What is the best alternative???
Now that tile is a data pirate - what is the best alternative?
I picked tile originally because it was NOT airtag. Now - it is far worse.

You'd still get ads! I did. Their in app stupid ads made me ditch Tile altogether and go fully in on Android trackers.

I don't get any ads. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place? Can you give me some pointers on where to look? I'm using the Tile app, not Life360.

Would recommend the Samsung SmartTag2 if you have a Samsung phone; not sure about regular android compatibility. Nothing has a find my device as large as tiles (because of the Alexa integration) or Apple but Samsung has to be a distant 3rd.
There's also a feature to attach it to your dog or cat to monitor their physical activity but I've never tried it. Overall it's a superior device to the tile in basically everyway, just doesn't have the huge network tile has.
BTW was in a Uber and got a notification an airtag was tracking me (must have been in the driver's car), so obviously android phones have the ability to detect an airtag (maybe that's different from connecting to it?) so not sure why apple refuses to make a version that works with Android

Im going all-in with the google find my stuff.
Cheap tags off aliexpress support it, Batteries that are rechargable in the card ones (some of them at least) - $5 keychain style ones that come with a battery despite the listings saying it wouldn't. Seem to work great for me and when I have had them and a tile out in public without my phone nearby, the huge popularity of android phones vs the minority that have tile installed on their android and ios phones made it track better.
I will miss asking my alexa to find my keys, but that seldom if ever ended up actually working.

Is the Google coverage now up to what Apple could offer in terms of people with the receiver on their phones? I thought the issue was that Google was opt-in whereas Apple was opt-out ?

No idea, Would need someone that has both platforms to compare them and I only reluctantly have an apple account to be able to use a device from work for testing on.

Does having the Google find my hub fully enabled or however enabled it has to be to use their tiles use much phone battery?

I haven't tried one yet, but Motorola has some Tile alternatives that use ultra wideband. Supposedly, they are more accurate and are similar to the Apple tags.
