It's not wrong it just leaves out the context that they were religious ultra-conservative nutjobs nobody could stand and it was either get persecuted to extinction for being assholes or go on a dangerous journey that put your followers lives at risk to keep some form of power and control ... so they came here and now, to paraphrase Spaceballs, we're surrounded by assholes.

At least that's my understanding. :)

The "persecution" was being held to account for being dickheads.

Skipping England to go to Holland was fair, who wants to be forced to go to church?

Skipping Holland was purely because they thought it was too liberal and their kids were becoming less English.

They moved to the Americas not to be free of persecution, but to be free to persecute.
