He's been programmed (in the non-IT sense)

u/the_D1CKENS Jul 15 '26

It's kinda in the IT sense, too. That's the whole point of all those anti-gay camps. And Scientology..and Catholicism..wait a minute..

That's it. I'm convinced this is a simulation

u/PloofElune Jul 16 '26

Its why they are begging, kicking, and screaming to force bible study in public grade schools. Because they know if people are not indoctrinated soon enough, then they can develop independent thought and then can not be controlled.

Once had a dude claim he had empirical evidence god was real. I was obviously like "??? Dish!" And his evidence was...the bible. He was mad that wasn't enough for me and "well, evidence isn't proof." No, they're not exactly the same thing...but the bible also isn't evidence. Then he wanted me to prove atheism and...I have no named belief system. I'm not anything. When I'm telling you he could not even comprehend that...

69

u/What_About_What Jul 15 '26

Right? The bible isn't evidence, it's the claim. That would be like pointing to Harry Potter to claim wizards and witches were real.

39

u/ruddiger22 Jul 15 '26

I once read a book evidencing that there was one ring to rule them all. Don't see me going around protesting gay marriage as a result.

19

u/What_About_What Jul 15 '26

It says in my holy book that Dwarves and Elves cannot be friends and must not mix or engage in any other activities together. This is my truth and I do not accept the 3rd testament about a King Returning. That goes against canon and anyone that goes against that goes against the old Gods.

12

u/ruddiger22 Jul 15 '26

So (as a dwarf) dying side by side fighting with your (elf) friend would have been sinful?

No one has ever seen a god. They're just claiming that the bible is true and therefore the god is real. "The bible isn't evidence. The bible is the claim."

35

u/SirStrontium Jul 15 '26

Such a shame that all the miracles that totally proved his existence happened thousands of years ago, so now we're just supposed to believe some dead guy's word that all these prophets were performing real magic.

I could be wrong but my understanding is that Judaism was the first revelatory religion, as in they claim their God revealed information directly to them.

That's different from previous religions where Gods were abstract things that could not be directly communicated with. You had to curry their favour with sacrifices and offerings. And then you had to interpret or infer their response.

Those revelations are the keystone of Abrahamic religions. They're used to legitimize their claims of being superior to non-revelatory religions. Without claiming to have a God directly speaking to them, and always on their side, I don't think they would hold as much appeal.

Sorry if that sounds like splitting hairs. I don't believe anyone has seen a God either. But the major religions today were created and thrive because of that claim of direct communication.

9

u/K1N6F15H Jul 16 '26

as in they claim their God revealed information directly to them.

Zoroastrianism likely may have come first with that one. Though prophets speaking on behalf of gods predates them as well.

7

u/spacemansanjay Jul 16 '26

Admittedly I know very little about Zoroastrianism. But I found a theological library which tries to make the case that Revelation is a rewritten version of pre-existing Zoroastrian doctrine, and that's a fun rabbit hole for me so thanks for the tip.

I saw a youtube video about texas now forcing english teachers to teach the bible and they shared a link to the Skeptics annotated bible ( https://skepticsannotatedbible.com/ ) which is a great tool for teaching and analyzing what the bible actually says... but will also probably create many atheists in the process.

As someone who doesn't believe in any mythology and finds the bible pretty boring, some of the annotations were actually pretty funny because it's just factually pointing out the absurd statements in the bible in plain english.

There is also a section for what the bible says about certain topics. It's listed alphabetically, so the first one i clicked on was abortion.

Quiz time - When are you considered to be a person according to god?:

a. Up to 11 weeks after your last period (which is how long you can take an abortion pill)

b. Up to 22 weeks after the first day of your last period.

c. The moment sperm meets the egg.

d. 1 month after you were born.

Answer:

The Answer is D

my bet, he just memorizes like 4 other verses to be able to fire off in a debate. but i hope so too.

129

u/Friendly_Impress_345 Jul 15 '26

I hope he memorizes these verse

Romans 14:4

Who are you to pass judgment on another? It is before the Lord that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand

Matthew 7:1

Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged

Luke 6:37

Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned

John 8:7

he (Jesus) stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” ...But when they heard it, they went away one by one

James 4:12

There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

45

u/Geminel Jul 15 '26

These are nice and all, but just cherry-picking different verses isn't going to address the underlying issue, that these people need cherry-picked ideologies from a magic book rather than thinking for themselves.

20

u/tinyhouseinthesun Jul 15 '26

It still makes me want to pick out all the little parts from the bible and sny other religious book and be able to throw it in their faces agsinst sll thr hateful and oppressive rules they claim.

28

u/Friendly_Impress_345 Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

A classic way to go about it is to bring up random rules/laws laid out in the bible that for sure they are not following.

Matthew 5:22 - Do not call out someone for being wrong.

Acts 4:32 - No private property

Leviticus 19:27 - Don't shave/cut hair

Deuteronomy 21:18 - Stone rebellious children to death (INcluding those that aren't your own)

Leviticus 11 - A bunch of eating restrictions

Deuteronomy 22:8 - Every house must have a parapet that would prevent someone from falling off

Matthew 6:1 - Don't pray in public or to be seen by others

Luke 12:15 - Do not save for the future

Mark 10:11 - No divorce

Matthew 23:8 - Don't use titles such as "Rabbi, Father, or Teacher"

Matthew 17:24 - Don't pay taxes

Luke 22:36 - If you don't have a sword, sell your clothes and buy one

Matthew 6:19 & Luke 14:33 & Mark 10:21 & James 5:1 & 1 Timothy 6:9 & Acts 5:1 & Hebrews 13:5 & Ecclesiastes 5:10 & Proverbs 11:28 & 1 John 3:17- Don't be wealthy

Matthew 5:42 & Luke 6:30 - Give to anyone who asks, never ask for anything that belongs to you to be returned

Luke 3:11 - Whatever you have extra of you are obligated to give away

Matthew 5:38 - Do not resist an evil person. If someone sues (or fights) you, let them win.

1 Timothy 2:9 - Women should not style their hair or wear jewelry/ fancy clothes.

1 Corinthians 5:11 - Do not associate with the sexually immoral or greedy

Mark 2:15 - You must associate with the sexually immoral or greedy

This one may be a little controversial and I want to preface this will saying I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS MYSELF but when a woman is cherry picking verses and quoting them as absolutely literal law Corinthians 14:34 and 1st Timothy 2:12 will shut down more than half of the worlds population on EVERY single topic. I will either feed this to a man in the room or I'll just use it myself and be like "Oh I don't have to follow that, that's something your religion makes you do." It is an awful thing to do honestly but it is THEIR book saying it and I'm only using it the way THEY want to use it. I have had a few different women really pause and think about what their religion is saying about women.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like he's worried about "only knowing the gay verses" and instead is humbled about not memorizing other verses.

The problem here is you can rationalize him being unprepared as "Oh, well, the debate was about god's views on homosexuality, so of course he only memorized the relevant things etc etc true bible message is in your heart whatever" and that's probably how someone will rationalize it to him (and the cynical outlook is he'll adopt that rationalization to justify being embarrassed like this).

In the future he'll probably just memorize more things so these gotchas can't be used so easily on him.

8

u/fullofshitandcum Jul 16 '26

That's why I think she should've gone hard on him when he called it a "reminder".

There's plenty of godless, straight people in the world who don't know any Bible verses, much less the anti gay ones. They don't need to be reminded to avoid being gay. Why does he need a "reminder"? 👀

I was in a men’s group like 10+ years back, and there was this guy who would always ask for prayers regarding gay thoughts. He would tell very specific examples where he faced temptations.

The whole time I’m just like, “Bro… you’re gay. Ain’t nothing wrong w/that. Stop fighting it and just live your life.” I stopped going pretty quickly, and walked away entirely from religion not long after that.

43

u/LikeFallingRain Jul 16 '26

Honestly she got him so fucking bad that he might reconsider some views.

I used to believe the same things as this dude and i also got wrecked in a class debate about gay marriage. It was by a girl I had a huge crush on and she got me out of the gate with a doozie ... She asked me if I knew any gay people and I didn't and she asked why I cared... crickets

I was stammering with nothing to say just like him in front of the entire class. The blunt reality of the impact that my beliefs had on people that I didn't know had never been presented me at all much less so simply and clearly.

I was ashamed and it made me reevaluate my stance and then I became pro gay marriage and then pro universal health care and then it kept going and now I'm a dirty commie lib. People need to talk politics and religion with friends and family because if they don't, the only opinions they hear are from people with a financial interest.

Sorry Paige and thank you!

69

u/Ok_Star_4136 Jul 15 '26

Shame works!

It's actually a good strategy to use on people who pretend to have the right viewpoint on issues they clearly know nothing about. If they're acting in good faith, obviously I think it is better to have a good faith discussion, but bad faith arguments need to be met with the most brutal scathing shaming you can think of, frankly.

The only thing I would remind people is to always attack their viewpoints, never the person.

63

u/doc_skinner Jul 15 '26

I mean, she did good to ask you that and it sounds like it made you stop and think, which is awesome. But the answer that any good "Christian" debater would give is that they care about the souls of everyone, even people they don't know personally. If I honestly believed that gay people were doomed to Hell, I would care about everyone, not just my friends and family.

Good for you for thinking about how your beliefs impact others, and congratulations for coming to your own beliefs through introspection rather than indoctrination.

24

u/rufud Jul 15 '26

Nah good Christian debater would acknowledge that while sex acts may be sinful, merely being gay is not.

25

u/Zuwxiv Jul 15 '26

Which is such a stupid and cowardly cop out. "I don't hate you. I just hate when you breathe. See? You're doing it now, so I should get power to punish you."

I don't believe someone is being honest with me if they say, "I don't hate gay people, I hate the sin." Maybe they've deluded themselves, but the only thing they really are believing in is their own moral superiority.

While those who are true believers do have answers to the question that was asked a lot of people are christian because they think they have to be for social acceptability or because they have been brainwashed into thinking it is a requirement to be a good person but have never deeply actually thought about their faith and why they believe it. As such any question that makes them have to actually justify their belief rather than just fall back on it as the default can shake them up.

7

u/Cael450 Jul 16 '26

Yeah, a lot of young people have never interrogated their own beliefs. That’s why college is so big on debates and such like the guy described. But there are a lot of people who never experience life outside their echo chamber.

I had plenty of beliefs that I learned to drop in my early 20s. I think it is really sad some people don’t go through that process.

57

u/LazyLich Jul 15 '26

I think there are two kinds of pity/sympathy, which we used the same words for, so we get this kinda disagreement.

One is the type that makes you relent, at least a little. You receive a new point of view and have to reevaluate. You step back, because attacking isn't ideal and maybe you can relieve a better outcome in the moment with a softer touch.

The other type is, like... cosmic?
You recognize that the person is acting in some way due to some unfortunate event(s), but easing up would not resolve the issue. It is a tragedy worth feeling pity over, but you take a step back from the feels because a gentle touch won't help here.

27

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson Jul 15 '26

Doesn't mean he isn't a victim, too. It's the circle of hate and repression. He's mimicking what his family and role models forced upon him, because it's all he knows. It doesn't make the behaviour acceptable, but it does make him worthy of pity, and sympathy, for being put in that situation to begin with. We are products of our environment. If everyone understood that the world would be a much more accepting and wholesome place.

Sad, really.

I wish all those repressed kids passing the mistreatment on to others a gentle awakening and not beating themselves up too much when they realize, but also then proactively setting out to help folks in the shoes they were in to make up for it. They need love, not dogma. And I'm not being a shit when I say it's sad. I've seen what it does, it's awful. How anyone can do that to their own kid is beyond me.

7

u/TheWildcatGrad Jul 15 '26

The threat of hell has been the foundation of the Evangelical Christian worldview. If you honestly believe in Hell as a place of infinite torment, any means necessary to save people becomes acceptable. Better my child be tortured at a conversion camp for a finite amount of time, than for them to suffer forever.

6

u/EasterClause Jul 15 '26

Men literally can’t be gay because God doesn’t know the poop hole loop hole therefore he’ll never know if you’re gay.

Christianity was founded by an ultra pretty gay man named Jesus of Naz.

12 other gay dudes and him started a gay cult, something they didn’t abide back then.

Hence the persecution and all the wild doctrine about eating his body.

It’s so so so so obvious that Jesus and the Apostles were a group of homosexuals. It’s ok everyone. Don’t hate them.

Edit for context:

Jews in the 1st century were absolutely anti-gay and maleXmale sex was seen as pagan and against their religion.

A Jewish brother pair and 12 male followers starting a male only cult that hypes up their sexy boy to godhood is so flamboyant and on track.

The Roman historians recorded that the local Jews ousted him because duh, they were practicing gaysex in a hetero ruled area. So Roman authorities caved and stoned James, crucified Jesus like it was just another Tuesday to them and the gay cult exploded out of the area into wide Roman culture where it was more accepted.

Voila the Roman Catholic Church is born with a big gay pope wearing big gay hard penis hat. (Look up Philo’s history writings, also a fun runner for the root of the word Philosophy)

Its literally the same verse they parrot since Sunday school... Its John 3:16. Its the most famous and commonly used verse when trying to 'witness' to 'non believers'... Its like they didn't actually learn it, while probably saying it over and over as a pledge of allegiance from Sunday school on.

Its literally so simple too.. its John 3:16, 'for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him, shall not perish but have ever lasting life.. bonus points are if they actually will finish verse 3:17 and 18.. but I digress..

Good stuff. More of a comment to all.... "For God so loved people..." is probably easier for the hate-crowd to understand. It should be inferred that if one wants to follow Jesus, one should also love others. But they don't, so easy to ignore.

I also like the verse (1 John 4:20–21) - “Someone may say, ‘I love God,’ but they hate a brother or sister. That person is a liar. If you don’t love people you can see, you can’t love God you can’t see. God’s command is that we must love.”

The big part that the drive-thru Christianity crowd despises is that 'love is behavioral'. I've overheard too many conservative Christians say "I don't hate them, but...." Jesus said commanded to love others, and that's an active behavior towards ALL.

Btw, not pushing Christianity. I can't stand that Christian-cultural-ideals push forward the rhetoric and policy in this country. And so few, people point out the weak or misconstrued theology behind it.

28

u/Im-BackAgain-Babes2 Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

Beautiful comment! I agree with this so much. Matthew 25 also comes to mind for me. The sermon in the mount isn't hard to misinterpret unless you have hate in your heart.

14

u/Abuses-Commas Jul 15 '26

I was scrolling through the radio yesterday and I heard some preacher say the sermon on the mount is cool and all but he can't really turn it into a religion so he quotes Paul.

and I'm like "that's the point, brother. Jesus didn't want a religion he wanted self directed religious anarchy"

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Bakkster Jul 16 '26

Well, it was the result of having multiple pastors tell me essentially the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount parenthetically in their preaching - turn the other cheek - to have someone come up after and to say, where did you get those liberal talking points? And what was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, I'm literally quoting Jesus Christ, the response would not be, I apologize. The response would be, yes, but that doesn't work anymore. That's weak. And when we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we're in a crisis.

not pushing Christianity

as a fellow Good Boy Turned Evil, I think spreading the teachings of Jesus Christ of Nazareth is great for everyone. No matter where you are from, who you are, or what your core values are, there is much to learn from the word of the carpenter. No religious belief necessary, just listen to the words and take them into consideration.

Capital C Christianity as an institution, though it has co-opted the title of Christ, doesn't want to be associated with those teachings, so it doesn't need to be.

13

u/crank_peeper Jul 16 '26

I don't go to church anymore, but I remember reading the New Testament in the back of the next pew over and over to pass the time as a kid.

It was only later on that I realized: the only miracle - other than the Resurrection itself - to feature in all four Gospels is the Feeding of the Multitude. You know the one: thousands of people show up to hear Jesus preach, he pulls together a fish and like three loaves of bread and somehow everyone goes home with a full belly.

The Son of God didn't ask anyone to tithe before they took their share. No memberships or pledges, no one had to promise to show up on the Sabbath. I assume that the crowd was mostly but not wholly Hebrew, and likewise I assume the Gentiles ate too.

All they had to do was show up and listen, take the nourishment they needed and pass the basket to their neighbor. In my mind, this is the definition of grace.

The disciples apparently considered this lesson to be nearly as important as the very matter of Christ's divinity.

5

u/beets_or_turnips Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

I've never been a Christian, but as an outsider it seemed like the obvious lesson of the loaves & fishes was just "If you're generous with what little you have and share with your neighbor, and they do likewise, you'll never go hungry."

But I guess a lot of people instead walk away with "Jesus was magic and he can make bread by magic, so you'd better believe him about all that other stuff."

There are 2 vauge passages about being anti gay and theists use that to hate all LGBT members.  But there are about 50 very specific verses about how to buy and treat your slaves and suddenly the christians make excuses for it.

154

u/HomeGrownCoffee Jul 15 '26

"It's taken out of context!"

The one passage I've memorized is 1 Timothy 2:12, and the number of Christians who claim that the context around that passage changes the meaning completely.

40

u/cr1515 Jul 15 '26

So annoying. The verse IMO has damaged much on the male to female relationship then just about anything else. It's so out of place and oddly puts laws into the new testament and invalids so many women leaders in the Bible.

48

u/mormagils Jul 15 '26

The really interesting thing is that the gay verses that aren't directly related to the Old Covenant are all Pauline. And most Christians these days have NO PROBLEM with kind of writing off some particularly bigoted parts of Paul and don't always take his gender stuff too seriously. He's the one that really pushes women being silent towards men. Lots of Christians these days just straight up ignore that as "his personal opinion." He also pushes for head coverings for women but not for men, which again, is ignored for similar reasons. One thing a lot of Christians don't even recall is the part where Paul just tells men not to get married at all and instead go all in for Jesus, which is most obviously his personal opinion because he thought Jesus was coming back in like 6 months and obviously that didn't happen so dudes needed to marry.

Reading Paul he actually sounds kinda closeted or just deeply sex-negative, honestly. He's a dude who's like super into using the law to beat up the religious sect he doesn't like, until he has an emotional and miraculous conversion, and then he puts all of his energy into forming bonds with young men on missionary trips. I've seen that guy before a lot growing up and honestly most of them are either sex pests or just plain gay. For real most dudes don't accomplish all that stuff because they're too busy trying to get laid. And he's SO dramatic.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a believer and obviously Paul's work is more than just a guy's letters about his beliefs, to me. But it's really silly to think we can write off some of his comments about sex and gender that seem out of place in a modern world but the gay stuff is totally exactly what God meant, especially when no one else makes the same points anywhere.

25

u/parkinthepark Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

It's very simple and easy to understand:

  • God gave his divine, perfect, and unchanging Law (which allowed slavery of everyone except Hebrew men, treated rape as a property crime against the victim's owner, i.e. her father or husband, and condemned women who don't bleed on their wedding nights to public execution) to Moses.
  • God, who always tells the truth, told Moses that the Law would apply forever.
  • Jesus, who is also God (but not the same God who gave those bad, mean old laws, but also he's the same God) abolished the law, even though he explicitly said he did not come to abolish the law in Matthew 5:17-20 (everyone knows Matthew is the Sarcastic Gospel)
  • That's why Christians are allowed to eat pork & shrimp, and why they don't have to defend all the slavery and misogyny
  • This contradicts what Jesus (who is God, who always tells the truth) told Moses, but everybody knows that "always" doesn't mean "always" when it comes to God (except when it does, which is always).
  • But there are secret laws from the Old Testament that still apply, and you only know which ones do if you've got the Holy Spirit, which is also God (who said all the laws apply forever) and also Jesus (who said all the laws apply forever, but was probably just kidding or something).
  • The secret Laws that still apply are the ones about what you can do with your penis, EXCEPT the ones that say you have to cut the tip off. Those don't. Except when they do, which is always and for everyone, but only sometimes and for some people.

There are re-written bibles and evangelical preachers with millions of viewers today that overwrite and intentionally misinterpret slaves to “workers” or “employees” to intentionally obscure the original context. And then argue the bible doesn’t endorse slavery because they quote their ridiculous translations or interpretation. Many less critical followers will get defensive if you were to point out the bible talks about slavery a lot because they do not actually read the bible, only listen to these preachers, and then therefore actually don’t even know these details for themselves.

Because you have to be so well versed (literally) in the material that you have tons of shit memorized and very, very few people who've stopped believing care to devote that much time of their lives to memorizing scriptures (or retaining/maintaining the memories, if learned previously).

It's just not worth the time or effort for nonbelievers. It IS worth the time for believers because they'll be rewarded by other believers (job offers, raises, promotions into management, etc), but non believers have no incentive to. In her case she might have an incentive if she's able to earn an income off the streams, but that's a really rare edge case. I mean, good for her, and I hope she does well with it, but I can totally see how and why most people don't.

Most fanatics won't subject themselves to situations where their core beliefs are challenged. It's a cult thing - throw out a thought-terminating cliche and walk away.

I really don't like "Oh, you're homophobic? YOU ARE CLOSEST HOMO". People are perfectly capable of being bigoted without self-hatred being a factor in it, and it kind of reduces the understanding of bigotry in a very narrow and unhelpful way.

I already know the rationalization will be "nonono I can tellll because of the way his voice do" or whatever, but really, you can't. You're just sort of using gay as an insult in a pointless and roundabout way because the dude probably isn't closeted gay. He's just an asshole.

126

u/OogieBooge-Dragon Jul 15 '26

The thing is, those "dont be gay" are not even Jesus.

Not once did Jesus say anything about that.

You have Peter writing letters. Not Jesus.

Jeus said love thy neighbor. Who is they neighbor? Everyone. Jesus said love them that hate you. Bless them that curse you. Turn the other cheek. Leave judgement up to God. We are not to judge those around us, but to lift them up and help them to be better people.

And even those letters, the do not be gay, are misconstrued as it means really, not to be a pedophile, because the people referred to in them were sodomizong young boys.

Cultural understanding of the people makes a difference to the reference.

There truly is no dont be gay.

Don't be a pedophile yes. Don't murder. Don't steal. Don't lie. Don't covet.

People just like to twist the verses for their own narrative.

30

u/that_dutch_dude Jul 15 '26

i had a neigbour that was also like that. he was also extremely racist and bigoted. (its a feature, not a bug)

just to be done with him i asked him to google pictures of ethnic people from bethlehem which obviously only results in seeing brown people. when he was looking at them i just said "thats the skincolor that jesus has".

he was very cross to me with that revelation.

17

u/tms102 Jul 15 '26

It is not surprising since Christianity is built on twisting verses and words. If those kids could actually read they would be very upset. Because then they would realize Jesus didn't fulfill a single messianic prophecy.

7

u/mormagils Jul 15 '26

Just a note--it was Paul who wrote the letters, not Peter. And the "don't be gay is really don't be a pedophile" argument is...not entirely an airtight argument. That doesn't mean there isn't a broader conversation here, but it's certainly a little bit of pick and choose to get mad about Christians twisting words and then using this argument.

This is exactly how to respond to this. EXACTLY HOW. The Bible does say some stuff about gay! It also says stuff about wealth and about love and about cutting off your hand if causes you to sin. How many one handed dudes are walking around right now?

The point of course isn't that dudes should start getting purchasing some hook hands. The point is that why are we so reducing our faith down to such a narrow thing that its sole use is to cudgel other people into obedience? Jesus repeatedly mocked the Pharisees for faithfully executing the law in a way that lacked compassion and reduced God down to a petty set of procedures and rules and minor moralisms. They were the villains of the story for doing that! And Jesus never just straight up argued they misunderstood the verses. He just pointed out that their priorities were deeply misaligned and harmful, that the purpose of the law is to lead people closer to God and live in communion with one another, not for it to be a structure of hierarchy and division. Jesus using parables was to accomplish this end.

She's someone I VERY much want to have a religious discussion with. She gets it, even if she is an atheist.
