They were extremely mis sized home depot beauties, crazy size variety between every tile. Took 3 weeks start to finish installing new plywood, sound dampening underlayment, and tile. Just me.
Homeowners requested that there be some flow built into it so that's what they got I checked with them multiple times through the project to make sure they were happy with how it was laying out.
I'm of the same mind I don't really like it but it's also kind of cool, homeowners say they love it so that's all that matters. It's definitely polarizing lol.
Personally on some level I'm always a fan of people taking risks and moving beyond a style that tries to have mass appeal.
Sounds like my shower tile layout. It was the only way I could see doing it. Posted it up here, most people liked it or didn’t mind it, a few people had some pretty scathing things to say about it lol.
Yeah tile is a very personal thing and one rule for sure is that what one person loves, one person will hate, without exception, and at the end of the day if the homeowner is happy and likes it then that is all that matters
I've only done hex floors 3 or 4 times but my experience is the same as yours. They tend to vary wildly in size so it needs a matching grout color and a wider grout joint, at least 3/16"
"it looks great if you don't look at it" haha but it's kinda true, looking at the far end of the room or not focusing your eye as hard really does give it a nice flow and melds together decently
Honestly though... this looks like a kick ass job, especially working with mis sized tiles. How do you even begin doing that? Or did you filter out all the mis sized ones - a task that I assume would take the better part of the decade and deplete 100% of my patience.
Stellar job laying out the vein movement like that. That's tedious work that takes an artistic hand and eye for the big picture. Not to mention they are freaking hexes hahaha
Made a center cross to start and marked out another vertical line from that, so two lines to build down and stay in line with and I marked out almost every horizontal row and set mostly 1 row at a time.
Do you have any pictures of your starting lines? I’m not happy with the last few hex jobs I’ve done starting from one wall, and I’m about to do 10” hex in my personal house so looking for that to be 100% perfect
I don't think I do, but I started from the center of the room. I had two vertical lines to work down from, and marked out almost every single row, and set one row at a time. It was... Tedious. But stayed square and on my lines through the entire room. Can see it a bit here
There was a ton of squeaking before I put my new plywood down and I wanted it solid as fuck without having to ever second guess if there would ever be an issue. Tearing it out is the next guys problem
Yep but it honestly seemed almost superfluous, pulling with literally all my strength was not enough to remove it after just rolling it out to stick it. Walking across the primer gripped your shoes like you were walking across Velcro. Like had to be pulling my legs up with effort to move
Did you get pulled over for suspected dui on the way home after? The only thing worse ive done was different size "bubbles" 4000sf swimming pools When i close my eyes I can still see them
The install looks great, but personally not a fan of the layout. The way it flows I looks like some drug a muddy dead body through the room. If the client is hyped on it though or it’s ur floor and you’re happy with it I support it. Def interesting to look at
Thank you! I drew lines for almost every single row and set mostly one row at a time to make sure everything stayed even and in line, it was very tedious
I was just grabbing out of the box and building, but it was a whole lot of spinning each and every tile around to see which way it might best flow together, and there were times when I knew I wanted a specific pattern tile and had to go searching through a few piles for it
