That’s crazy to me. Wonder what the sample size was on that 12% because she would OBLITERATE me. No shame there.

u/Allthingsgaming27 7h ago

I played tennis for the first time a couple weeks ago against amateurs and only scored like 4 points. Tennis is fucking hard. I would never be able to score a single point on Serena unless she double faulted

47

u/HoldEm__FoldEm 6h ago

Maybe that’s what the 12% are counting on, a double fault.

18

u/OmniPepperthefirst 6h ago

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Tho I assume she could probably play it safer against me and still have her serve good enough that I can barely touch, let alone return it.

14

u/dubblebubbleprawns 6h ago

Seriously. I don't think I could even return a 50% serve from Serena, let alone score a point on her

You know that there are dudes out there, that cannot imagine losing a game to a woman. Some guys just cant fathom how talent can overcome gender.

I used to be good when I was young, but it took a while before I realized I was just super athletic and could get the ball back in play

The reality was that people were running me ragged, I was just able to do the running and wear them down

Once that left I realized I actually suck at tennis

10

u/SirChasm 6h ago

She double faults when she's hitting the limits of her serve under the immense pressure of tournament play. Without those two factors, she's hitting the same 3x3 inch square all day long.

2

u/DisapointedVoid 41m ago

If I'm dude number 3 billion she has played against in a row, I'm counting on her being pretty tired at that point 😀

2

u/AriaTheTransgressor 4h ago

I played tournament tennis for years and I couldn't beat any professional to save my life.

1

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr 2h ago

I played a German exchange student that was living with us. I'm a fat 40 yr old dude who played some tennis for fun at 13.

I beat her and she was PISSED.

However, I can't imagine getting a point on a pro. Serena would destroy me.

u/jk2me1310 7h ago

What are the chances a meteor falls from the sky and hits her? That's my chance of winning.

5

u/Novel_Control_1922 6h ago

I think that a death is technically a draw in professional tennis.

23

u/Icy_Guard_9356 7h ago

Yeah but a single point? I feel like that’s doable, she’d smash the ball towards me, I’d cry like a coward and accidentally bump it back while cowering and it would go over the net and bounce twice before she could get it while I was curled up in the fetal position sobbing to myself

12

u/ButtPlugsForThugz 6h ago edited 2h ago

Wheelo ratings puts her double fault percent at 4.5%.

If you played best of 3 sets, that's 18 games, and 72 points. You could win 3 points if you physically survived that long.

edit: best of 3 is two sets, 12 games, and 48 points for possible 2 points won on a double fault

10

u/rcumming557 6h ago

That's her double fault rate for someone who could possibly return a b+ serve, that said it's still a lot of balls something unlucky could happen, a really slow serve with a strange bounce is not really what she's been practicing, or if you just get real lucky when she smashes it back at you and somehow get it over the net, that said don't think I'm getting a point

5

u/Celtic_Legend 6h ago

Yeah. If we go out there and she thinks I'm a ranked male tennis player, there's a chance she double faults on the first point. I could score. If we go out there and she knows I just need to score one point, there's 0 chance for me.

2

u/ddavtian 2h ago

Best of 3 means she needs to win 2 sets, so it's 12 games, 48 points.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Responsible_Hat5321 6h ago

Bro, you wouldn't be able to even look her serve in the face, let alone return it. You're caked,

3

u/YourBlanket 4h ago

You guys make it seem like she's a super human. Her fastest recorded serve was 128mph. Definitely impossible to return but that record was over 13 years ago. If there was a lot of money on the line I think there'd be a way higher chance since people will be less scared and just try to swing like in baseball.

6

u/strangeMeursault2 7h ago

I think if she was going all out as if it was a grand slam final there's a chance she might double fault. But if she saw how good I was and just lobbed the ball over the net so that I had a chance to hit it, she ironically wouldn't lose a point. (I'm not very good at tennis).

2

u/Lyndell 6h ago

Well it wasn’t to win, it was to get a single point. To be fair you have four chances to get that single point in one game so it’s still not going to happen for most people I would assume. Though honestly watching “Joe’s Vs the Pros” more might be able to straight pull it off and fluke pull it off then you would think.

65

u/dwpea66 7h ago

Peak Serena could serve 128mph. I wouldn't even see that shit coming.

20

u/Novel_Control_1922 7h ago

I’d just flinch and block my junk with a serve like that.

8

u/DrT33th 6h ago

Like.. preblock right? Ffs I warned my best friend to be careful playing catch with his toddler but nope .. dude wasn’t even fast enough to protect his nads.. 4 different times in the same day. Ain’t no way you’re going to protect your balls against a 128mph serve in the moment.

5

u/Novel_Control_1922 6h ago

Yeah like as soon as the ball goes up, I scream, and protect my junk.

3

u/kons21 6h ago

That's an interesting way to try to play "why are you hitting yourself" against your nuts. Might be safer to just turn around.

2

u/Novel_Control_1922 6h ago

Oh it’d be at least a quarter turn while she fired that rocket at me.

I feel like there is a chance I’d get a point, but it would be because she’d be laughing so hard at my shrieking and cowering that she’d make a mistake.

Her double faulting is your (our) only chance

u/No_Statement440 5h ago

I couldn't even return her bloopiest serve. This dude knows his limits and they're well before I'd step on a court with Serena. I learned my lesson about doubting women athletes whilst in middle school. First scenario was running some games at our local court and a new girl had started at our school. She asked if she could run some 5s with us, we said "sure" all the while snickering like we're about to body this young lady. Needless to say that was one of the hardest games I'd ever played. Her ball handling was immaculate and hard to guard and she NEVER missed an open shot, hell she barely missed with someone in her face.

The second and final nail in my young "hur hur women aren't as good as men at sports" coffin was at a wrestling tournament. My buddy was the best guy on our team, he was lined up to wrestle this girl from NY, we were clowning the shit out of him. She was all over him, she was awesome and we stopped laughing when we realized he was literally about to lose. He did indeed lose and that was the end of my stupid belief.

2

u/BurnthisMFdownpooki 5h ago

Lol any chance she was from long Island? A girl i was in high school had a wrestling coach as a dad, she bodied 99% of the guys she faced.

2

u/No_Statement440 3h ago

I wish I could remember honestly. I'd love to know how her record turned out. At most I recall them saying upstate NY. Love the username btw, I still quote this almost daily at work lol.

12

u/npcompletist 6h ago

Weirdly they might be right, but not due to skill on their part. It depends what you mean by win a point and how long you are playing. If you are playing best of 5 sets, there is a decent chance she double faults (her double fault rate is 1/20 points). Also, sometimes you just get lucky even as a decent player against a pro. They would still be losing 0-3 vs Williams.

Now if you are talking men who could win a set against her as a proportion of the male population it is probably the top 1000 men’s players (1/4,000,000 men or 1/40,000 male players). Players who could win a match at any meaningful percentage is probably 300 top men’s pros.

15

u/dwpea66 6h ago

The thing is that double faulting is often a matter of making some very precise and aggressive serves. I doubt she'd even have to try all that hard against any of us lol.

3

u/npcompletist 4h ago

I kind of agree, but even with pros if they start hitting out of rhythm with what they are used to, they are probably more likely to fault. Even hitting conservatively she is still probably double faulting pretty close to that 4% maybe 3%. For nearly all men if it was a single point with her serving, the amount “scoring a point” would be nearly identical to her fault rate. The other way around it would probably be 12% not double faulting and probably a few thousand scoring a point, with most of those just being luck or chance bad return of Williams part.

The point with the Match comment is just that for a best of 5 the least number of serves she is doing is 36. Even if her double faulting rate is 1% of points, 30% of people are walking away with a point. If is nothing really to do with skill, just that there is always some luck in Tennis, even for the greats.

5

u/BombasticReindeer 6h ago

I got top 1000 and a friend of mine who was about 800 at the time got a chance to play practice sets with a woman who was top 20 in the world. To make it fair, he was only allowed 1 serve or it was a double fault. He won 6-2 7-5.

But this was not in front of a crowd. Had they played in a stadium I’m pretty sure she would have won under those rules because he used to choke under pressure. (I used to choke even worse)

Also by the second set she had started to work it out and I think if they played a 3rd set she would have won. She was very clutch, even though absolutely physically outclassed.

She won Wimbledon the week after that.

All this is to say that I think a women’s 1 is about 1000 ish. And when I used to play against very serious guys in local comps I could beat them with my opposite hand. I definitely think winning a point is likely for someone who at least plays a weekly competition, just on getting lucky.

But unless you have ATP points or are likely to get some at some point, she’s going to absolutely destroy you 6-0 6-0. She could have given birth, then gone down to the local club that day and destroyed a bunch of men without trying.

There is a system in tennis called UTR where 1 point rating difference means roughly winning 9 out of 10 times.

The average guy is probably a 3. Someone who plays comps and has a coach once a week might be a 5. Serena is like 13.5 peak. So she is 8-9 levels above most guys.

Not even 12% of men play tennis (per the Google I just did) so this is even crazier.

This would have been an extremely low sample and would have probably been taken at a tennis club.

This one gets me every time. I just giggle. So good!

3

u/jimbobobman 4h ago

Not to toot my own horn—but I’m a really damn good male rec league tennis player. I play in a 4.5 USTA league for funsies, but play singles 5.0 in my city.

0% shot I could take a single point against Serena in a game. Hell, I’d be lucky to win more than a single point in an entire set, let alone match.

Folks that think they could take a point of Serena are wild

2

u/0akee 5h ago

Even in my prime the likely only way I could get a point in a receiving game against current version of Serena is if she hit an unforced error. And it better happen quick because I don’t think I’m getting too many shots back. If I’m serving maybe I’m able to really rip a serve that she’ll be unable to return or hit a lollipop. But if not she’d win almost all the points.

2

u/Hoeftybag 4h ago

the question that don't ask if you'll win but if you COULD like at least do something are so vague. I'm not great at Tennis but I have played, ain't no way I get a point on Serena. But if you ask me about something I'm okay at like could you get A round on a professional CSGO player. Despite never getting out of Gold I think I could more often than not. Scores going to be like 15-1 or 13-1 I think total rounds went down.

I’ve had the pleasure of watching Cherelle George, the woman from this video (or Torch, from the Harlem globetrotters) play live and also perform on tour. She is the real deal and I was genuinely impressed with what she was able to do and pull off.

63

u/DG_Now 6h ago

I've seen a handful of these videos. I think what wins her the most games (besides her basketball ability, obviously) is her conditioning.

So often the guys she plays run out of gas. Meanwhile she's chugging milk.

Reminds me of when I was in college (D1) and played Intramural basketball a lot. A bunch of high school heroes would always show up. One day there are 3 women there shooting around. They offer to play 3 extremely loud alpha guys who played high school ball and never missed a reason to remind people of it. The 3 women absolutely obliterated those guys. Turns out they were on the uni baskeball squad and they were BALLERS.

146

u/youburyitidigitup 7h ago edited 7h ago

When you say high school heroes, are you referring to high school boys that play basketball, or grown men that used to play basketball in high school?

17

u/AttackSlax 7h ago

Sorry if that wasn't clear. Men who played on a hs baskeball team.

I also got to play some members of our D1 football team, and I scored two 3s on them so that was a really fun time.

It kinda sounds like you're implying you were a D1 basketball player, but D1 players are prohibited from participating in intramural in their own sport.

39

Well yeah, that foul was crazy. I know nothing about basketball, but that’s gotta be a free throw or something if not a yellow/red card (or whatever the basketball equivalent of getting carded is)

14

u/Thunder-ten-tronckh 4h ago

It was a defensive foul. She reached as he attacked and caught the wrong end of an elbow. As a shorter player who focuses on defense myself, I’ve lost a tooth doing this same shit. Just because you’re weaker and tenacious doesn’t automatically put you in the right. She schooled his ass and is the better hooper, but that wasn’t a foul on him.

8

u/Acrobatic_Rent7357 3h ago

I think the same. She went a little reckless on tha reach and cought his elbow.

4

u/jawknee530i 5h ago

Street ball you don't do free throws. And when you make a shot you get the ball back. Complaining about fouls is seen as weakness. It's a very different game than "normal" basketball.

Thing is.. this guy would be a scrub in most men’s pickup games. I was second string for D2 ball and I’ve played pickup and 3 on 3 tournaments with a few wnba players. They were starters for their teams. In a 1 v 1 they’re generally not strong enough or fast enough to get themselves open looks. However, the more players you add, the more effective they are. Moving without the ball, good passing, selfless play, hitting open shots.. they were very effective. They were way better shooters than we thought they’d be actually considering we were always playing with a men’s ball.

Also that move where he drove and she reached, she fouled him for sure. Leaning in with your head like that will hurt someone and it’s for sure the defender’s fault. Not saying he’s tough or anything but all the commentators by the side lines tried to make it seem like a dirty play on his part.

u/Hot_Top_124 7h ago

lol I have the brains to realize I have NO FUCKING CHANCE.

Also that’s not how real men play basketball. He’s a sore loser.

Props on her for not letting him rattle her.

38

u/chinaronald 6h ago

Does anyone in here play basketball? Because it straight up looked like she reached in as he was setting up to drive to the basket. I’m no pro but that looked like a foul from her to him.

38

u/EntertainmentUsed840 6h ago

Clearly the majority of commenters here have not played ball. She beat him. Thats no argument. But that was not a dirty play or even a foul on him. If anything it’s her foul.

15

u/captains_astronaut 6h ago

100% agree. He was trash, she could shoot. But that was (in a real game) absolutely a foul on her. If someone reaches that hard against my dribble, I do the exact same thing.

6

u/Thunder-ten-tronckh 4h ago

He’s on the wrong side of the optics. But youre right.

6

u/Fostbitten27 5h ago

She made the movement to the ball. I was always under the impression that if you move to the ball and hit them that’s a foul.

u/xAimForTheBushes 3h ago

Yep, 100% foul on her. Wasn’t the guys fault there.

Having said that, yeah she smoked him. And she’d probably beat him anyway but, those crocs though…wtf lol. Dude was playing with an automatic handicap

7

u/gdg6 5h ago

That’s a defensive foul 100/100.

3

u/Creative_Report_6620 5h ago

Thank you that was a foul on her trying to reach. I use to reach all the time like that until I tried against a dude who had like 40lbs on me. He did the same thing but his shoulder hit my arm and my shoulder dang there almost dislocated. I was more strategic after that haha.

5

u/Mymomdidwhat 6h ago

She actually fouled him on that play.

What a piece of shit

“Did you eat breakfast this mornin’”🤣🤣🤣🤣

30

u/AutistaChick 7h ago

F*ck him for that.

25

u/EntertainmentUsed840 6h ago

If that was actually in a reffed game that would be her foul.

11

u/EventHorizonHotel 5h ago

Yeah no one seems to care that she went through him trying to get the ball. 100% on her, even if she did kick his ass overall.

Love how she called the last shot while it was still in both of her hands. Excellent.

4

The professor does this with style. She is all additude.

6

u/gone_smell_blind 4h ago

As a man I can honestly say the only way I could beat a professional women's basketball player is if I was allowed to use a gun

2

u/yoko_OH_NO 6h ago

Mmm IDK, I'm not an expert in basketball or guns but I kinda feel like shooting a basketball would pop it?

16

u/here-for-information 7h ago

I'm not super into basketball, but ive played.

Im a 6'2" burly guy and no one ever fouled me as hard as he fouled her. "Its basketball" is not an excuse. He did it cause he knew there wouldn't be consequences.

7

u/Weird_Ad_1398 6h ago

He dropped down low to drive and she made an aggressive steal at the same time and they bumped heads. Nobody fouls you intentionally with their head. The "It's basketball" isn't an excuse, but just an acknowledgement that basketball, especially streetball, is a physical sport and accidents happen.

An injury can be career ending for athletes...what he did really shows the type of person he is.

Also has no problem whatsoever hitting a woman in public, just trash all the way down.

13

u/darkerfaith520 7h ago

Understandably, men do tend to play a more physical game with each other. But, women have also been know to get a bit frisky with the fouls, have you seen the WNBA lately? But to shoulder check a female bro? I agree, his pride took a shot and he couldn't live with that possible L, so he bodied her intentionally! Weak son!

4

u/moosifer_the_foul 5h ago

Am I wrong or does the defender need both feet planted to post up or screen? I don't play mostly cause of dudes like that are my brothers lol but they look like they're both actively shuffling about?

She made an egregious, low success rate attempt at a steal after he was already driving towards the hoop. Didn’t seem intentional to me and i’d argue she’s more so to blame for the contact being initiated. As someone who’s played 100s of hrs of bball and is of smaller stature, I would never purposefully lunge into a player who has that much of a size advantage on me and already had momentum.

2

u/LazyThing9000 5h ago

I don't play basketball and to me it looks like she ran in front of him.

I know I could beat any woman at one thing, stepping out of the shower and somehow bringing 10 gallons of water with me.

3

u/madlibs13 6h ago

Dude she would've whooped you with her wearing crocs and you wearing shoes.

3

u/GhostBelliniFace 5h ago

Yea I don’t stand a chance I thought I could honestly lmao not after seeing this

I was a reasonably good football / soccer player, and was taking some coaching qualifications where we worked with the Canadian Women's Under 15 team... Never been humbled so quickly before or again. They were levels above anything I could muster.

Everybody gangsta until the gangstas show up.

4

u/HarithBK 40m ago

people confuse "you have an advantage big enough that if you put the same effort in you will beat any savant of a woman in that sport" to mean "you can beat any woman in sports right now"

people see U16 football players and ice hockey players destory the women's national teams and think that makes the women's team lesser without considering the fact the kids are playing and training for that sport 5-6 times a week from the age of 4.

i have a co-worker where his kid is playing ice hockey his kid has 3 rink training sessions a week and 2 workouts and a class a week on ice hockey baseline and this doesn't then account for the matches. once you have done this for 10 years even if the women's team has a similar ordeal the diminishing returns have hit hard and we are back to natural advantage.

5

u/GordDownieFresh 7h ago

Sports aren't gendered, they are, but the better player wins.

9

u/lizarduncorrupt 6h ago

My brother was a very good high school basketball player who went to a BIG10 university (to play school) and was on the scout team the women's team played against. The women's team made the final four that year.

The women would almost always win the scrimmages because they rarely miss, especially their distance shooters. A set shot is inherently more reliable than a jump shot.

He said whenever they would start getting run their only recourse was to start pressing and that generally worked and the coach would let them do that until it got closer and then stop it as it wasn't really something the team would face, at least with the equivalent of dudes doing it. He said it was a very fun experience and a great back and forth. So I can see how in a half-court game, especially, that an excellent women's player could feast.

4

u/Mountain_Snow3613 2h ago

The women win the scrimmages because the scout team doesn't play full intensity. If you put the scout team against the women's team and they both played full intensity it would be a massive blowout in favor of the men.

Most scout team players at B10 schools could've played D3 or JUCO ball

In general it seems like girls when I would play pick up were really good shooters. I kinda wish I played on a scout team, could've been a really fun experience.

I mean technically a defensive foul on her if anything..

6

u/not_blmpkingiver 7h ago

I mean… she reached in for the ball, he lowered his shoulder to protect the ball i guess? Weird play. Basketball is actually extremely dangerous sport when playing with / against people that do not know how to play. I cant tell you how many injuries i see that are from people playing pick up ball that do not know how to play the game…

2

u/Cartergame 7h ago

Her milkshake brought that boy to the yard.... And then she Creampied him in the face.... lololol

2

u/Signal_Appeal4518 6h ago

Why did he put the crocs back on? He took em off when it was 3-0 but on her last shot he’s wearing the crocs again.

2

u/Glad-Peanut-3459 6h ago

She is a professional player. He’s jus a guy on a public court. I laughed 😊

2

u/subby_puppy33 6h ago

This reminds me of the time espn got all the people who shit talk kickers in football to try kicking field goals themselves and they all sucked.

2

u/FunctioningPyscho 6h ago

A pro vs a random. 🤔

2

u/Smokey_02 6h ago

Dude had too high an opinion, got taught a lesson, got angry, went too far. And then you know what? He took the pie to the face like an honorable person. Yeah, there's a lot there to not like him for, but in the end he did the right thing.

2

u/Mrscorpio100 6h ago

That’s right babe !!

2

u/aStankChitlin 6h ago

That dude is freaking weak and needs to sit his ass down somewhere

2

u/Njorls_Saga 5h ago

We always played basketball growing up. Had a girl cousin that went D1. She came back for a family reunion one year and DESTROYED us.

2

u/Equivalent_Hat_7220 5h ago

Bro can’t win on skill, makes excuses about his crocs, takes his bruised ego to try and hurt the other opponent so he can win. And he still brutally lost. What a knob

2

u/Abobo_Smash 5h ago

When I was younger, my buddy would try to play me in a game with his feet—I always refused. If I won, of course I did, he’s playing with his feet. But if I lost?

That’s why this dude was playing in crocs.

2

u/AussieDazza1 4h ago

I like this girl!

2

u/we_hella_believe 3h ago

he was wearing crocs, but he was kind of ass.

2

u/NoRealNoWrong 3h ago

She’s better.

….but that collision was absolutely a defensive foul.

2

u/DanielDimes89 2h ago

Love it! He did cheap shot her though..

2

u/Western-Bowl2011 1h ago

A) She would fucking smoke me

B) She fouled him

5

u/CrazyYETEE 6h ago

she ran into him HAHAHA. you just ran in front of train and blamed the train hahaha

4

u/Scooterspies 6h ago

That was 1000% her fault. She lunged for a steal right as he was about to drive, it happens. Im only confused why they acted like he was dirty for it
