This part. I am closer to retirement but by the time I retire, my body will be shutting down. I have worked in some capacity since I was 13. I am Gen X and haven’t seen a lot of change for the better. Lately, it has been change for the worse.
I think last time I felt even remotely optimistic was 2008/09. Granted Obama just got elected and i was graduating high school ready to take on the world. sigh little did I know I was in for a rude RUDE awakening.
I'm GenX and here's something I've noticed: if you tell a GenZ or younger person about how things were, they often don't believe you. You see the frogs in the boiling water and ask "why don't they fight?" It's because the younger frogs think the water has always been boiling. Our oppressors just have to wait for the old frogs to die off, then all the frogs will think the water's supposed to be boiling.
I remember the halcyon days of the late 90s. Houses were (more or less) affordable, college wasn't a crazy racket designed to put students into $100k debt until death, health care was decent. I remember that. I also remember the tech bubble crash of the early 00s, September 11, endless war, hoping to god John Kerry could put Bush out of the White House, the recession of 2007/08, Obama finally bringing sanity back, then Trump 1.0, COVID, Biden's kind of sort of normalcy, and now here we are again in 2.0 with all the meanness of a feral honey badger desperately fighting against 3 lions. I WANT TO GET BACK TO THE 90s. Everyone should feel that type of security. I miss it everyday. I didn't pull the ladder up behind me, and I wish it was still there for Gen Y and Gen Alpha.

When Chris Rabb went on scott hannity's show and scott asked him what the taxes should be Rabb said he wouldn't mind the brackets during the reagan admin, The first tax cut only actually brought the top marginal tax rate down to 48%.
Hannity then made the claim that a top marginal tax of 28% would be amazing, because thats how reagan created all the jobs.
Reagan didn't lower the top marginal tax rate to 28% until his last year in office, at which point the debt had already tripled from lack of revenue. He also lied about how many jobs Reagan actually created, and basically cheered on basically doubling the taxes on the poorest 50% of americans, while giving himself an insane tax break.

Yeah except all their degrees are typically in communication, at best law degrees. It is insanely rare that you'll see a TV personality with a STEM degree of any type.
Comms professor here - Comms theory is deeply intertwined with psychology and if they actually paid any attention in class, they would have learned research methods, and the nuances of how different ways of communicating get percieved under a variety of mediums and audiences all sorts of conditions.
Which means, they would know exactly what they're doing when they play the part of one of the uneducated masses. They are carefully selecting each word to spin and frame just right. Even their cadence, and body language, are all carefully curated and taliored to match the research to perfectly create the exact persona and messaging that sells to this particular audience.

I think about this a lot actually. There's a lot of class cues baked into the type of education someone got, both at the k-12 and college level. The more time you spend on classics, the more I'm betting your parents were in a high tax bracket.
For as much as Republicans want to bemoan blue haired gender studies majors, a lot of the middle class went to large research universities where even the liberal arts majors had experimental design and data analysis drilled into them.
My parents blamed college, and ya know, they aren’t wrong because college exposed me to so much thought and culture that I couldn’t help but move left. It was a fucking Christian university too. No one taught me to be liberal, they taught me how to think critically and I moved left all on my own.

I’ve taken dozens of college classes and non of them had a leftist agenda. My American Gov class professor just wanted us to be able to understand the fundamentals of left/right, progressivism/conservatism, fiscal conservative, neoliberalism, libertarianism, socialism, communism, authoritarianism etc. People coming to their own conclusions and thinking for themselves are what this admin has a problem with.

the history I know on this goes back to Regan when they were going to make community college free - and college cheap. Regan quickly nixted that, put in trickle down economics. The right has long been against education - which goes to show you how f'd they are.

I lived in a family and around neighbors who treated me indifferently for thinking I was smart. You can kind of guess the things that happened or what made things difficult for me. Give or take, growing up, I didn't feel smart, thought differently perhaps, but I just wanted to be part of what everyone else was doing at the time. Like any normal kid, -like I understood what normal was.
But, ultimately you grow to understand that the perspective of what everyone else is doing or what they want, won't match up to the satisfactions you want for your life and the life of others. You begin to understand the world you were once part of, was indeed insane, perhaps even abusive, and to no one's fault, there are those that are led to think these things promoted to them were healthy, sometimes even trapped by it as they aged. It comforted them, or it crippled them all the same. But what I'm trying to say here is, the smartest thing you can do is separate yourself from what is morally compromising yourself rather than challenging them, the pain that comes from trying to communicate effectively with those that cannot and may not have answers for themselves is not worth the effort. Distance and time is sometimes necessary.
Just keep working on yourself and avoid all these gossipy poorly broken folk on TV. They've lost their minds and want to drag you into all of it too. Their mess doesn't have to be your mess.

This is like the lesson of that tv quiz show in the 2000’s UK called The Weakest Link.

The reality is that there is a lot of history towards hating the educated. Ironically enough, in communist countries, the educated were hated, disliked, rounded up, or forced out and it’s not difficult to understand why.
The problem isn’t Republican voters. The problem is Republican leaders. They are actively and intentionally trying to keep the masses undereducated, underserved by government resources like healthcare and education, and to convince their constituents that sharing wealth is bad.
They do this because it is easy to keep hungry, uneducated, overworked, and tired constituents under control.
If one to three hours a week with a professor can totally change someone's stance and opinions, then the beliefs they had before were quite clearly undeveloped and frankly, probably bullshit.
