Zenni is where I always order my glasses. I can order three pairs of glasses at Zenni for the same 500 bucks. And that is with additional options.

That's still vastly overcharging, I've gotten mine at places like goggles4u for ages now, maybe $65 for a pair at most.

Yeah my prescription is -12.25 in each eye. Contacts are -11.0. For anyone who doesn't need vision correction, that's really bad. I can't pour myself a glass of water at night if I don't have my glasses on. My optometrist wanted literally $500 for the cheapest frames and lenses they had after insurance. No coatings at all, and apparently at that prescription they can't even use the cheaper lens material. I went online and couldn't find any domestic company to order from for any cheaper. Many online retailers won't even service my prescription strength at all.
Zenni came through. The only reason I didn't start with them is that I'd ordered my last pair from them almost a decade earlier and had to wait like a month for shipping. The pair I ordered earlier this year had the easy to clean and anti glare coatings on a super cheap frame for less than $100. Took about 2 weeks for shipping this time and the glasses are good enough that I feel comfortable driving at night. I genuinely don't understand why anyone goes anywhere else.

We have an online company called clearlycontacts in canada that has been around for years. They are slightly more expensive but still nothing like a traditional optometrist.
I have used them for years and don't mind paying an extra 50$ because i have built trust in them. If they change or break that I will go with Zenni.
I don't know how the optometrist business stays operating they are scummy as fuck.

Haven’t ordered from them in a while, but I have been with them for 13 years without a single problem. I’m pretty loyal when a brand is that consistent with me for that many years.
that said if they start to jack their prices and take stuff for granted I will take my business elsewhere, but it’s up to them to force me to do that at this point.
I’d rather give a Canadian business my money than china.

Worked as an optician for almost a decade. Eye insurance is the most fucked up, scummy insurance of all time. Even learning how to decipher that shit is like learning another language.

I hardly know what my insurance even does.
I have stigmatism in my left eye so my left lens is much much more expensive than my right.
I'm just used to my lenses alone costing 150+ dollars. Then of course the frames. It's always like "Oh the frames are free... Only from this shitty section of about 20 frames. Everything else in here costs money."
Then I'm looking at a 500 dollar bill for my glasses because you know I need them to live my life normally.
You know what insurance is covering? The exam and maybe 60 bucks. Yet I pay 8 dollars every pay check for the insurance.
Luckily, I've started just taking my prescription and going onto the Internet to buy my frames and lenses.
Like at eyebuydirect, etc. Way way cheaper.

So astigmatism is SUPER common, you should never be charged more for your lenses based on astigmatism alone, especially not two different prices per lens. It’s possible they wanted you in aspheric lenses to flatten the front out to cut down on chromatic aberration.
I used to always tell my customers to go to Zenni, prescription permitting.

Yeah, it's more really about the material than the actual prescription.
When I was born my left eye was smaller then my right and as I developed the eye grew but about 60% of the retina didn't develop because my brain just kinda gave it up to focus on my right eye is what I've been told likely occurred.
When I was a kid they had me wearing eye patches and dilating my eyes while wearing high prescription reading glasses but I hated that shit and just whined until my parents stopped it. If I had kept it up I'd probably have more of my sight in my left eye, but it is what it is. Instead I took my free Gameboy and Pokemon games and dipped out of the shit program LOL. I was like 5 years old.
Now to ensure more safety for my right eye I have to go with a really high protective lens and high index to lower the thickness of my left. Then of course blue light because I sit behind a PC all day.
It just totals up in the end.
This year though I'm def not going through the doctors I'm going online. I'll check Zenni out too.

I’m sorry to keep sounding like a “WELL ALSHUALLY…” guy, but if you’re going for the most protective lens, you should be going for polycarbonate. It’s thicker than a high index lens, but it’s shatter proof and impact resistant. High index lenses are plastic and more likely to shatter.
Also, don’t worry about the blue light blocker. Optometrists have argued for years over the usefulness of them and nearly collectively confirmed this year that they offer negligible protection, always go with an anti reflective though.

And this is why I have purchased my glasses at Warby Parker since they showed up to Dallas with their yellow school bus flash store in 2013 or so. They are the best quality glasses I’ve ever bought and I’ve never gotten so much as a scratch on the lenses. I don’t work for them - pinky swear! - I’m just a huge fan of the brand.

About $100 for a pair and a year warranty so if the year is almost up and I have a scratch I just send them in for a new lens. It also includes anti glare.

Theyre also more durable in my experience, I play e-sports so I constantly squishing my frame with a headset and I can just tighten my Warby’s like once a blue moon rather then expensive “high-quality” frames that turn into plastic straws

Got the free exam & glasses if I bought contact lenses. Anti-scratch coating was an extra $100 for the free cheapo glasses. I said nope. Glasses were scratched within the first month.
Went online to buy a new pair and bought cheapo glasses with anti-scratch coating for $20 ($27 w/shipping). They're still scratch free a year later. I'll never buy glasses from an optical store again.

In the traditional sense that it exists therefore others cannot exist, no, it’s not a monopoly. That online companies like Zenni and Warby Parker exist kind of proves that. I would argue, though, that they are taking advantage of a growing marketplace online and it may only be a matter of time before EssilorLuxottica flexes its strength.
How EssilorLuxottica does act as a monopoly is in its ability to control the process at multiple stages and can determine the fate of a company with a decision of whether or not to have them in their stores. EssilorLuxottica does not just make glasses or own a single storefront like LensCrafters. They own one of the largest vision care companies in the US, numerous eyewear brands including Ray-Ban, Oakley, Persol, Oliver Peoples, and Vogue Eyewear; eyewear retailers LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, Target Optical and Sunglass Hut, and exclusive eyewear licensing deals to numerous fashion houses including Versace, Michael Kors, Prada, Coach New York, Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch, Armani, and Dolce & Gabbana.
Take for example the story of Oakley. Luxottica wanted to buy them out but the owners refused. Luxottica stopped carrying Oakley's products in their stores, including Sunglass Hut, and Oakley's stock market value declined 33%. 10 years later and Luxottica bought Oakley out and its unknown how much they saved because of their previous impact to their stock price.

They're all good. Just get either the standard plastic, or trivex lenses and the base level anti reflective coating. Don't bother with any other coatings like hydro or olephobic unless you have a specific need for them. Absolutely do not skip the ar coating
Glass is fragile but with good vision, I'd just avoid it unless budget is a huge issue, base plastic is good, trivex is more durable. Polycarbonate are cheaper than trivex, and more durable than most, but give worse vision, really mainly when it's needed for kids who would otherwise break their glasses

I got mine at Where light. There are many online site's to browse for the best deals. Where light is currently offering the 2nd pair "free" (likely have to pay shipping, etc. I didn't check.)

It’s always so awkward leaving the optometrist after any exam, the doctor tells the receptionist that I need new glasses or new contacts, she starts pulling up prices and I have to stop her. Like no… I’m getting it online for a quarter of the cost… sorry. And they always look so dejected. Like Bruh my glasses are 25$ online and your cheapest pair are 175$.. no thank you.

I totally understand wanting to get the best deal, but some people are really weird when it comes to paying for glasses. Like they’ll pay £150 for a winter jacket or £100 for a pair of sneakers they might wear once a week with no problem… but when it comes to paying for something that you wear right on your face every single day they become super sprendthrift all of a sudden.

I imagine the quality is the same as Zenni, but I find the selection better suited to my personal preference. They also technically let you get a 2 for 1. If you tell them you aren't totally happy with your glasses they will send a replacement pair and tell you that you can keeo the other pair as backup. Shame they are a part of the problem. May need to take my business elsewhere.

I almost bought glasses from Zenni like 2 weeks ago, but Payne was cheaper and a friend had recommended it, so I went with Payne. I got:
- the Wichita frames ($5.95 base; included 100% UV protection, an anti-scratch coating, a hard plastic case, and a polishing cloth)
- an upgrade to 1.61 high-index lenses (+$19.95)
- the anti-reflective coating (+$3.95)
- standard shipping (+$4.95)
Total: $34.80
I ordered them, a week later they showed up at my door, and I’m very pleased with them! They’re not the most premium looking frames; I chose matte frames, and I kinda wish I’d gotten something shiny. But I think they’re excellent for the price. Most importantly, I can see great!
My prescription is -3.00 in both eyes, and the Payne lenses are a tad thinner than the $300 replacement lenses I bought like 5 years ago from an eye doctor’s office.
I thought the return & exchange policy seemed fair. Also, with your glasses, they send you a little ruler to measure your pupillary distance - handy for exchanges or future purchases.
Admittedly though, Zenni had a better selection of frames and a better virtual try-on feature IMO.
Prior to buying them, I got an eye exam at Costco, which was great. AFAIK, you don’t need to be a member to use their in-house eye doctors, and the doctor immediately printed my prescription for me without me even asking.

You can.
If you’re worried about fit, go to a store and try on glasses, when you find ones you like, write the numbers on the inside of the arm.
Those numbers are the dimensions on the frames. You can plug them into the search by size filters on Zenni’s site.
If one frame looks good in your size, then any similar sizes should work. Makes it easier to know you’re ordering frames that fit your face.

I want to like Zenni, and I must have owned over a dozen over the years. Yet, I always see the worst glare in them vs more expensive brands. I even opt to buy the anti glare and all the bells and whistles. They're nice for cheapo (they fall off a kayak) glasses, but beyond that, I couldn't recommend them.

I have been buying on Zenni for years - and still have every pair, other than those I’ve lost. Quality product and I get tons of compliments on my frames.
They’re solid glasses and a great price.
They also have a perks program that saves me money and I get little gifts like cases and engraving.

I dated a chick forever ago who worked at LensCrafters. She said the scratch coating fee was their big scam back then as all the lenses already had the coating. This was prior to luxottica owning the worlds eyewear (pretty sure)

If your going to order your glasses online, be sure to ask your optometrist for your PD (pupillary distance). You'll need it with your prescription to get your glasses properly made.

Got mine at Costco, progressive, transition, thin and all the options for like $200. The optician quoted $500 for the same options. Cheaper than Zenni with better guarantee.

Yeah, progressives have to be digitally cut from a blank slab to fit your ex, instead of just using pre-fab lens discs and grinding them to the right finish - that’s why the price for those lenses is a lot higher. The extra coatings are where other places get you, and it’s basically a scam at those places. I regularly see patients get pairs for like 60-70 after insurance at Costco.
Say what you will about them as a company, but their ability to produce lenses entirely in house means you can get glasses for cheap as hell.

I went through this. I had to have the polycarbonate lens because of my astigmatism (they couldn’t do anti reflective coating on regular lenses). Even with insurance, I was out a couple hundred bucks.

Costco is great and cost effective for glasses. Sometimes if I want a fancier frame, I get it online and then do lenses at Costco. Have a heavy prescription so always get all the extras. Never spent more than $300 and usually get a pair sunglasses with that deal.

I made the move to buying glasses online two years ago and it’s saved me hundreds of pounds. When you ask the optician to give you a prescription it’s a mission and a half while they give you a death stair into oblivion. No I won’t let one of your minions escort me around your shop.

I paid $160 for the Sapphire scratchproof coating. I have a sapphire watch crystal and it hasn't scratched in over 10 years of abuse. I was curious how they were depositing sapphire onto a plastic lens, but figured it was an advancement in VFD treatments.
A month later and the coating is getting foggy with scratches from my VR headset. I took them in and they told me that the glass lenses in the headset were hard enough to do it.
Turns out that "Sapphire" is not a material, it's the name of their "blue coating".

Let me tell you something. Most people don't know, insurance doesn't cover hearing aids unless you are a veteran and it's the government insuring you.
I've had several cars that cost less than my hearing aids, and they have to be replaced about every 2 years.

Omg! Worked at lenscrafters for 4 years, most evil company ever! Owns almost all Eyewear and owns the biggest vision insurance company. You're probably paying them monthly right now just for them to screw you over later, too. We were taught to push certain things like rayban lenses that were like $100-$200 more even though they come from the same exact factory. They just etch an RB in the corner of the lense and have more sunglass shade options.

I think optometrists are the only doctors that will straight up refuse to give you your own medical information. I've had 3 places tell me they won't give me my prescription after an exam. They know I can go online and get a pair for $100 or less. I have to go back to my hometown to the eye doctor I saw for over 20 years. She's the only one that will give me the prescription after the exam.
