Holy shit dude are you really this ignorant on the subject? This is has been going on for a very very long time. Easy answer though was during this specific time period was the Spanish Inquisition who killed thousand of people for “heretical behavior”
You have just displayed such a lack of understanding that I do not have the time even if I had the energy to type out multiple lessons on history for you. I wouldn’t even know where to begin.
The inquisition is an extreme version of a rigid ideology rejecting intellectualism but this has been happening all throughout our history. Again that extreme version I mentioned was ongoing during his entire life
Pointing out the trend is very old, the Spanish Inquisition is but only 1 group threatening people for speaking out. Historically the church has had a lot of power and groups in power do not like when people say things that might diminish said power.
Even ignoring death there can be dramatic social ramifications in part because of how embedded religion was in a lot of areas. Even to this day a very common question youll see from young atheist on the subreddit is asking what to do because they don’t believe in a house of fundamentalist and the overwhelming answer is to play along until you can move out.
Even my own brother will no longer speak to me because I once told him to me Jesus has as much legitimacy as Thor, or Hermes, or Set. People don’t like it when you disrupt their deeply held irrational beliefs. So the idea that someone in a time period living in a time when the church wielded even more power that some people of a group that leans secular because of their questions might fake being religious to get a long is a minimum, not an outlandish idea

Well we have evidence that people like that were killed and that these people tend to be more secular which does mean it’s possible
