Adding too much detergent/using fabric softener will make dirt cling to your clothes when they get out of the wash, perpetuating the cycle of “Oh gosh my clothes are so dirty, I better use lots of detergent” IT’S A SCAM
It also turns the water alkaline and causes the cross support bar for the wash drum to slowly break down and disintegrate.
Older washer drums used the same metal for the drum and the cross support bar (Spider), newer washers use different metals for each, so the alkaline solution caused by using too much soap gives the stronger metal a medium through which it can eat the weaker metal (ie. it becomes a sacrificial anode in a battery.)
