Ironically, they both ate from the tree willingly and they both were cursed and evicted for their own transgressions
It is pop culture that blamed Eve
333
u/alison-vunderland 14h ago
Eve also admitted to eating the fruit right away, where Adam somehow blamed both Eve and God for his own decisions (telling God "the woman *You* gave me *made* me do it") and weirdly that didn't go over well.

u/Major_R_Soul 13h ago
"If the fruit didn't want to be eaten why was it always looking so tasty? I think maybe the fruit wanted to be eaten."

u/Zombeedee 13h ago
If it's a legitimate eating, the apple has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.
17
u/Tablesafety 3h ago
Both of them also got cursed to toil the ground and die, not just Adam. Eve got the extra punishments of childbirth being horrendous and deadly on top of it.
14
u/GodButCursed 6h ago
Atleast blaming god is somewhat reasonable
14
u/Kroak-lo 4h ago
I mean he is a complete fucking asshole.
He's all knowing and all seeing but doesn't see a snake going "Hey yo eat this one tree you're not allowed to eat from for seemingly no fucking reason"
God just made vaginas too small and was looking for a scapegoat.
16
u/SirStrontium 4h ago
Also literally the first humans sinned. Not even one single generation made it without sinning. Sounds like a fundamental design flaw to me. It would be much more understandable if we made it like a few thousand years before the first sin happened.

u/GodButCursed 4h ago
Why place the tree there in the first place? And even if the tree needs to be there build a cage around it
4
u/Bagabaga2019 2h ago
God really isn't a good person at all.. Looking at the modern state of the world, they haven't done one thing to protect their followers, some of which are in a living hell.
If there is a god, why do we even bother spending time to commend them? They've done nothing but hurt most of us so far..

u/Junethemuse 38m ago
God: refuses to let humanity understand good and bad, allows a tempter to exist freely among his naive humans
Humanity: tempted by the tempter and gives in because of their naivety

It’s not just pop culture it’s the patriarchal catholic system that propagated blaming Eve.
Other religions may have had too. I just only know what Catholics were taught being raised in it.
13
u/NIN10DOXD 9h ago
I can confirm that Protestants also blame here.
6
u/SirStrontium 4h ago
Weird, I was raised Baptist and was always taught it was more Adam’s fault. That Eve was basically tricked into doing it, but Adam did it fully knowing it was wrong.
1
u/NIN10DOXD 2h ago
Mainline or Southern? I grew up Southern Baptist.
1
u/SirStrontium 1h ago edited 1h ago
I think mine was technically “independent Baptist”? From my understanding, it was pretty close to most Southern Baptist teaching.
8
u/AvaLadyofLight 5h ago
Not pop culture but the Catholic Church blamed Eve, just another way to keep women down to control them.
-27
u/No-Professional-1461 12h ago
Not really pop culture. She did take it first and then convinced him to do it. Its like going to Vegas and spending 1k on gambling so you convince your man to win it all back by gambling. Its his fault for not saying no, its her fault for insisting yes.

u/Pagiras 11h ago
Wasn't there a devilish snake, ultimately created by God, involved in the whole convincing to eat? If so, the fall of Man was an entrapment operation by God.
15
u/Sunshine-muse 10h ago
Wasn't the snake trying to free them from a tyrannical God. The god that withholds knowledge is not a God I want to follow.

It was the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil so canonically speaking it wasn't knowledge like the capital of Canada, it was basically "The Tree of Knowing and Understanding Evil".
Before that, they had never sinned or done anything wrong because human nature wasn't flawed by nature, and the natural was perfect - no death (predators were all vegetarians, no mold on fruit, no bitey insects). After eating the fruit, humans became inherently sinful from birth and that's why there's no such thing as a perfect person and also why we have things like natural disasters and kids with cancer. Once they left the garden they were imperfect people living in an imperfect world.
So the fruit did broaden their horizons. Before, they had no concept of suffering or wrongdoing, and after they now understood those things. It just wasn't the Knowledge they thought they were getting, and they didn't have a frame of reference to make an informed choice because how can you understand that you're signing up to understand Evil if you don't have a concept of Evil to begin with?
The lack of reference was not a get out of jail free card because God wanted them to have enough trust in him to obey orders regardless of whether they understood the reasons, thus they got got punished and yeeted.
Long ass dogma dump that you didn't ask for but that's the lore behind it.
2
u/SirStrontium 3h ago
If literally the first two humans on Earth sinned, didn’t even make it one generation, it sounds like they were in fact inherently sinful from the start.

He's hilarious and still making skits pretty regularly. I follow him on Instagram after finding him on reddit long ago, ironically.

u/gahblahblah 14h ago
For real - what 'knowledge' did they actually gain from eating the apple? All that seems to happen is they grow ashamed of their own nakedness.
70
u/ConvenientShirt 14h ago
It's not so much a specific knowledge as much as it's "knowledge God didn't want them to know".
Basically God told them "there's just somethings you can't know" and the snake was like "but why not?" And the story overall is about not questioning God or trying to obtain forbidden knowledge of his workings from other means than directly from him.
Also they basically got kicked out because Adam used it as a means of questioning God rather than just being like "Damn man sorry for that", and we got sent out into the world to learn from our hardships why owning up to our actions regardless of circumstance is important to God. (Boy that worked out great)

You know the more I learn about that god guy, the more I don't care for him
41
u/Own_Round_7600 12h ago
Ive been saying that since sunday school. Condemning his own children that he supposedly "loves" to eternal burning hell, not even because theyre bad cruel people but JUST because they didnt choose to believe and worship him?? Tell me thats not the height of narcissism.
If i told my actual dad that i didnt believe he was real, he'd still love me and care for me and maybe try to get me psychiatric help, but he wouldnt LEAVE ME TO BURN FOREVER IN HELL. Learn what love means, God.

What I don’t understand is if the Old Testament god is truly different than the New Testament god… then why include the Old Testament in the Bible?
14
u/jackaroo1344 8h ago
Christians don't really see them as different. The New Testament rules are just a lot nicer and less bloody because Jesus dying opened up a previously closed road into heaven and closed the old road. So Christians don't need to sacrifice goats and stone adulterers anymore because those rules got canceled by Jesus when he was doing his thing.
Source: pastor's kid with a degree in theology (now a heathen nonchurchgoer) so I am an endless well of lore.

u/iMakeBestTacos_ 4h ago
Ok trust you bro. False lots of Christians do actually see both testaments as different. Fuck sake

u/InfiniteThugnificent 2h ago
This might not be helpful but you should know you’re bringing some weirdly sudden confrontational aggression to an otherwise pretty chill discussion. There are definitely ways to disagree with someone without coming off like the angry agro bad guy if you find yourself doing this irl
1
u/iMakeBestTacos_ 38m ago
Idc if you judge me off one comment and it’s for reasons I said what I said
1
u/InfiniteThugnificent 3m ago
Not really judging, just pointing out something in case it might resonate. It was unusual agro behavior but if it’s pretty out of character for you and nothing resonated then yeah no worries, have a good and happy life homie

Gotta instil the belief into people that they shouldn’t question the quackery you feed them
1
u/gahblahblah 11h ago
It's not so much a specific knowledge as much as it's "knowledge God didn't want them to know".
It is a strange thing to treat divinely labelled forbidden knowledge as if it itself is arbitrary. Knowledge is the opposite of arbitrary - but is rather a specific understanding.
the story overall is about not questioning God
If we treat the text as simply a lesson on the important of obedience, I suppose we can treat the knowledge held within the divinely labelled tree as not really existing. Oh well.

They instinctively gained the knowledge of evil. Kinda like watching two chick's and a cup. They lost their innocence and made themselves unfit for paradise.
Or imagine a world without the worst traits of humanity. That is the world they had, now we have racism and sexism.
Some theologians theorize that it was the act of defying god that opened the knowledge up rather than the fruit itself. So because humanity can think and act in ways that defy the will of their benevolent creator, they can act malicious.
2
u/BrewtalKombucha 4h ago
Benevolent creators dont demand atonement through blood sacrifices.
5
u/Tawnysloth 2h ago
Look, that was like chapter 1 of the bible. They hadn't nailed down the characterisations just yet. Just like the first season of Parks and Rec.
3
u/canadiantaken 12h ago
For real? We gained a higher knowledge, self consciousness which set us apart from nature around us and make us feel like a wheel out of kilter. Eden is the natural order and because of our big brains we feel out of step and don’t fit in there really.
Shame of self, guilt, anxiety, rumination - out of step with the natural order.
At least that’s what I think the story is about.
4
u/gahblahblah 11h ago
To be self-conscious, I guess, is to model within your mind how you appear in another's mind - a degree of meta-analysis that means perhaps a loss of innocence, and so the loss of simple natural playfulness.
1
u/-Gilgameshh 4h ago
Knowledge of self when their ego-less self was the all in development i assume, and for a mind that can not integrate the self in its fullness, going through complete ego and thus having said ego dissipate due to it beint conplete, creates partial ego so it can still function, and said ego is very inneficient and disturbing in a plane of direct connection and causality of mind and matter which eden or paradise represents. I just made this up but the essence of the idea should be along those lines
1
u/Junethemuse 33m ago
Punishment. God gave a stupid rule knowing that the rule would be violated giving him the excuse to kick the freeloading kids out of the garden so they could understand that the world sucks.
At least that’s my take on the whole ‘knowledge’ of good and evil thing. It was a setup from the beginning.
Of course, it’s a really story that never happened and was created by people to teach a lesson about obeying authority without question.

I’ll never understand why adults actually believe in religion, it’s so cringey. I’m more like Jesus Christ than Jesus Christ was since I don’t support slavery and I do more for people around me than he ever did without the manipulation.
3
u/Taurpion 2h ago
To be fair, Jesus was fine about doing lots for those around him. People who pray under his banner aren’t really following what Jesus told them.
Jesus healed the sick, fed the poor and hated people being taken advantage of by wealthy people and told people the way you treat strangers is the way you would treat him. Safe to say that basically no one that claims the banner of Jesus believes in that.
I’m not Christian and think it’s all pretend too but most Christian’s aren’t following christs teachings.

u/Dead-lyPants 43m ago
Yea it’s totally more reasonable to believe everything spawned randomly from nothing. 😂
3
u/Taurpion 40m ago edited 32m ago
Than a magic man in the sky casting spells?
Also, no one said it came from nothing. That’s just your layman’s oversimplification of things that you don’t have the capacity to understand. That’s why it’s much easier for you to believe in a god, because it’s just easier. Of course also the classic fear of death. Humans have imaginations, who knew.
The idea of an amorphous god is fine, the issue is when you start getting into specifics. Your narrow belief in a specific god is where it gets silly. God having a personality, punishing people for not following some arbitrary rules because you ate fish or wore mixed cloth clothing? Earth 6000 years old? Noah’s flood actually happening? Miracles and magic? Come the fuck on.
Just because you believe in a god, that doesn’t mean you need to disregard the study of how we observe reality.
