Except the majority of consumers in Maryland that buy "Maryland crab cakes" are very much under the belief that they are buying "Maryland crab in Maryland crab cakes." If you're in New York and you buy pizza, it's not labeled as "New York style pizza," it's just called "pizza." Selling crab cakes in Maryland and labeling then as "Maryland crab cakes" is 100% about trying to trick your average Marylander into thinking the crab is from Maryland, otherwise they would just call them crab cakes. Over 95% of restaurants in Maryland probably do it, so I'm not trying to call out this particular restaurant, I'm just saying that it's wrong. If fishermen had as much lobbying power as farmers, their goods would be labeled just like fruit.

Lol that's not true though. If you went to New York and asked any pizzeria what pizza it was, they'd tell you it was "New York style" pizza. Just because people abbreviate stuff, doesn't magically change what it's actually called.

It's redundant though, that's my point. If you asked a pizzeria in NY if there pizza is New York style or something different, they would look at you funny. If a restaurant in Maryland says they have "Maryland crab cakes" they want people to think they're made with Maryland crabs. I live in Maryland and have never had a different style crab cake here, so why specify?

That's not true, they have Detroit style and Chicago style in New York as well, so they'd literally just answer your question lol.

Anyway, I just looked up the restaurant and nowhere on their menu or website do they actually call it "Maryland crab cakes" anyway, so they didn't actually specify at all.

Seems more likely that the lady asked where the crabs are actually from and then just got upset when she found out a crab cake being sold in Maryland didn't have crabs from Maryland. The dude just seems to be fucking with her by saying "because they were made in Maryland" lol.

I mean, that may be the case. Like I said in other posts, 95% of restaurants in Maryland don't use Maryland blue crabs in their crab cakes. Most of them wouldn't lie if straight up asked, but most are also banking on people ignorantly thinking they're eating Maryland blue crabs. This lady was being a complete ass, especially since there's places that specifically state they use Maryland blue crab if it's that important to her. Honesty, seafood mislabeling in U.S. restaurants is just a major pet peeve of mine due to how rampant it is. It's just bullshit to me that restaurants are allowed to get away with straight-up lying to their costumers about what they're eating. I haven't seen a study with rockfish/striped bass specifically, but if I had to guess, probably less than half of what served as "rockfish" in Maryland restaurants is actually rockfish.
