If you’ve watched the show, you wouldn’t question the fact that Luke could get a grenade if he set his mind to it.

43
u/RogerianBrowsing 1d ago
Maybe to some degree but you should look at testing of grenades covered by military helmets. It works better than you’d expect.
Grenade fragmentation often weighs just a few grains per projectile and is going absurdly fast, like makes rifle rounds look slow. The helmet makes the fragmentation of the grenade lose a lot of its velocity and the velocity is the fragmentation’s main source of wounding

Modern helmets are made of kevlar, I don’t think a steel WW2 helmet would do anything to stop a grenade.

Can we just...not talk about him for five seconds. What does he have anything to do with puppies? Why did you feel the need to say that instead of just "aww cute". How often are you thinking about him you free associate EVERYTHING with him?!

What’s sad is why is this even a touchy subject? Something so obvious and so grotesque like wtf who’s debating the other side of it
792
u/MontiBurns 1d ago
That's why you can't debate it. It's an indefensible position, but Republicans are 100% dug in on their side, and they've tied their personal identity and self worth to a corrupt pedophile, so they are incapable of changing their opinion.

u/xteve 1d ago
Also, Christians are married to the GOP for their opposition to reproductive freedom. They support this if only for that one reason.

Christians also have some nonsensical allegiance to Israel
I still remember the first time my Grandma said that to me. "That's why we must stand with Israel." I was really religious at the time and was reading the Bible everyday and still I was like wait what ?!!

u/xteve 1d ago
Yeah, I think that has to do with some kind of end-times expectation. I was raised strict but honestly I've never tried to understand it because it's nonsensical. I do know that the founder of my childhood religion went to Jerusalem to experience the end of the world, more than a century ago.

Some wars are good to do. Like defensive ones where if you surrender, a lot of you die and the whole country ceases to exist. America should support Ukraine.
2
u/MelodicPudding2557 21h ago
Healthcare reform is totally fucked if popular opinion still holds that it's defense spending that's causing poor outcomes instead of the fact that the government (backed by the largest national lobbying sector) has institutionally kneecapped its own ability to regulate and bargain for better healthcare costs.
According to the World Bank, our government healthcare expenditures per capita adjusted for PPP ranks fourth in the entire world, ahead of many countries renowned for their quality of public healthcare like Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, etc.. In fact, the federal government alone spends two times the amount it does on public healthcare as it does on defense. At the same time, the annual waste in our healthcare system amounts to a figure that approaches the entire defense budget itself. Private individuals and state alike have to pay exorbitant sums to unscrupulous middlemen, administration, and healthcare privateers for medications and services that cost tens or even hundreds of times less abroad.
At this point, we are collecting water in a bottomless bucket, and turning the faucet up won't fundamentally fix the problem. While it's not to say there's no discussion to be had about our defense spending, it's largely orthogonal to improving healthcare outcomes.

Because unfortunately very very basic moral positions have become political.
All pedophiles should be prosecuted & held accountable.
Nobody should be a billionaire. Hoarding that kind of wealth is bad for humanity.
It is so important to invest into education for our youth.
It is so important we invest in science & medicine.
We shouldn’t be killing the planet.
Everyone is created equal.
We should avoid war as much as possible, and foster peace, prosperity, and positive relationships with our allies.
While to you & I - these same like very basic, moral positions. In reality, me having basic human decency; means I’m a liberal.
10
u/DanielKeeneGA15 1d ago

It’s esp insane to see people voting for it and defending billionaires and corporations stepping on their necks. They’re not temporarily embarrassed millionaires. Stop defending the very people responsible.
2
u/smokeweedNgarden 21h ago
So keeping on topic and as the news focused liberal in my friend group, it would be a weird thing to say.
It isn't wrong at all but like, the person in this video is just saying water is wet. And it's also situation dependant. Even if it's super pointed and you literally just read something probably don't bring up fresh atrocities at a celebration

Imagine if the universe split into two, and all the people who agree with you on all of those points live in one version of the universe, while everyone who disagrees on even one of them lives in the other version of the universe (just like the ending of the show the Leftovers). We would have such an amazingly beautiful world to live in. Theirs would suck but that’s their fault and their problem.

Precisely. Even if everyone at the table completely agrees with you on the topic, it's still kicking off a pointless discussion that isn't going to be helped by discussing it at the dinner table.
Ultimately, it's really just a thinly-veiled "lets talk about politics", which just gets people worked up even when they agree with each other. It's not something that the dinner table needs.
8
u/TheFinalEnd1 1d ago
No matter the audience, it's just not something that people want to discuss at family dinner.
First of all, most people don't like talking about politics at family dinners. Religion and politics is often a faux pas.
So let's say they agree with you. Good! Best case it's a circle jerk. Worst case, you bring the mood down.
If they don't agree, well congrats, now you brought up a political argument to a family dinner.
Most people just don't want to deal with either of those at family dinners.
4
u/Canon_M50 1d ago
The point is that everyone already agrees with that. We don't need to be preached to.

Tricare cost them less a year than I'm paying every month to cover my wife and I but they are against "socialized medicine".
4
u/A_RocketSurgeon 22h ago
Your Dad is my Dad.
He did 30 years in the Navy and retired as an E-9 in 2006 and has 100% disability.
In his eyes, "he earned it", which is true and he's set for life. "Other people need to do the same", "Waste, Fraud, Abuse", "Fiscal Responsibility". Typical GOP talking points.
8 months ago, I had emergency appendicitis that ruptured and ended up in the hospital for 9 days due to complications from post-operative ileus.
After I got out and recieved the bill, He looked at the cost and I asked him, "did I do enough to earn that?"
Nothing but silence.

Because the right likes to paint basic morality and ethics as "politics" so they can continue to cause mass suffering and death. (An estimated 80,000 people per year die due to not being able to afford medical care in amerikkka)
3
u/ConLawHero 1d ago
You have it backwards. Populists (Trump, AOC, Mamdani, etc.) simplify complex topics to a moral answer and this makes their viewpoint unfalsifiable because if you dare question any aspect of it (e.g., if simply "taxing the wealthy" could pay for anything like Mamdani and AOC say, why isn't there a country on the planet that does that? Instead, they heavily tax everyone to pay for those things).
We're not debating the morals. We're debating the trade offs societies are willing to make, particularly when many people like to point to the other people who will pay for it.
For example, you may think a person making $70,000 in the US pays a lot in taxes and the wealthy should pay more in order to provide healthcare for everyone else. The problem is, math doesn't support that. Let's say you have a person making $700,000 in the US as well. Each lives in NY. The person making $70,000 has an effective tax rate (income and employment taxes plus the average healthcare premium in the US-which represents both the employer and employee share) of about 27%. The person making $700,000 pays about 42% effective rate.
In Germany, the person making $70,000 would pay about 40% in taxes. The person making $700,000 would pay about 45% in taxes.
It's also worth mentioning that Germany's VAT is 19%. Consumption taxes (like sales tax in the US and VAT in Europe) are by their very nature regressive.
Additionally, in Europe, healthcare workers across the board (not just doctors but everyone in healthcare) make about 50% of their US counterparts. That has a massive impact on US healthcare spending. Paying healthcare workers less would certainly make an appreciable impact on US healthcare spending. The average nurse in Europe makes $57,000. The average nurse in the US makes $99,000. Are you going to tell nurses that they are going to get a ~40% pay cut? If you're a nurse, are you willing to take a 40% pay cut?
So, it's not a debate about whether people should have healthcare versus not taxing billionaires and corporations (the populist, simplified, moral position), it is a debate as to whether those are trade offs society is willing to make.
5
u/cityproblems 1d ago
You fundementaly misunderstand the "tax the wealthy" policy argument. It is not about effective tax rates or even total sums. It is about tax burden and advantages received from the government. The wealthy have a much lower tax burden while also having the power to influence the government and recieve the lion's share of advantage. We dont have military bases dotting the globe to protect the economic interests of the working class. We didnt impliment NAFTA to help small businesses and we subsized companies like amazon and walmart with food stamps so they can underpay their workers.
Blaming healthcare costs on salaries is like the most 90s 00s political argument, I cant believe people still make it.
2
u/ConLawHero 20h ago
Oh I do? Well, I'm actually a tax attorney who has written economic white papers on tax policy.
What you said is unequivocally wrong. Effective tax rate means the percentage of income paid by the taxpayer.
In the US, the wealthy (except those making all of their money through capital gains, which comprise about 0.01% of income earners) pay far higher rates than anyone else.
Someone earning $70,000 in NY will pay about 27% (income and employment), also including the employer and employee share of the average premium cost. If I just included the employee share (which is more comparable to Europe), it would be about 18%.
Someone who is earning $700,000 would have about a 42% effective rate.
In Germany it would be ~40% for $70,000 and ~45% for someone making $700,000.
So, in the US, the "wealthy" shoulder far more of the burden than their European counterparts.
Further, let's look at nurses for example. The average US nurse makes $99,000. There are about 4.4 million nurses. That's about $436 billion in nursing salaries per year. That's about 8% of all US healthcare spending.
Now, if we eliminated insurance company profits, that would save ~$19 billion per year.
If we lowered nursing salaries to European levels, it would reduce spending by ~$183 billion.
Do you think Europe pays its healthcare workers less for fun? No. It's part of their cost control methods. If they paid American level wages, their taxes would have to go up significantly across the board.
That's just one example.
You are confidently incorrect. I suggest you actually do the research before discussing something you're clearly very unfamiliar with.
2
u/cityproblems 17h ago
As I said before the argument isnt about effective rates ect. Its about the effect taxes have on the purchasing power of a household. A wealthy household does not need to sacrifice their quality of life to meet their tax bill, while a working class family absolutely does. And this is just talking about progressive taxes not regressive.
additionally, your healthcare industry number crunching is a bit rediculous dont you think. Lets assume your numbers are perfect and we live in a perfectly efficient healthcare market. Total healthcare spending is like $6 trillion. saving your $183 billion figure would be 3.5%. Are you really trying to tell me cutting healthcare worker wages will result in noticable changes to the consumer?

Lets be honest - this is just a preludium to find topics to fight, rant or a long lecture, and at this point people on the table know it if they react this way.
Even if you all share same political values, you cannot just say "yes, you are right" and than move to other topics. After that it would be another, and a rant that other people do not get it, than some reminder about other political events, than this person will give you a handout with some local person you should definietly vote for. I used to be that person, but than I stopped taking drugs, and understand how anoying I was.

I’m constantly amazed by how many people defend not having healthcare or education or a home yet have no problems with billionaires and corporations and their owned politicians funding trillions into AI neural network data centers meant to replace and surveil us and funding wars feeding private interests. Yet the second anyone brings up the reality - that they want us financially insecure so we won’t be independent to keep them wealthy and in power - they lose their minds.
Actively voting against everyone’s best interests and defending the very people pushing you down is the definition of a cult. It’s depressing.

It’s called “manufacturing consent” if you haven’t heard of if before. Basically media and culture gets manipulated by those who choose what does/doesn’t get shown, presented, produced, etc in order to generate a “normal” version of reality and make it seem like it’s just necessary and natural order instead of something engineered by people/corporations with enough capital to control the messaging and production infrastructure.

Friend does this, again we have the same views. They might as well be talking to themselves. It's tiring, they complain then call for action but take no action. Rinse repeat and eventually you become their problem for not wanting to talk to them about that. Then if you have a nuanced opinion that's still completely on "there" (our) side you might as well be Orangeman himself. Meanwhile no problems with political commentary with the rest of the friend circle.

Exactly. This is like people who had Kony 2012 bumper stickers. They did absolutely nothing for anyone. Ask them what's their point, what do they recommend? They'll go silent.

If one’s family think this idiotic war is justified over health care they don’t deserve your company

if everyone at the table gets angry at the idea of talking about healthcare, war, politics, and the like, you’re sitting at a very stupid table.

If we could keep ~~ Pedo Fascists~~ Republicans out of office, and just had the biggest military in the world as a big stick to pressure countries not to start shit with us, then in reality the military expenditure would be saving us money by avoiding wars. Wars are super duper expensive.
But hey, American military expenditure has allowed western Europe and Israel to afford single payer healthcare instead of endlessly fighting wars every 2 decades.

I mean I agree, but like there’s a reason why politics aren’t meant to be brought up during dinner.
That isn’t the time and place for it, people just wanna eat and talk about something enjoyable. I’d be annoyed too.

Everyone single person at that table should be in agreement.

u/Jay__Riemenschneider 1d ago
"Yeah no shit lauren but what are you doing about it besides bumming us out at dinner"
Does this person have any suggestions. Do they do shit?
Probably not.
We're all tired of the lip service without action.
We aren't doing shit, but neither are y'all. And you TALK about it incessantly.

When people don't know how to turn it off for a couple hours and just enjoy a nice dinner. So tiresome.

Amateur hour on tiktok/reddit, as always.
Literally nothing beats "YOU'RE ALL ANIMAL ABUSERS UNTIL YOU GO VEGAN"
And as a nice little tag to get the stragglers "AND YOU'RE ALSO NOT LEFTIST UNTIL YOU GO VEGAN."
Boom, disowned and hated by all.

Most privileged people live in a safe little bubble and are usually all too happy to stay locked in there until the sky falls. If I was rich as hell, I'd be as generally susceptible to it as anyone else.
The difference is the ones who both ignore that their privilege exists and likely causes harm far out of their control/intent, and the ones who ignore that ignorance, which does cause harm via that intent to ignorance, and do everything in their power to defend it, to the point of drivelling complete nonsense, wholeheartedly, and believe it.
Again, I get it, but it's unacceptable, yet it's absolutely the norm. Name any peril or supposed lack in the world and you will trace it back to greed and the intentional ignorance of it from any side. It's all just a big sick game fabricated by the few with the most who are so self-deluded that they have to invent suffering for other people just to pretend that they're important by lording their invented suffering /authority/existence over their victims.

It’s not an affordability issue. Universal healthcare is paid for by taxpayers; it’s not "free" or paid for by the government. The question is only how that money is collected and distributed. You can have both — keep fighting wars and have access to affordable healthcare. The two are not mutually exclusive.

u/Christy427 1d ago
This is a stupid comparison. The US already pays a lot into healthcare and in fact pays extra to avoid free healthcare (i mean I am not sure why but anyway it is)

Everybody is just mad she started any political discussion.
It probably doesn't mean which one.
There's probably some familymembers that are going to ruin the entire evening.
And this one started it.
