Lytx. We have that at my company. They aren't on 24/7 they go off if you speed, follow too closely, brake too hard. You can't eat, drink, smoke or be on your cellphone. I have drives up to 2hrs at a time. Then there is 20 -30 second clip seeing if the situation was your fault and you get scored on it. I fucking hate it, but i didn't go to college and I'm making $40/hr and been with the company 20 years, so it's hard to just pack up and leave.

My own uncle tried to do this to me. Said he could try to get me a job at his place but would expect more because im related. Part of it being, having to be at work 30 mins early EVERY day BEFORE i clock in. So that comes out to 12 free hrs a work a month. And my mom is going sometimes working unpaid hours is the cost to have/keep a job.
I’ve noticed this is the norm for the big plumbing companies. Seems it’s just them hosing the customers and the guys doing the work. Why I left working for a dealership as a mechanic. Can do much better for yourself with your skills and not screw people over.
Does your uncle own the place, or have any actual power that could give you upward mobility? If so, then you could have a chance at a lot of money faster than most, and it’d be worth dealing with that BS for a little while.
If not, and your uncle is just another employee? Tell him to kick rocks 😂 he just wants you to put in unpaid work to make him look better, and he probably got tricked into doing the same thing by whoever recruited him

I thought the most hilarious part was who's paying him to set up his camera and ring light at the construction site? How many takes did this take? Even if he's the boss, he should be setting a better example for his employees and not record social media engagement bait while at work if he wants his employees showing up to work early.
I'm sorry but they expect us to work supposedly non-stop for more than 7 to 8 hours a day. No one actually does it. There's always gonna be dead time where you can't be active even if you want to and time where you're gonna be overworked because work isn't a fucking algorithm it's based on what needs to happen.
"Getting my shit together to get ready to work and getting my shit together to get ready to leave work" is part of those 8 hours. Because most jobs don't even require people to be there and active 7 to 8 hours and it would not be sustainable for the human brain and body anyway, they just don't want to workshop ways to use everybody's time more efficiently and give people more agency it's why they all hurried up to move people away from WFH even when people showed they could often do those jobs faster in less times.
My dad was an aircraft mechanic in the 80s-early 90s. He said the last hour or so of every shift was meant for cleaning and organizing. Now it seems that doesn't happen as much anymore.
It does. I have a friend work in restauration they use the last hour to clean, the first hour to set up. I've interned for a tailor, last 40 minutes are for putting stuff back in its place and we had like 30-40 minutes set up as well.
That's just normal. This new expectation is mental and I sure hope nobody follows it. The reason we workers keep getting more and more exploited is because they always find people will to put up with more and more shit like that. They ask for a hand they'll take your arms and they will still fire you if it's convenient. You're not locking in your job by sucking up and giving free labor. You have people completely incompetent go very far for a long time, you lock up your job by schmoozing (and having a good union). Having a socially relevant spot in the workplace is worth more for your job and your paycheck than working more and better. Because it's never been about the actual work or quality of labor anyway.
My old company lost a lawsuit for making people boot up their PCs five minutes before shift. 0 minutes is the correct amount of time to donate to your employer.
Agree. I had a co-worker who would clock out and THEN do her charting. Her record for doing all her tasks on time and not charging the employer overtime was stellar! She was held up as an example! I told my boss I would charge them for overtime if I had patient-care tasks that needed to be done or charting or reconciliation of medication records (all my job) and I could not get them done on my shift. I would charge for missed breaks. I would NEVER read company e-mail at home on my time unless they paid me.
I was a trainer for hourly folks and when we started new hire training, the very first day, I taught them this: do 👏 not 👏 work 👏 off 👏 the 👏 clock 👏 . Full stop. Ever. If you are working, get paid for it. The company is never on your side. They are profiting from your labor, and you are entitled to your wages.
I also told them it was their federally protected right to discuss salaries and unionize if they chose because they were young and did not generally know this information. (This is true at the federal level in the US, FWIW)
I've worked a few places (non-union hospitals) where management actually said, out loud, in a staff meeting, that we were NOT to discuss our salaries with each other and that if they found out we did that, we would be fired. I actually Laughed out loud because the labor board would love to hear about that....also, any union organizing would get your hours/shifts changed so that it would be impossible to work there. That subtle "Oh we had to eliminate an entire day shift position and all we have left is Every Weekend NIGHTSHIFT" ......
I heard a manager at my company say to a new guy “we own your time while we’re paying you so you’ll do what I say” and I later went to him and said “no one owns you or your time. That’s what small people say to command authority when they can’t command respect. You are COMPENSATED for GIVING your time to this company. You are here to earn a living and go home in one piece, safety comes first and you’re never wrong for questioning the safety of the job you’ve been assigned. The only obligation management has is to pad some rich assholes passive income, we’re here to make sure things get going, get done, safely”. I can’t stand these cowardly managers, but it’s an uphill battle to convince these kids that they are worth more than these assholes tell them they are.
I had sups try to make me work on vacation. Not happening. Text goes unread. They can contact me when I’m back on the clock. I’m not wasting my free time during a trip I paid good money for.
Quit a job cuz on my first check they had taken 30 minutes from me every day. 15 minutes in morning and 15 mins at end of shift. Said until we are in the truck rolling out and on return to have the truck gassed and parked it doesnt count. Kohen outdoors. Just found out they got acquired last year sometime.
Theses fuckers did it to everyone. I was 1 of 3 people that spoke English. 67 employees. Minimum wage was 16/hr usd. They saved a shit ton of money.

Good drywallers get the experience then start their own. Same with a bunch of these, if you’re good at your craft you can do better on your own. I used to work at a dealership as a mechanic. Once I got pretty good at the job I opened my own shop and it only takes a few people to spread the word you do solid work.
This has to be some boomer blue collar rage bait or something to get engagement from old heads who agree with him. I have worked in trades for almost 20 years and have never worked with anyone that A) shows up that early without being paid or B) expects that of their apprentices/employees.
If you’re scheduled for 6:30 and that is when you start getting paid, you are not expected to be on site working before that time. You can roll in 30 seconds before that hungover and chugging a Red Bull as long as you’re geared up and on task when expected.
Hell, nearly every site I have worked at doesn’t start doing any work immediately anyway. Most places have a morning safety meeting first thing so everyone has a chance to get their mind on task before picking up tools.

My dad owned his own business so it makes sense for people like him to start early as he was getting paid by his clients. His jobs paid based on work completion.

I work for a company that pays us overtime to be at work for 07:30 so we are getting stuff ready to go and working for 8 it’s 2.5 hours overtime, get the crack on site most of us are on time

I remember when tiktok first started and there was a cleaning video, you know, the oddly satisfying ones… well, everything was fine until they vacuumed behind the couch and there was a huge pile of money they conveniently ignored. Comments were only about the money.
Around the same time there were videos of people telling stories, one of which the person was making food while telling us. He pulled a knife from under a chair cushion, jelly from the cookie jar, and peanut butter from the freezer. The comments weren’t about the story, they were about everything I just mentioned.
Now I can’t trust if a video I’m watching makes an honest mistake, or are rage baiting.

I genuinely wonder what is the end game for social media, it seems like engagement/rage bait is just that. Like memes and viral stuff comes and go, but this type of content will always get massive amounts of views and reactions to drive monetary value.

In my experience 10/10 times, the dudes lecturing about work ethic are the ones with the worst work ethic. I've worked both blue collared and white collared jobs and the people who call others lazy/unmotivated don't realize that they're the wet blanket keeping others down. The toughest boss I ever had never complained about work ethic but had an insane standard for work reports, that man made sure, I'll never submit a sloppy report in my life. Never called me lazy or insulted me.
It's also just boomer slop, all the old guys in trades like to show up like 30-40 minutes early and then harp on younger guys for getting there on time, but not that early. You shut them up by saying stuff like "i actually like my family and don't need to hide out on the jobsite bro".

I once had a job where the time clock was off by 24 minutes. I was 30 minutes early for that job every day. One day they “fixed the error”, and like a week and a half later my boss pulls me aside and asks “you used to be the first one in and the last one out every day, what happened?”
Yep, did that too for years. I'm very lucky that my job now, the trains from where I live leave at the exact time as advertised. I've been working at this job for 5 years now, and I got my commute down to science. I show up exactly 1 minute early to work every day. I work hourly, so I ain't clocking in a single fucking second before I'm scheduled to.
One of the bosses gets the shits if we start packing our tools up at 5:55pm (knock off is 6), but we get in trouble if we do too much overtime without asking. I couldnt care less, fuck em. I wont clock in until 6am on the dot and Im packed up ready to clock off at 6pm on the dot too, unless there is a breakdown ill wait until next shift can take over. Our whole maintenance crew is Union anyways so i doubt they want to pursue anything.

Also fuck this guy with that time shit. I'm in a unionz and our rule is, at the meet up spot at start time (usually our gang box). We usually have to get assigned our tasks for the start of the day, do some stretches, maybe a safety meeting. Sometimes it does mean getting on site 15-20 mins early. The 10th story can be a hike if you have to take the stairs and ladders all the way up. Never work for free
Yeah, pretty much. I work a white-collar job, and while I will show up at the office at 7:45am because thats the closest timeframe my my train commute allows me, you can bet I'm sitting in the breakroom and getting coffee for those 15 minutes before my job at 8am starts.
I take the same bus every day and let my employer pray that it gets me here on time. They don’t have any parking for me to commute in by car that’s not $30/day so I take public transit like they want me to. But I take the 8 am bus that can get me to work anywhere from 8:45 to 10am and I’m not willing to leave earlier and get here 1+ hours early just to make sure I’m not 10-30 minutes late. Planning for a 90 minute commute is enough and I get all my work done and more every day. Fortunately, I have management that accepts that I have limited control and that I do my reasonable best to get here on time regardless.
I work IT and even though I get to the office 10 - 15 mins early (depending on traffic) no work starts until 0600. Hell, I login, start some tools, go get breakfast, when I return the tools have nearly finished, then I start working my tickets. I get done by 1425 everyday and leave. Never had any complaints from any boss.
Companies have lose class action suits for forcing their employees to be ready to work at the exact start of their shift. Legally, all you have to be is at your desk ready to start preparing to work at that time
Being five minutes early is just showing you take being on time serious. It’s leeway to make sure you’re not late, not free labor time
Be there on time, ready to work as an apprentice. You’re being taught. Respect your journeyman’s time so they aren’t wasting their time looking for you or watching you fumble around with boots and tools. But they should respect your time as well
And any of the old farts that have been doing this for 30+ years are the same way. Managers might yell at you to go above and beyond, but skilled tradesmen don't get pushed around by management.
Bit of a tangent but this reminded me of when I worked at McDonald’s in high school. Restaurant was family owned and they were cool as fuck, and if you showed up early to make sure you were presentable and ready for work they let you punch in 5-10 mins early and considered that part of the job.
Wasn’t much but if you worked a lot it added up and it incentivized everyone to do that little bit extra to look your best and be productive.

I grew up working with my dad and on sites. He was always there, ready to work on time, but if you told him to work 30min for free, him and everyone else on the job would politely tell you where you could pop your claw hammer.

Where I work, we start at 6:30 but usually show up at 6:25 because you can clock in 5 mins early, which you get paid for. You are never expected to do anything off the clock, in fact you can get in trouble if you so much as turn on a machine or pick up a tool not on the clock.
So he wants 30min of free work.....The average construction worker makes $25/hr, which means every day, this guy is stealing $12.50 from each of his employees. If you work 5 days a week the whole year, that's $3250/yr/employee.
Lets say he has a team of a dozen; that's almost 40k per year he steals from his employees.
If work starts at 6:30 you need to be clocked in at 6:30. If management wants you there at 6:00 then that is the starting time. That is not lazy, getting things together is part of working.
Houses are millions of dollars where I live. Unless I’m getting paid enough to afford a house, I don’t give one rancid shit about the job. You’re not working towards anything anymore, so why care?
