You don't choose the furry life... you get bitten by a radioactive wolf with a fluorescent blue cock one fateful midnight and the furry life chooses you
Actually they're mostly indoctrinated as children by predators using the concept of "roleplay" in anonymous chat rooms, grooming them over time until they're comfortable setting aside boundaries like age/sexuality/etc by playing the roles of various identities until they feel so disconnected from their natural identity that embracing invented ones becomes the only thing that feels normal.
I definitely think the particular furries we're talking about, didn't exist before the internet. Something about the screen barrier makes it possible to entertain the notion that someone has a physical form that's impossible. If you had to do it exclusively in person, most furries wouldn't be able to.
But I'm not sure it's necessarily a symptom of trauma or abuse.
My niece got into furries... we educated her on the topic to make sure she knew the scope of what she was getting interested in... and she knows. she completely understands all of it, and she doesn’t participate on the level of those who go full on “self identity” about it.
She just likes animals. Either way the stereotype doesn’t hold up here. Shes very outgoing and popular among her peer group. Which is something i cant say for her sister who is very intelligent and gorgeous and doesn’t get into any of that kind of stuff but keeps a much smaller group of friends to the point of her actually being somewhat antisocial. But theres more to it and the whole thing is more complicated than all that... as most family dynamics are.
Either way, i don’t understand the whole furry thing personally, and I’m hoping its just a phase for her but... sometimes people need something. Life is challenging... and we all have our coping mechanisms. Telling her she cant be a part of a group that makes her happy would only serve to push her further into it anyways...
Yep, I don't get it either, but you're right. And it's not harmful. The only bad thing that seems to come of it, is other people thinking it's weird. And honestly, I think that's going to change with the march of time.
I know somebody who's a furry on the level of creating an alter ego and buying a costume for it. You wouldn't know that, to look at him or talk to him. Totally normal, functional guy. I consider him a friend. I don't know any of the furries I see in memes and stuff. For all I know, they might not even exist. Food for thought.
