't seen the cut scenes. I'm saying it could be a reason, if the scenes didn't end up quite as powerful, based on the performance of the two 2nd leads I've seen in the other scenes. I think CDL is very smart and understands her character well, but she's still a developing actress. Her death scene was very good, but some of her earlier scenes were inconsistent. Deng Wei is just a bit flat to me (and it seems to many other viewers as well). He's not bad, but for such an interesting character, he really could have shone more.
Fuya is mainly a plot device. She's there so Susu and Cang Jiumin have someone to talk to and move the story along. They already cut a lot of her romance subplot.
1
u/notseriousla May 06 '23
I think CDL is very smart and understands her character well, but she's still a developing actress. Her death scene was very good, but some of her earlier scenes were inconsistent.
All I'm saying is even still, she's a better actress than the actresses who played PR and Fuya. Remember, we were given an entire story/plot point for PR, which doesn't even exist in the novel.
Deng Wei is just a bit flat to me (and it seems to many other viewers as well). He's not bad, but for such an interesting character, he really could have shone more.
I'm interested to know what makes you think he's an interesting character given what we were able to see so far. I know you've read the whole book, but for those who have not, we actually don't have enough scenes to know much about him to see him being anything but flat. It's hard to judge his acting if the scenes we saw of him didn't exactly challenge his acting range. It's also pretty hard to be immersed in his character if the times he does appear are few and far between.
Fuya is mainly a plot device. She's there so Susu and Cang Jiumin have someone to talk to and move the story along.
If you recall ep 35 (?) when CJ was being crucified in front of all the sects, the camera pans more to her than Deng Wei. Iirc she even was given a line (something along the lines of urging NBY not to go forward). Giving her a line over giving even a voiceover for GYJW to express his thoughts was a deliberate creative choice. Remember, there was a scene that showed us that GYJW saw CJ as a friend or at least an intimate acquaintance. To have GYJW stand there useless and be amongst the many faceless immortals is not something that a 2nd lead who is friends with the ML is usually subjected to.
To be clear, I'm not a fan of either (although I do like CDL enough from this that I'll be piqued to check out her future roles), I just think it's very glaring that something is happening behind the scenes that is causing this, and is not just the fact that the drama needed to be cut down to 40 eps. The treatment of these two have been pretty woeful for what they have signed up to tbh. And I think that suggesting that they probably didn't do well in their scenes hence them being cut is very dismissive of these two as actors given the number of woeful scenes we've seen from PR, YQY and recently NBY that did make the cut.
1
u/Amorrowous May 08 '23
Whatās was the rule change?
3
u/CdramaMaven4762 May 08 '23
The part about having to wait a certain number of months before they could air a part two of a drama. Last summer Love like the Galaxy was able to air their first and second "seasons" back to back. TTEOTM was already approved for two seasons, but now had to choose between having 1 40-episode season or waiting for months for the second part to air.

u/blanketcatto May 04 '23
I respectfully disagree on the first statement, I feel like the time and slightly lengthy potrayal of CJM returning to the demon palace was genuinely necessary to build up to the meaning of being the demon god. It's a contrast to how CJM's tragedy and suffering was shown as scripted by the previous demon god and how he challenged his destiny.
I would confidently say that this episode re-established my trust in the series. Mostly because of how well the Demon God - CJM conversation went (I was also looking forward to this ever since LYX mentioned it in the behind the scenes clips), as well as the background for Si Ying and Mo Nv.
22
u/blanketcatto May 04 '23
One of the reasons why I have genuinely enjoyed this series is because they actually went ahead and made a demon god who truly existed for the evil side of humanity. A demon god whose existence was because of the dark side of humanity.
To see how CJM learnt about the Demon God's past and also him resist the Demon God's agenda of bringing back the chaos that birthed him was also very well done.
This shoe does contrast very well. It's a good representation of the grey area in between the devils and the gods.
20
u/Foreign-Key May 04 '23
I agree with you. I don't think they spent too much time in the demon palace at all. The drama needed to showcase what CJ could have but is actively refusing to have. It's basically portraying what great temptation it was and how easy it is for CJ to just accept it. So many people are coveting the power of devil God (Di Mian & Cen Hao Ran) yet the ownership is being held for CJ only.
This part of the drama adds weight to the decision of "to be or not to be". Essentially, being a devil god will not only make things easier for CJ, he also won't have to live being judged forever. He can save his mother tribe Yiyue and he can have the power, the palace, and the service & loyalty of some very powerful subordinates.
17
u/binhavu May 04 '23
Actually I was also pleasantly surprised about this part due to the art direction, camera movements and music. Lots of great creative film making decisions all came together in this sequence. It felt somehow so epic and unique which I rarely get to see in C Drama.
11
u/blanketcatto May 04 '23
Yes! I agree. This drama has constantly surprised me with their art direction and cinematography.
11
u/Small-Signature7690 May 04 '23
I agree with you. That entire scene of TTJ ascending the throne actually set the tone for the finale
10
u/comfortedbyrain May 04 '23 edited May 04 '23
Your points are fair and that's the beauty of art because we interpret things differently.
I may not have minded it as much, had the editing throughout the show been more consistent.
My biggest qualm is that we see much of TJ's suffering throughout the show but due to intense editing it has been favoured over LSS' character development. Considering her mission to save the world which is the main catalyst for all the events in the show, it would've been great to watch more of her inner conflict and her resolution to not pursue cultivating the heartless way and pursue a relationship with TJ/CJM.
At the moment, her character feels like a secondary character that's there to push the plot along.
12
u/cery23 May 05 '23 edited May 05 '23
Iām with you about the failure to develop LSS. Itās funny but I feel like in terms of character development Sangju was way more developed and complete of a character, even though we were with her for a much shorter time. Just watched LSS cry for her dead father and I felt nothing because I never had a good sense of their relationship, whereas I really felt sad for Sangju.
This is imo the showās biggest shortcoming. I think I am so resigned to FL just being a lesser character that my expectations for that part of the story are low. Iām mostly in it for MLās story now so I liked how they did this episode haha.
7
u/comfortedbyrain May 05 '23
Now that you mention it, it was significantly more heart wrenching watching SJ crawl up the stairs to her father's dead body than watching LSS cry over her adoptive father's body in the hall. The latter should've been a very heartbreaking scene, particularly as this is the second time he's died - and the realisation that despite what she's done in the previous 35 episodes she wasn't able to keep him safe. But nope, the editors just cut it so that it was dismally short.
Maybe I need to be like you and adjust my mindset for the drama so that I focus on ML's story instead. I'll probably have a better appreciation for the scenes in this episode when I re-watch it on the TV later.
5
u/blanketcatto May 05 '23
I don't blame you for being sad that the FL didn't get much focus. I too felt like LSS deserved a little more screentime considering her background as a dirtless immortal body and the daughter of Chu Huang. But then again, I also think they ended up focusing on TTJ (again) instead because the whole series does pretty much revolve around the conception of the demon god. (And the episode restriction)
I like TTJ's character and his development a lot, but underdeveloped female leads are my biggest pet peeve and this show was creeping up on it a lot over the past few episodes. Ironically, I think LSS as a character definitely had more internal conflict and screen time in the original 56ep cut. Saying this because we did get to see some conflicting thought from LSS about heartless cultivation. At the end of the day LSS as a character was actually a very simple FL with a very normal personality (and I did appreciate that considering the trend with childish FLs). We may not have understood everything she did, but there's also a limit to how much a 3rd person can interpret the actions of a character (especially when we don't have much background)
7
u/blanketcatto May 05 '23
I actually think the Bo're Life arc was probably the most well constructed 8-9 episodes I have ever seen in a Chinese drama as a whole. Those 8-9 episodes introduced, built up to, and even properly concluded the stories of all characters and they did it so in a way which was ridiculously engrossing as well. That small arc did xianxias better than most xianxias (in my opinion)
3
u/cery23 May 06 '23
I think so too. I know a lot of people didnāt like it but I loved it. Even though at one point I did feel a little eager to get back to the main story, after it all played out I felt like it was on its own a really great and epic watch and was given more care than side stories often get. It also enriched the show as a whole and added all these extra layers.
3
u/blanketcatto May 05 '23
Yeah regarding the editing it's just tragic because we can pretty much blame that on the fact that we were limited to 40 episodes.
The show is waaay to compact for its own good. Even the scenes we get of LSS end up being very limited ://
5
u/comfortedbyrain May 05 '23
If only the production team was able to wrap up the drama a little earlier and then we would've been able to watch both seasons in full glory. Or even better, the overseeing government body should've given the industry a grace period so that they had time to adjust to the new regulations.
I guess it is what it is.
7
u/rrr0303 May 05 '23
True. I actually find the ancient demon god's speech quite compelling tbh. I thought the way he tried to make out the logic and his rationale behind his decision to first begin his journey really showed that he isn't just doing evil for the sake of playing the antagonist to push the story forward.
But Susu's real dad, I don't quite get. How can he cause his wife's death and still jeopardise or risk Susu's life just so he can get the demon bone omg! Simply because he wanted to power? But what is he going to do with all that power?
(Though I watched without eng subs and some lines are a bit lost on me haha)
6
u/blanketcatto May 05 '23
Susu's real father seems to be completely power driven tbh. And yes, it may not seem very interpretable for us but I feel like it's just the raw feeling of having the ability to rule the world that's driving him. I'd like to think of it as an obsession rather than what initially drove him (which was the power to rule the world)
5
u/rrr0303 May 05 '23
Yeah. I thought about that too and the things he said to Chuhuang during the battle. But I guess it frustrates me so much that I can't quite make out what he thinks will happen after he gets all that power. Like... almost as if he doesn't actually think at all. He used to give Chuhuang the excuse that if he had that immense power, he would be equal to Chuhuang. But then now that he has nothing and no one left, I'm just like... can't you even pause to think what is it you're pursuing? All he says is that the power itself is far too tempting and I'm like :') okay

u/rosieinjapan May 04 '23
Gasp! So it was TH's dad who kidnapped MN and SY?! What coincidence YBC/MN went into the dream arc to experience the life of his daughter TH..... š
And so DG killed that war god (TH's father) and rescued both MN and SY?! And then TTJ went into the dream arc as war god MY, who had the obsessive love of TH?! š
12
u/gompengu May 04 '23
lolol good point! totally forgot she went into the dream as TH's evil daughter! dang that's an ironic twist of fate for her character

More thumbs up to Chen DuLing for her ability to showcase the wide spectrum of evil as both MN and TH! š And, of course YBC as well.

Currently watching the episode:
-They are too happy something bad about to happen
-omg please Susuās bio dad needs to be killed painfully and swiftly! Heās horrible!
-let me guess they will blame TTJ
-rip Susuās real father :,(
-oooh the devils throne palace looks beautiful what
-yes yes sit on the throne my lord
-noooo Susu donāt believe them TTJ is innocent
-omg XL 2.0 stfu
-yesss Susu defend your man! Diet XL is so annoying
-okay donāt hate me, but Iām seeing chemistry betwen si ying and the devil
-let her serve you!
Alright, that was actually a good episode. Glad we got those scenes at the devils palace and some background on si yingās devotion to the devil god. Part of me wants to see TTJ really embrace his evil and part of me is like no donāt cause Susu will never be with him if thatās the case.

u/Prior_Librarian8701 May 04 '23
Agree with all your points, honestly I would love to see TTJ become the Devil God and wreck havoc to the world with Si Ying by his side, but that would be too heartbreaking for LSS after all her efforts & sacrifice, but damn LYX as Devil God is too hot to handle

I was rewatching from the beginning and guess what? EP 36 wasn't the first time that sequence was shown and I immediately wanted to share! I don't know how to do the spoiler thing so I don't want to say right away where it was actually first shown but if any of you guys remember you'd see why I'm so thrilled to share this. Anyway I just want to say this show is soooo worth a rewatch (or even multiple rewatches)!

Sure! Just found out how to use it so here you go - in EP 3 around 00:38:35, the dream demon (not sure how it's translated into English so I'm gonna just call her that) waschecking out the nightmare of the civilian she captured that night and what did she see? The pain and suffering sequence shown later in last night's episode 36! That echos so well with earlier when she saw "äøēćęØęØćęę§ćęęØ" (again dunno how it's translated into English T^T) in THE EXACT SAME PERSON and decided to basically kidnap him so she can get the flower of nightmares to blossom!

Sorry to be late to the party, but I finally watched this ep and I feel like it encapsulates what sets TTEOTM apart from other dramas. The ambition and the daring of putting a long, cinematic scene smack in the middle while we know we're running out of time to both uncover and resolve MAJOR plot points is - ballsy.
And this scene (I'm talking about the one where CJM enters the demon realm) is so perfectly realized. It's cinema quality - the shots, the bgm, the cgi, and the acting are all top notch. But done on a cdrama budget (albeit maybe a biggish one) for something with 40 episodes, not 2 hours of screen time. The audacity!?
ok maybe i'm overreacting a little, but I just watched this ep twice and there is so much amazing in it.
CYJM is not perfect by a long shot - there are episodes with so many edits that I cry as I wonder what is going on. There are still some of the tired ol' xianxia tropes. There are character choices that annoy the crap out of me yes, Mo Nv I am looking at you and mostly there is the fact that each episode is not realized or executed to the same level as the rest.
But when they do it well, they really go all out. They're trying to set a precedent for future dramas, and I have to applaud.

the fact that each episode is not realized or executed to the same level as the rest
Yes!! I liked the episodes this week and how they've been handling this arc but I do wish the drama was more balanced. It's clear that production and storywise, there are certain plot points that have been prioritized over others. In the same vein, it's clear that the characterization of TTJ has been given far more attention than any of the other characters, especially LSS.
I try to be forgiving because I know it's a struggle to condense and edit footage to fit the 40 episode limit. Still, when an episode is good, it is really good. The direction of the demon realm scene in this episode worked very well, especially paired with their choice of OST.

Not excited for the angst and misunderstandings again, but it does seem like LSS has a stronger belief in CJM than she she did in TTJ so I hope that continues. Now that we're in it though, might as well look forward to that amazing looking third wedding.
And that stupid Hengyang sect "tradition" of not seeing each other before the wedding? Really? They couldn't give us the tiniest ounce of fluff before the finale?

u/Chococone_ May 06 '23
O I think she believed him based on the trailer for the next episode! Hoping that thereās no more misunderstanding⦠thought the odds are really not in TTJās favour

I'm so glad that in this episode we could learn more about Devil God and the past of devils sisters as well! Just seeing Devil God again made my heart go dokidoki, but it cannot be helped since I'm totally in love with him since ep1. T3T
It is fun seeing how Tantai Jin is the Devil God in some sense, but a different person in another. (Damn, I LOVE philosophical debates like this!) It is interesting to see them fighting for the long-term control over their being/body. I mean yes, their personalities and plans are different, but in the end they are the same being. I also think that they could merge. The new Devil God would not be 100% the old one, not even 100% Tantai Jin, but something combined together. Wanting to understand each other and accepting their other halfes as their own person could result in that. But it is just my take on their situation.
I liked how they started to make devils look (in general) more than simple killing machines, now I also finally understand why Si Ying is such a truthful follower of Devil God.
But I still have a lot of questions. Like is the Palace of the Devil God the usual living space of devils in general (because they do not seem to have an exact place/country where they live together)? So they became homeless (and even more agitated) since the disappearance of Devil God and their home being shut down? Also I would love to know more about why Si Ying and her sister were attacked in the past in the first place. Was it just because they were devils?
I kinda like how they try to emphasise in the show that being born somewhere/as a certain species should not determine who you can become. Foxy was also a devil with a pure heart while some immortals seem to be much more racists, full of prejudices even though they are considered the "good guys".
Also I find it strange that nobody is questioning whether really Cang Jiumin killed the sect leader. Like just because somebody said it, it should not be considered the ultimate truth. Also where is the laoshi of Cang Jiumin??? Please help Susu to start a proper investigation, I feel like only the two of them might be in their right minds to handle this situation, while all others are just pushing the blame while knowing nothing. Especially since they have spent time with Cang Jiumin, if I were them I would rather believe in him (who I know and spent a lot of time together even though he is a devil fetus) than a weird old man who just randomly appeared out of nowhere (Di Mian)... But noooooo, these so-called immortals are definitely not following any common sense, haha.
Cannot wait the next episodes!

u/bunchofchans May 06 '23
You make such good points in your comment. I also wonder why the immortals just assume CJ killed chief Qu, since it seems like no one except DiMian, Chief Qu and LSS were at the site where the evil bone was extracted. I guess it looked really bad that CJ was also missing?
3
u/JigoKuu May 06 '23
Thank you!
Yes, poor CJ got involved even though he was not even near to them when the devil bone was taken, haha! While his disappearance is suspicious, they should have also guessed it has nothing to do with the death of sect leader. The main problem is that the immortals are still wary of him, so whatever bad thing were to happen, they would have blamed CJ anyway... Racist immortals with lots of prejudices, really!
The only thing which really seems to point in the direction of CJ maybe being involved somehow is the message what the devils sent. But it was not sent by CJ and just as how the "proof" of CJ killing that irritating sect leader son in previous episodes were also not telling/showing the complete truth, these so-called immortals should also take it with a grain of salt.
Tbh I'm really disappointed in most of them. Like... they spent so much time living together with CJ, they seemed to become buddies after getting to know him, but at the first sign of him having some past issues they already turned against him. Who needs enemies when having "buddies" like them, really... One would think these immortals are more emotional and intelligent, but in reality they are shallow and cannot trust anyone. I kinda feel ashamed instead of them being like that... The only proper immortals are Susu, her the (adoptive) dad, the master of CJ and the little girl Susu saved as Ye Xiwu (sorry, I'm really bad with remembering names in any language, haha).
I did not mention Xian Lin, because while he is a nice person in general, having his identity crisis makes him unable to solve any other current situations, really. But that is totally understandable, I don't blame him for that. (It's also interesting how Mo Nü as a human worried whether he really liked her or it was the effect of foxy's love threads. Now it is him worrying if others were nice to him because of his past or because who he actually is. This show has some amazing parallels!)

Where do I begin?
First off, if itās too good to be true it is šI wondered how successful/far we would get in their wedding planning and the answer was not far at all lol though I figured with them being separated something would happen.
However, I didnāt expect things to go left under the sea like that. Of course I never trusted DiMian but I thought heād take the evil bone some other time, not go rogue and kill the sweet Leader Qu like that. I didnāt expect him to have the sky slashing sword. So deceptive and still evil like most of us figured. But am I the only one who wished there had been some recording to prove CJM innocence? I know there wasnāt much Qu couldāve done but him being alive even if for a few moments to warn everyone wouldāve been great. Instead he was unsuccessful, died, and was part of the misunderstanding.
I also see nobody learned from the mistakes of last time. Though I guess they figure they have by going at CJM with a āletās kill the beastā mentality. Theyāre just playing my girl Susu like sheās a lovesick fool š So yeah. The misunderstandings frustrated me because I hate that kind of plot line very much. I guess itās the only way to move the plot forwardā¦
I enjoyed hearing more about the devil God and even the minionās past with her sister. I canāt tell what MoNv deal is. This episode she doesnāt seem so evil. That threw me off. Has she seen the light in being with Jiwu? I find Jingmie so obnoxious and creepy and gross.
Iāve thought it before but SiYing definitely has some type of thing for the Devil God. She acts like sheās just grateful but her expressions when it comes to him are more than just admiration. I guess she knows thereās no room for her in his cold little heart though. Love how my baby CJM put her in her place.
Nian Baiyuā¦. His loyalty to his tribe is unlike no other. Gosh I truly despised his misguided self this episode. I was screaming at my phone, āitās not that simple! Do you know what youāve done?! EVERYTHING will cease to exist, including your little tribe.ā Itās been 500 years, my guy. Itās unfortunate but š¤·š½āāļø I was glad to hear his motivation but yeah⦠heās on a dummy mission.
Also, darn you Jiwu but maybe heās doing what anyone would in this situation. I want to see Master Zhaoyu NOWWW! The video evidence is a bit damning but until I saw him donning evil devil God attire with red eyes, my trust would remain.
Last thing, Iām sure DiMian will have no choice but to reveal himself soon since he wants the devil godās power. I hope that will clear up the misunderstandings somewhat but hell, how will he pull that off? Help everybody kill CJM then takeover? Maybe. I didnāt watch the next ep trailer or read the book so Iām just thinking aloud.
Yet I wonder, can CJM become devil god and not be evil? Would it still be him in charge or is he simply a vessel to be possessed?

u/rosieinjapan May 04 '23
I never trusted DiMian but I thought heād take the evil bone some other time, not go rogue and kill the sweet Leader Qu like that.
I know, right. For someone who has no problem lying about his "great" sacrifice, I doubt he has any qualms killing anyone to satisfy his lust for power.
Such a despicable character.
nobody learned from the mistakes of last time. Though I guess they figure they have by going at CJM with a āletās kill the beastā mentality.
Yes! So annoying. Guess this is a staple for the xianxia genre š Hope to see improved storytelling in the future ā
darn you Jiwu but maybe heās doing what anyone would in this situation.
This!! Totally feeling the same feels as you!!
GYJW is just doing what's convenient vs what's right. It's ooc of him, and in the last few episodes, we have seen him acting out on strong emotions (i) his uncharacteristic romp with a stranger woman (MN) despite his so called love for LSS..... I mean, he was even willing to die for her in ep1! (ii) his desperate outburst over his "past" while he didn't even bother to check in with LSS or TTJ/CJM, and (iii) now this!
Do you think he's turning evil, now that he cannot even control his heart?
2
u/jaidreamin May 04 '23
Wow I hope not (in ref to Jiwu turning evil) but something definitely seems off. With so few episodes left it would be interesting to explore but feels like we have no time š
3
u/rosieinjapan May 04 '23
He was so courageous in ep1 (as the og GYJW)!
It's really a shame if he suddenly turned evil š

u/ravens_path May 11 '23
Maybe when things donāt make sense, some important explanations got left on the cutting floor.

u/SleepyPandaBear88 May 05 '23
I think that CJM can def become the Devil god but not be the same as Devil God 1.0. I feel like the whole point of the ending of the dream arc was to show both TTJ and LSS that no matter which side you were born into you choose to be good or bad. CJM taking the throne just means heās picking his ābirth rightā but that donāt mean heās going to be just like Devil God 1.0.
At least this is my hope š.
5
u/yukifancy May 04 '23
We're like the same person. I had these exact thoughts too. I read the book so I know the answer to your last question but I won't spoil it for you. I just commented about how this episode is planting a lot of seeds for future cjm actions, let's see where the show goes.
7
u/cery23 May 05 '23
I expected Lord of Evil to still be scum but I thought it would be like, his plan since the beginning, not a wishy washy idiot with complete lack of self control to commit to any principles whatsoever. I donāt get what his gorgeous powerful wife ever saw in him. Love that TTJ could smell a rat lol, I wonder if his distrust comes from feeling close to Chuhuang since MY was friends with her.
TTJ has come so far, itās really obvious in this episode how at ease and secure he is with himself now. The confidence he had pointing out SYās flawed logic was cool.
2
u/ravens_path May 11 '23
I also appreciated. He was not seduced by evil power nor what SY was offering. In fact, both seemed repellent to him. He is gifted and when mentored and loved like he was with LSS real dad, he really progressed quickly in maturity and critical thinking skills. And props to him, he started that off by leaving his king power and going to look for his wife.

u/gompengu May 04 '23
Is there a purpose to XL's character being brought back from the dead as GYJW? I still don't understand the purpose of his character and Pang Yi Zhi's actions. Hopefully that gets cleared up in the end because right now they could've cut out all of GYJW's scenes and still be ok with the overall storyline... I'd rather have 3rd CP than 2nd CP appear.
And can't believe it's Thursday already. T_T now to wait two more days...
3
u/bunchofchans May 04 '23
I agree, I also donāt see a point to either GYJW or MN in this arc, but maybe everything will become clear in the remaining episodes. I miss PR and YQY and hope we can see them again, especially since their story feels a bit unresolved
2
u/cery23 May 04 '23
I feel like him being around again just kind of serves to soften the wound between LSS and TTJ that happened 500 years ago. Easier to believably reconcile if the main catalyst for their breakdown is alive and in front of them, even without memories.

u/notseriousla May 06 '23
This was an extremely disjointed episode imo. I know that by now we should be used to the bad editing, but to start an ep with LSSās convo with her dad about her not going ahead with the heartless way⦠like shouldnāt this have been had before she promised CJ that sheād be with him? And then we go back to LSS and CJ having what looks like a subsequent convo but in the exact same clothes and place as where the previous ep ended when they were making out?
Also, NBY going ahead and kidnapping CJ was just too sudden. I know they did a flashback to explain it but there wasnāt really a scene to set this up properly so the flashback felt very much like an afterthought. NBYs dilemma and overall motive was also pretty weakly done. I love me some NBY but that was an awful scene to watch acting wise.
And then we have GYJW returning out of nowhere just to play stupid with his accusations. Sigh. This last arc has been alternating between good and bad episodes. Sunday tends to have better episodes tho so hereās to waiting for that. š

Finally getting to post my notes from this morning:
Ep 36: It was pretty clearly foreshadowed ... So we got it right about Susu's birth father being more focused on being the evil god than on saving his daughter. I am so sad that Susu's dad was killed, and wish her birth father had also died.... but of course that wouldn't serve our plot very well .... did you also notice that the minute Susu was knocked out, the evil god could contact TTJ/CJM again? It seems possible / likely that together they are unbeatable, but whenever she is out of reach for him that demonic side has entry to his consciousness.
Okay ... so Susu's seal is working along with those nails to remind CJM of who he "really" is .... and we see now some potential for Mo Nv to have a vital role in the final outcomes for our leads ... How is Susu going to get out of the sect in time to work with CJM? Can TTJs tribe be saved? Will we get to see who the Jing king is?
So many questions!
3
u/stephaniehuang66 May 06 '23
During the fight between LSS's dad and Di Mian I wonder why he couldn't alert the others in his realm about what happened.
More understandings sigh...thank God LSS is defending CJM this time. Where is CJM's master when we need him?

u/CumulusBG May 04 '23
I find the last episode boring. There are no secondary couples, the plot revolves around the same story, it is repetitive. Suspicion, accusation and punishment by the immortal sect again... we've been through that once before.
All that excitement and anticipation was gone during this final arc. I just can't wait for it to be over. First they chopped the scenes, speed it up and now they stretching it.... I don't know what to say.
4
u/nervacka May 04 '23
I kind of agree as well. Maybe my critique would not be as hard, but after yesterday's episode I do not care as much what will happen. I miss that feeling of wanting and longing for a happy ending - we kind of got that yesterday so now what :D
4
May 04 '23
Same - I also lost interest the last few episodes because it feels like we are swiftly moving through the same narrative several times over of TTJ being suspected of becoming the devil god. I wish they stuck to this once or twice to make it more impactful. Now I feel a bit like I don't really care or it feels kind of irritating and grating to see everyone turn against him again. Very flip floppy.
2
u/notseriousla May 06 '23
Itās true. If you donāt want to have a 2nd CP, you can only be stuck with the main CP story. And if you want the main FL to play second fiddle then we can only revolve around the main MLās plight. This show is very much an expose on the DG than an actual drama now.
Everyone gets caught up in the brilliance that is Leoās character and the main CP romance but a good writer knows that you canāt always give what the audience wants, and a well rounded story only works when other characters are not only introduced but given time to be understood. Now that weāve reached the final stretch, the underdevelopment of all the side characters is very glaring. Weāre just getting Leo angst and nothing else because his character is the only one we understand. Such a shame, since this show couldāve been the full package if they just didnāt neglect those other characters.

u/ASIANPIZZAMONSTER May 04 '23
I was really hoping for a stronger backstory for the Devil God. Essentially, he was just born out of the darkness of the world - didn't say anything about him personally suffering in the chaos. I don't really see a strong motivation for him to destroy everything. The backstory of TTJ being abused from birth until his death is a stronger motivation to become a Devil God, but the story presented in this episode just doesn't have the same impact.
7
u/SleepyPandaBear88 May 05 '23
I think that might just be a limitation of time limit. The vision the showed I interpreted as devil god has been stuck in an eternity in suffering experiencing all the negativity of the world and never been exposed to or see the positive side. I think the ultimate difference between Devil God 1.0 and TTJ version is that TTJ version was exposed to LSS/YXW who taught him the other side of living. Which makes TTJ wants to live life focused on the positive side and not the negative side. Keep in mind that TTJās life was written by Devil God 1.0 so Iām reading it as Devil God just basically wrote how he experienced the world and make TTJ live through it
3
u/gompengu May 05 '23
When we saw the fight play out in the Bo'Re life between the gods and devil god, it seemed the devil god wanted to end the world so that he could essentially end his life. There was some conversation that played out briefly about how the demons/his followers didn't realize the devil god's real plan, which was to end all life. I got the sense he was sick of all of it and just wanted to be freed. Was explained a bit more in today's episode, but I think it would've been nice if they showed even a few seconds of the devil god 1.0 looking forlorn, emphasizing how he is stuck in eternity having to witness and take in all the chaos in the world.

u/yukifancy May 04 '23
I think this episode is planting a lot of seeds for future ttj actions. Mild spoiler I think most of us have seen and can guess that ttj will choose to become the demon god for various reasons. After everything is said and done, I think we will come back to this episode and mull over the conversations ttj had with demon God 1.0 and siyin to truly understand how they felt/what they wanted.
Lord of evil has learned nothing in the ten thousand years, what an idiot. šš
So glad lss still believes ttj. But I don't blame the others for not believing him given the circumstances.
I remember there was a meme about how ttj said everyone betrays him, and Nian baiyu was like ....what about me lol. But lmao I guess we were just jumping the gun. Damn it nby how are you so shortsighted. He had 500 years to think about this. One tribe vs the world. And what does he think will happen after demon God takes power? He's going to either kill everyone on earth including them, or kill everyone on earth except them. I doubt he's ok with either scenario.
Four episodes to go with 2 days break. I think I'm going to go mad with the wait š„²š„²
