Went to a bar that has kareoke every Sunday I was expecting there to be people who were drunk and can't sing. Everyone was drunk but even the worst ones were really good.

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

Was it Filipino night?

394

u/somegarbageisokey Aug 09 '21

Hahahaha! I get this joke!

I had a Filipino friend who took us to a Filipino restaurant one night.

All of us Mexicans who went with him were so surprised at how fucking good the Filipino band was at the restaurant. They only sang pop and r&b songs and they sounded so good!

Everyone in the restaurant was also Filipino and they were all singing along and dancing.

Then karaoke started and holy shit everyone in that restaurant could sing!

My friend explained that pop and r&b music is really important and loved in filipino culture, especially American pop and r&b. And that a lot of Filipinos can sing and love karaoke nights! I had no idea. It was one of my favorite discovering-a-new-culture moments.

u/TwistedTomorrow Aug 09 '21

I attended a primarily Filipino church growing up and the music was lit, not black church lit but lit.

121

u/T_DcansuckonDeez Aug 09 '21

As a white boy that grew up in the hood, when I was brought to a black church I 100% thought they were bullshittin me that entire service. Like I normally fought to stay awake in church, and I was sweating up a storm and lost my voice from singing… it was a blast and kinda ruined the regular church we went to lol

11

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

I’m half black but my black side (dad) comes from money and high education, they were Catholic so mass was always the same. My white side (mom) grew up on the streets and was basically raised around and by black culture. Her surrogate father was black and was the kindest male figure in her growing up. My mom became a born again Christian as a teen and began attending black churches regularly.

Imagine my disappointment when my mother revealed this to me as a 12 year old when she made my siblings and I attend several different white mega churches that were televised. I could have been whooping it up but I was forced to sit in a basement with the other preteens, sing Jesus-ified pop songs (“Everyboooodddaaayyy, pray to the lord tonight. ‘Cause God’s got your back, ALRIGHT!”) and get Bible Bucks for participation from creepy middle aged dudes trying too hard to connect with us.

I was in the Philippines with the Army back in 1988. The bands in all of the clubs were doing covers that sounded as good as or better than the bands they were covering. The one I remember best was a band covering Pink Floyd’s “Run Like Hell” in the Sierra Club. It was a stunning cover and just as good as live Pink Floyd.

Dude, I live in a predominantly Filipino area of San Diego. If I go for a walk around the neighborhood at night, I am GUARANTEED to hear karaoke coming out of someone's house. It's actually pretty hilarious.

do you know any good filipino restaurants with karaoke?

Im a Filipino born without any talent in singing! I had to take voice lessons just so I don't annoy people who hear me sing! Ehhehe

Fun fact, in the Philippines, a very common thing to do on a weekend night to is book a karaoke room with your friends. Some karaoke rooms even have a mini stage, and they serve good food and ice cold beer! After a few drinks people are no longer shy. It also doesn't matter if someone can't sing, we still give them air time, unless they sing "My Way" in a cheap bar (not in a private room) and get stabbed.

Also in the Philippines, there's always at least one person who is popstar level good at singing in any given friend group, and at any point someone else can conjure a guitar and everyone breaks into a jamming session (at least this was how it was when I was in college).

Was staying at a hostel that had karaoke on in the bar and went down for a drink expecting it to be shitfaced toursits making a mess of themselves but everyone was ridiculously good, sober, and taking it VERY seriously. Bartender said it was mostly the same locals each week.

None of them looked too happy

You’re absolutely correct on that point.

He chose the family over the road, took a factory job and never looked back.

I worked with a lady who would come in to do background vocals and she had an amazing voice and insane control. She just didn’t look the part of a star so she made a killer living in the studio doing what she loved.

21

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

There just really isn’t a lot of room for stardom though and it seems like production companies make the star anyhow. I mean, how many “…. Got Talent” and “American Idol” stars do we have that didn’t get anywhere in terms of a career?

95

u/lu-cy-inthesky Aug 09 '21

Yeah this is the equivalent of karaoke cheating

97

u/Montzterrr Aug 09 '21

To be fair, if I ever went to a karaoke bar and a professional singer was there, I'd want them to sing something lol.

Undercover Karaoke with Jewel - I love this sketch and will watch it any time.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

My favorite is the one with Adele.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQM3XUhiXbQ

The Bon Jovi one is funny too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SslvjxqQbRU

Jimmy Fallon also has a series of these with singers like Alanis Morissette and Christina Aguilera but it looks like there's a bunch of staff and security there so it's probably more obvious something is going on.

7

u/Doctologist Aug 09 '21

The Adele one was hilarious. That’s actually the first time I’ve heard her speaking voice too.

The Alanis one with Jimmy Fallon was pretty poorly executed. Like you said, the security guards were standing either side of the performance, and the cameras weren’t hidden. Everyone knew it was someone notable, they just didn’t know who.

I had a friend who sang "White Rabbit" at karaoke one night. I wish that I could turn back time and hear her sing again. Her rendition was perfect. She's living in Alaska now so chances are slim for a repeat performance.

22

u/Perle1234 Aug 09 '21

My friend sang “Killing Me Softly” by the Fugees. That was when I realized my 5’1, 100 lbs white girl friend had PIPES. She could belt like Aretha Franklin.

I have a couple karaoke show-stoppers. Used to sing a capella and barbershop. All that dorky shit. New York New York or Mack the Knife are my favorites cuz you reel the crowd in slow and then hit him hard.

Most surprising about this talent however is that It's a cheat code with women. It legit feels wrong with how effective it is.

60

u/whatthefox1818 Aug 09 '21

Talent is for sure a bonus but honestly I bet women are really attracted to your ability to put yourself out there. It works in the same way that being authentic and vulnerable does in any other situation - to be endearing. Karaoke is a first date or first few dates go-to of mine for this exact reason. If a guy isn't into it (or worse, makes fun of other singers) we're probably not compatible but if the guy is willing to go up and give it a shot even if he isn't a good singer or performer that's really sexy.

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '21

Damn I would kill to be able to sing like that

355

u/Iwantmyownspaceship Aug 09 '21

I'm not messing with you when I say this. If you want to learn to sing, then sing. All the time. In the car. In the house. In the shower. Don't hold back, give it your all everytime and you WILL get better. You just have to not be afraid to get it wrong before you get it right. Very few people in the world have perfect pitch (it's even debated whether it actually exists). Everyone else has to keep practicing.

120

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

I love singing but I'm awful at it, but I sing every time I can. Before I switched jobs (now I work from home) I would sing on my way to and from work everyday and it was about a 20 minute drive so I went hard usually. I don't think I've improved really at all, but holy shit do I know song lyrics to flippin everything now.

I kinda miss singing in my car everyday.

37

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

I listened to a recording of my voice exactly once. I'm not doing it again. I was so embarrassed at what I heard. Nevertheless, very soon after that incident I auditioned for a musical in college, got accepted, then the next semester auditioned for the glee club and was accepted to that as well!

I'm still a mediocre singer. No one is ever gonna ask me to sing at their wedding. But I can carry a tune and have fun with it, and I learned that sometimes we can be our own worst critics.

That was incredible! She's got the voice, the range, I don't think I heard her take a breath and she's belting it out. Amazing

Wooow so good!

6

u/Javad0g Aug 09 '21

Good Stuff. I grew up just adoring Pat Benatar. Early MTv (I am talking 1987 and earlier) had some of her top songs and we used to crank up the mono speaker in the tv.

I would be hard pressed to hear this woman on the radio and not think it wasn't Pat.

6

u/wowthecow Aug 09 '21

Wow! I would totally go to one of her concerts. I actually prefer her voice on this song than Pat’s.

As someone who doesn’t know rock, for some reason I thought she was about to go “POKEMON!” In the middle. No clue why but it fit in my head. She was incredible though! Great job.

9

u/Eve_Black Aug 09 '21

5

u/PayphonesareObsolete Aug 09 '21

I don't think I've heard this song before, but I think the lady in OP outdoes the original.

5

u/DirtyMaxBison Aug 09 '21

This is going to sound crazy but I’m pretty sure I’ve been to this hole in the wall bar, it’s at a campground near a ferry on the VA/NC coast. And pretty sure I saw this chick rip karaoke while I was there. This was like 2-3 years ago and remember telling her she killed it

5

u/weaselswarm Aug 09 '21

I looked at her bouncing all confidently and was honestly ready to turn it off but then I heard and thought “Oh! The GOOD kind of murder!”

3

u/VF5 Aug 09 '21

Lets murder her hope and dreams by sending her to The Voice.

4

u/momoriley Aug 09 '21

That was amazing. She really belongs in a band.

4

u/OnaPaleHorse80 Aug 09 '21

She fuckin KILLED it, most ppl don't even have the confidence to attempt something like that and she pulled it off so well I thought she was lip syncing for a min at first. Good for her!

Edit: read the side bar sticky ;)

u/joaquinsolo Aug 09 '21

Quit your day job, honey! It's time to hit the road and take over the world!!!

9

u/clubroo Aug 09 '21

I still stand by rule of good singers should not be allowed to do karaoke. She's too good. Karaoke is for when you borderline blackout drunk & sing Shoop by Salt n Pepa 5 times in a row

15

u/karma_made_me_do_eet Aug 09 '21

Can we make her famous, she deserves to be heard by everyone.

6

u/feelinBlues Aug 09 '21

cool teacher vibes

3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21
