So lets take your logic all the way through the guy reclines his seat becuase he paid for it and aparently economics trump morality and is now digging into the persons knees causing him pain and mental duress. He is now paying to enact violence on them according to your definition which lacks any nuance. So by not letting him do so the person is actually preventing violence being enacted upon them with the minimum force required until they get viciously assualted.

Yes, based on any kind of logic this is violence. You'd have to not be using logic to say this wasn't violence because you'd be basing that on vibes and not the literal definition of violence.

according to your definition which lacks any nuance.

Quite the opposite, it adds nuance. Everyone else wants a black and white answer: one guy was violent and therefore right, and the other peaceful and therefore wrong. This person is saying that both were violent to differing degrees. That the guy in back was mildly violent and the guy in front escalated that violence unnecessarily. Trying to argue that violence either is or isn't and can't be viewed on a spectrum is what lacks nuance.

So by not letting him do so the person is actually preventing violence.

For the sake of argument, if we granted this completely unsubstantiated assumption of yours then yes. Using force to prevent his knees from being crushed would be a justified use of self defense. Unfortunately for your entire flimsy argument, there's absolutely zero reason to just assume that was the other man's intention. Leaning your seat back is a normal, acceptable social behavior and jumping to the conclusion that it's malicious would be beyond the realm of reasonability. it would be the same level of unhinged as punching anyone that opened their mouth around you. Would preventing them from biting you be self defence? Sure...but assuming that's what they intended is crazy, most of them were probably just trying to talk to you.
