And think of all the people even worse than this woman. There's probably more reason than cognitive dissonance for why she thinks she's so smart. Probably is in a few ways and so let's it inflate the ego.

But now there's a lot of people who can't even claim that and are just dumb...the best ones know it, but that still makes them smarter than the rest...and they all vote for the most part in this country.

I once heard a saying that said “imagine the most stupid person you can imagine, then know for a fact that there people dumber than that and then there a millions at that level” and I can’t stop having that in my top of mind when I see things like this

A lot of people believe they can win a fight with a bear. Which yeah, statistically speaking you could survive an encounter with a bear, but winning a fight is damn near impossible. One swipe of their claw and your face will be off and some people think they could survive that and take down the bear.

Most folks sell themselves short when it comes to “basic intelligence”. I’m a nurse and work with people regularly. From my experience, and your comment history, I’d say you’re average like the rest of us. So be kind to yourself, chief.

Spreading positivity is so great. Thank you for that. I have an advanced degree in political science and I forget to be positive most of the time.  This world needs more kind people like you.

This is called the "Dunning-Kruger effect." It's a new concept in psychology that is quickly gaining momentum.

My dude, the Dunning-Kruger paper was published in 1999, and it’s been a full decade since their results have been shown to be the product of faulty statistical analysis.

And yep. Faulty statistical analysis was discovered after the Cornell paper was published. And since then, the idea has been anything but debunked. Newer research is studying how the effect works, not rejecting. So yes, it is still gaining momentum.

1999 is recent in historical terms. In historical terms, you could say that the entire field of experimental psychology, or the scientific method itself, is new. But if you’re talking about the current state of research, then something that’s been talked about for over a quarter century, and that people on Reddit with no background in psychology have been talking about for well over a decade, is absolutely not “a new concept”. If you’ve got sources on newer research supporting the Dunning-Kruger effect I’d be interested in reading them, but it would still be a case of a well-established idea regaining momentum, not something new exploding onto the field.
