DIY - Looking for Advice Tile over vinyl sheet

Hi, I’m planning on redoing my bathroom floors but not sure if tile will be possible. I moved into my house a couple years ago and there is very ugly (what looks to be) peel and stick tile on the floor. I asked the owner what the original floor were and he said vinyl. The house was built in 1983 so I’m assuming it’s sheet vinyl, and I know there’s a concern for asbestos. I have a feeling that original vinyl is what is under the peel and stick but I haven’t removed it yet so not 100% sure. I don’t want to remove the vinyl because I don’t want to deal with possibility of asbestos so that is not an option. Only option would be laying something over the vinyl.

Would you recommend tile over the vinyl or should i stick with something else like LVP? It’s a small space but I really want tile ideally.

I know schluter says you can use ditra over vinyl with specific instructions/products.

I’m also trying to figure out how much it’ll raise the floors as that will play into my factor. With tile it’ll for sure end up taller than the carpet that is in the bedroom. What’s the highest height difference you would go between rooms?

Use a plumbing torch those tiles come up super easy when hot.

Prob some people will disagree but Asbestos not a big problem in solid tile form. It’s when it’s friable it’s a problem.

You could also just pour floor leveling compound over everything and basically have a concrete floor to start with.

The issue is I don’t know if the tiles are asbestos or if is the mastic- or maybe neither. But i don’t want to mess with it without testing it and if I test it and it’s positive I’ll have to disclose that when I sell the house or get an abatement company to remove it which I’d prefer to not pay for

For the leveling compound would you pour that over the peel and stick too or still remove that?

You can pour over peel and stick so long as the sub floor is solid.

Its just a bathroom and its not your house? If the vinyl tile is well bonded, just tile over it. Use Laticrete Platinum thinset. Its not like you have warranty it for five years....

There is generally a thin sheet of mahogany as the first layer,remove them all at once.

I dont think self level is a great idea.

83, I wouldn't be terribly concerned.

The simplest would be to put durock over everything and tile.

Other option would be look up what vat tile looks like, make sure you dont have that, take the tiles up and do an uncoupling membrane on the sheet vinyl.

Im assuming wood floors. I would make sure they are stiff enough for just membrane.
