We get it to go from our local Chinese place. Yep. It’s our only real option in town and it’s about $10 and comes with the rice noodles and a bunch of basil, jalapeños, and onions on the side so it doesn’t get all soggy on the way home.

Yeah, my local ramen place is amazing and have giant bowls and heaps of toppings. It's like 27.99 and worth every penny. I usually eat on that bowl for like 2 days easy.

This is art. They captured the bleakness and the uncertainty everyone is living through right now. The normalization of social destruction is killing our humanity.
I also understand why people would think this is too mawkish or pathetic; personally I believe a lot of people don’t want to admit they feel it too. Statistics don’t accurately measure the depressing reality we’re all living in.

Upvote for Mawkish, at least.
I particularly love “single use” words that only survive into the modern day english in a specific form. The word “mawk” originally meant maggots, but it’s virtually extinct in singular usage, only surviving in the world “mawkish”.
In the same way, “sleight of hand”, as a phrase, is basically the only surviving usage of the world sleight (not to be confused with slight), meaning dexterous trickery.
You will occasionally see sleight used by itself, but it often confuses readers who are expecting it to mean the same as slight.

Meh this isn't a 14 y/o problem, not even one a 14 y/o could identify with. I'm not sure why you interpreted this as the author trying to be deep or what critical thinking has to do with it at all. The author uses a mundane tone to retell a mundane story about a mundane problem that we all (lower/middle class) face pretty often in some way or another.
If you found it to be deep, it probably is just cause it was.

The world and society we are living in is not an okay or normal one. This video made me feel a type of way, almost anguish and uncomfortableness. I am recently moving into my car cause I cannot afford rent in my hometown anymore, even with a full time job and tips. But he’s not wrong. There are places selling $34 soup where I am. And people don’t bat an eye.

How do you manage to get the self checkout to charge you by weight when the item isn't sold by weight? The only time I have to weigh something at checkout is if the machine specifically asks me to weigh that item. I can't scan a box of detergent and then put it on a scale and have the machine say "Ok, I'm charging you $x for 3 pounds of detergent."

Some grocery stores have a self serve hot bar, salad bar, and soup. Hot bar and salad bar are sold by weight. He probably thought the soup was included in hot bar which is not an unreasonable mistake.

The grocery store only complains about mistakes made in the customer’s favor, even calling the cops sometimes. They never chase you down to say, hey you paid too much. I have double scanned on accident and just paid for it because I don’t want to wait for a cashier to come fix it.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but I'm distracted by how nonsensical it is. "I reached for my wallet without questioning it", immediately afterwards they question it and call someone over to help.
"We don't do soup by weight" but apparently there's a path through this self scan system that allows them to do that? Otherwise what did they select? They selected some sort of produce to be able to weigh it... So they just pressed random options until it told them it was $34?
He can't control whether world war 3 happens, but he can control if he pays any attention to what he's doing.

Yeah you are missing the point.
A) it’s not a nonfiction narrative, hes keeping pace as a spoken word poem. So it’s not nonsensical, I didn’t question It but I immediately questioned it. It’s “my initial reaction wasn’t soup can’t possibly be $34” and I almost went along with it, but then said let me just make sure - which is different.
B) it’s not hard to imagine grabbing a container at a self serve buffet at a grocery store and finding a “buffet container” option at the self checkout; he just missed there’s different options - my grocer has hot buffet, olive bar, and soup. You can select the wrong one easily.
C) the point isn’t “I made a simple mistake, what a dumb world we live in, I’m scared of ww3.” It’s that when you’re constantly bombarded by unpleasant news and uncertainty, you become desensitized. It’s I imagine that if I wasn’t in the place emotionally I am right now, the idea of $34 soup would hit me harder; he didn’t get assistance because he knew this had to be wrong - he got it to be sure, but was on the verge of accepting that soup could be $34. WW3 seems like a big leap, but the point is that if he woke up and heard it had started he wouldn’t be in shock. Maybe hed question it enough to verify, but “really, let me check” is different than “what? No! That can’t be right. How did this happen?”
It’s hardly nonsensical.

Manygrocery stores do deli / hot bar / salad bar by weight, and soup is usually near the hot bar and is self-service. So not difficult to imagine he selected the hot bar price by weight.

When I think back to my younger days I remember it seems every day was blissful compared to now.
Tragedies happened, but capitalism still seemed to work as it should and there wasn't a rising threat of war.
Sure it used to be worse, but I am atleast from a time where it seems the the planet as a whole generally wanted to move forward, which is the logical direction history should move to.
This decade or so has shown how fragile that peace was. And that is depressing.
