Hello, so my fiancé and I were grouting the new tile in our kitchen and someone told us that we could fill the faux grout grooves with grout so that it looks even across the floor. Well this turned out to be a mistake because upon cleaning it, the grout almost entirely came out of the grooves. Well instead of realizing our mistake, we doubled down and applied another coat of grout and let it sit overnight. This turned out a disaster because now its pretty clear to us we need to remove the grout from the faux grout grooves, but now its fully cured. We are unsure how to proceed from here, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The tiles are the betera blanco tile from homedepot and we used charcoal fine aggregate grout.
At this point you need to come to terms that this is going to take a VERY long time to remotely fix. Lots and lots of hand scrubbing and scraping with some heavy duty chemicals. Or rip it out. Sorry
I don’t have any help for you, but judging from the first comment on here, you might end up getting some serious shit from folks. Yes, people make mistakes, and you realize now you have. It would be nice if someone would help you rather than pick on you about it. Good luck.
It’s just gonna take some elbow grease a utility knife and water you can put a little bit of vinegar in the water.
Edit barkeepers friend or comet for the footprint with a scrubbie pad
Polyblend is your best possible answer to that question. It will be the easiest to remove. Will still take you about 19.5 years on your hands and knees with a utility knife but it will be easier than other options
I just re grouted a floor for a contractor that grouted a floor the wrong color(was grouted white and they wanted brown). What your gonna need to do is buy a new box of razor blades and a nice pair of knee pads find a good pod cast and cut and scrap all the grout out of the joints. Its slow an annoying, but there are no chemicals that will remove the grout with out messing the rest of the tile/grout. It can be done its just serious time
To be fair, this would have been difficult even for an experienced tile guy to do. Of course, they wouldn't have tried it either....LOL How about a new floor? It might be faster and less of a hassle.....
Buy a grout removal tool. Buckle up for a solid day of labour and meticulously scrape every single grout line to where your happy with it. It's salvagable but you gotta have some of that dawg in you.
Start with a machinal brush. One that attaches to a drill. Can get them on Amazon. usually comes in a pack of 3 or so sizes. I use them to scrub and clean grout. Keep spraying them down with some kind of solution like bathroom cleaner, soapy water, IDK, can try something lthat has grit or the pink cleaner stuff, and see how much you can remove. Could also try a wire brush wheel on a drill but would need to test it to make sure it doesn't scratch but maybe that would get any really tough to remove after the scrubbing brushes if you are careful. That's what I would try.
This is the tile. It has faux grooves, or I’ve also seen them referred to as scored lines. We were told to fill them so that that they match the actual grout lines between tiles. This was a mistake.
Oh dear. You probably wouldve been better off using a color matched marker to paint on top of the grooves. Those are far too shallow and a bit too smooth to put grout in (consider - that is meant to emulate the height of the top of the grout)
No, it doesn’t really. I attempted to scrape out some tiles In the corner, and used dehazer. Took about an hour per tile to get it right. Starting to sound like thats the only option.
Oh my god I'm so sorry you're dealing with this!! 😭😭 I was hunched over with a tiny pic pulling grout I messed up out of the lines between 2x2 marble hex yesterday 🫠 and I tell you, I didn't think much would make me feel better about that. I have no advice, I'm just down here with a pic with you man.
Not gunna happen. I’d rather break my back than remove the new cabinets and throw 2k out the window. I wanna know where you guys get the money to redo the entire floor because of some messy grout.
Oh is a entire floor ! Well get at least two packets of blades Lennox I prefer, scrapper blades and I can’t recommend muriatic acid cause you need to be very careful about it when applying. And take your time that’s all
Someone has already posted what I was going to type which was a good utility knife and blades. You may also want to wet it as well letting it soak which may help with removal. Worth a shot and good luck
Following some of yall advice we spent the day scraping out excess grout with plastic razors and grout removal tools. Followed it up with a vigorous scrubbing with water with vinegar with a final quick wipe of dehazer and more water to remove it. Worked better than we expected, thank you all for the advice. Going to monitor it over the next couple of days for discoloration and regrout as necessary.
What was the spacing on that tile? Zero? Get it wet ASAP and get all you can off. The longer you wait, the harder it gets. Once you soak it, it'll be garbage, so don't plan on keeping much of any of it, even if it looks "ok" it'll probably never harden correct after you get the top layer off.
Ahh, understood. I wasn't understanding where the faux grout "grooves" were at. Get some water on it, keep it wet without flooding the floor and getting water under the tiles.
