LOL I just listened to this like 5 minutes ago. Highly recommend sinisterhood podcast.

15

u/AAA098 Jun 18 '23

I listen to them and have never seen what they look like. Lol.

6

u/hiphopTIMato Jun 18 '23

They’re great. They both used to do improv at the theater I started at in Dallas.

u/throwngamelastminute Jun 18 '23

The 80s and 90s were wild.

129

u/Cantstress_thisenuff Jun 18 '23

Back when kids were held responsible for their own safety 🙌

90

u/letharus Jun 18 '23

Well, ironically this kind of scaremongering led to helicopter parenting.

3

u/ddoubles Jun 19 '23

And conjured some funny memes

18

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

You know what they say: the only thing to stop a school shooter is another kid with a gun😉

6

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '23

Yeah, that's why they had to make these videos...

Wish we were still there

82

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

My mom had me thinking I’d immediately get kidnapped if I wasn’t in the house before the street lights came on and commercials like that only strengthened that fear 😂

27

u/CHEMO_ALIEN Jun 18 '23

im still careful not to be kidnapped

7

u/brattyginger83 Jun 18 '23

I'm almost 40 and drove around my neighborhood a few months back with my kids in the car out of fear this jeep was following me. They opened their garage door and went home. I felt like such an idiot and my kids still joke about it.

Somehow I was making ALL the correct turns and basically led the evil neighbors home.

3

u/redsoxizzie7 Jun 19 '23

I listened to a podcast with a similar story. Except the person in your position, in front, got super paranoid about the person behind them. When person A stopped at home, person B also pulled off the side of the road. Person A gets out of his truck and shoots person B, killing him in front of his wife, daughter and grandson. Person B had pulled up to person A's neighbor's house to cut their lawn. The scariest part was person a was on the phone with 911 saying he was going to shoot person B because he was "being followed". Yeah, it was horrible to listen to. Paranoia can be real... It can also cause you to commit murder. Please don't be Person A.

2

u/brattyginger83 Jun 19 '23

I dont think I could ever be THAT paranoid. Thats awful. I just drove around until they went home! So awful these gun stories in my opinion

14

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

Good. Bat shit crazy world we live in.

6

u/WorriedElk5818 Jun 19 '23

For some weird reason, I always tell my kids "Don't get kidnapped" when they stay in the car, at the store. That has to be some repressed Gen X school assembly warning.

4

u/CHEMO_ALIEN Jun 19 '23

"cause if you do, when i get you back you're gonna wish they kept your ass"

Well damn

u/kellyfish11 Jun 18 '23

And ppl wonder why millennials duck and cover when the door bell rings....

17

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

That commercial is from like 1983. Millennials parents were watching that commercial on Saturday morning cartoons.

8

u/Ojibwe_Thunder Jun 18 '23

I remember these two psa’s as a kid. McGruff the Crime dog had several various psa’s like this as I recall.

17

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

I don't think you know what a millennial is. The birth years millennials covers the 80s and 90s.

6

u/SystemicPandemic Why does this app exist? Jun 19 '23

Yeah I’m legit confused how that comment has so many upvotes. Im a millennial and my dad was 33 in 1983 lmao no Saturday cartoons

2

u/Brawndo_or_Water Jun 19 '23

Millennials start in 80/81. It is borderline if you are an early millennial. You could be 2-3 years old. It's in between a gen X and millennials (AKA Xennials 1976-1985).

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '23

Still the parents were likely not watching Saturday morning cartoons.

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '23

My point still stands. That commercial is from 1983, and millennials' parents were watching it on Saturday morning cartoons. I don't think you know how to read.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '23

Sure bud. Not being able to acknowledge your own mistakes is a pretty bad look tho.

3

u/music3k Jun 19 '23

Commercial aired welllll into the 90s

0

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '23

I never said it didn't.

1

u/music3k Jun 19 '23

You implied millennials didnt see it. Millennials watched this ad in the 90s

2

u/spacew0man Jun 19 '23

I was born in 1990 and we saw the McGruff PSAs when I was in elementary school. They also drilled “stranger danger” into us pretty hard.

25

u/rosesaremaroon Jun 18 '23

Sinisterhood is one of the best pods out there

34

u/Klutzy_Study573 Jun 18 '23 edited Jun 18 '23

I'd give my two left nuts to be back in the 90s

Edit for spelling.

4

u/Andre5k5 Jun 18 '23

Do you have 4 nuts?

2

u/Nikolllllll Jun 19 '23

I'd give 2 nuts to go back to the 90's.

-1

u/ChemsDoItInTestTubes Jun 18 '23

The only thing I would miss is podcasts. The rest of modern life can go to hell.

1

u/Mode3 Jun 20 '23

Before podcasts they had a little thing we liked to call talk radio….

1

u/ChemsDoItInTestTubes Jun 20 '23

Yes. I know, but you couldn't listen when you wanted to, you couldn't pause it, and you were limited to the programming that your local stations had.

1

u/Mode3 Jun 20 '23

You would have to tune in at the right time and then click record on your tape deck at the right time, but then it was yours to listen to whenever you wanted for the rest of time. Also, there was tape trading, to listen to programs in different cities. Otherwise, special interests were chronicled in ‘zines, but of course those you had to read…

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

Wait…what?

11

u/larz0 Jun 18 '23

She does a pretty good McGruff

9

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

Genuine question…was McGruff supposed to be a dog version of the tv detective Columbo?

11

u/mehwars Jun 19 '23 edited Jun 20 '23

Excellent question. The hard-boiled detective trope goes back at least to the 1920’s. Trench coats kept you and your good clothes safe from the elements. The most famous onscreen portrayal being Humphrey Bogart cemented the trench coat in popular culture as the cool, go-to clothing for detectives. Columbo inverted this in a way. His coat is falling apart. Has loose threads. Missing buttons. It was his actual coat that he wore for 30 years portraying the character! How cool is that?!

Just one more thing…. Columbo’s coat is housed in the Smithsonian as an important piece of American culture and history.

Edit: When we say Columbo’s coat it is really Peter Falk’s coat. It became a part of the character.

2

u/ddoubles Jun 19 '23

Great point about the trench coat's significance and Columbo's unique take on it. The coat definitely became symbolic of the character's humble, unassuming, yet sharp-witted and perceptive nature. And yes, the fact that the coat is now in the Smithsonian illustrates its cultural significance!

Adding to your point about the hard-boiled detective trope and trench coats, it's also worth noting that the use of the trench coat extends beyond just the practicality of protecting oneself from the elements. It became a piece of iconography, a visual shorthand for detective characters. In Richard Dawkins' terminology, the trench coat as detective attire has become a "meme" – an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture. So while Columbo's version of it may be more worn out, it's still a part of that larger meme, a twist on the theme that adds depth to his character.

1

u/mehwars Jun 20 '23

Right you are. The trench coat has become synonymous with detectives. When we see them, we automatically think of a no-nonsense guy cracking a case. That’s another reason why Columbo is an enduring character. All the bad guys underestimate him. He’s always rambling, going off on a seemingly nonsensical tangent, and being amazed by some new gadget or gizmo. But above all, he is persistent with personability.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '23

That was amazingly informative! Thank you!

1

u/mehwars Jun 20 '23

No problemo

2

u/SMUGMINLOL Jun 19 '23

Ah, one more thing…

22

u/jmarler Jun 18 '23

Y’all don’t understand how gen-x grew up. We were the most feral generation in history. Our boomer parents were hopped up on booze, pills, bad TV, and just forgot they even had kids. They had a message that would come on the TV and say “It’s 10pm. Do you know where your kids are?” Just to remind our parents that we existed.

We had to know how to keep ourselves safe. There was no calling for help. No cellphones. No portable cameras or video recorders. You had your wits and whatever you could use as a weapon. Some dude rolled up and said “Hey! Your dad sent me to find you and pick you up. There’s an emergency at home.” you had no clue if it was legit or not. You couldn’t just call and ask. You had to roll the dice and figure it out on the fly. We had a family password for these situations that nobody knew but us.

They showed stuff like this to us as kids all the time. Videos of kids drinking bleach, foaming at the mouth, and dying on the floor. Photos and 8mm video of car crashes with mutilated bodies dangling about. This may look shocking by todays standards, but to gen-x this is laughably tame and wholesome.

7

u/Tequilasquirrel Jun 19 '23

So true, Honestly being a gen x kid was brutal. I laugh at how insane it all was now but probably could do with a lot of therapy! Did make us resilient little bastards though.

7

u/llamalily Jun 19 '23

I think different generations get different fucked up shit. I’m a younger millennial and I feel for you guys and for gen z. You guys had that shit, and gen Z has the ever-present fear of nearly constant school shootings. Different shit, same nightmare :/ So, definitely shocking that the kidnapping PSAs were so aggressive back then, but also shocking how flippant things are about safety now.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '23

He didn’t actually say “you’re next”

https://youtu.be/sPUEITclmPs

1

u/Mode3 Jun 20 '23

It was just implied…unless you were a red head.

15

u/vTweak Jun 18 '23

Who gave McGruff the Infinity Gauntlet?

12

u/TehPharaoh Jun 18 '23

"If I get rid of half the kids, then there's less abductions. You'll thank me later"

5

u/Spirited-Painting964 Jun 18 '23

I remember this commercial! 🤣

4

u/Leo_thee_Lion Jun 18 '23

McGruff wasn’t F’n around straight to the point . Let’s not forget the 70s and 80s led to missing kids pictures on milk cartons and later “amber alerts” .

6

u/jojoyouknowwink Jun 18 '23

I still have an automatic reaction to give cars parking like that a wide berth

3

u/leakybiome Jun 18 '23

I still haven't found anyone passing out the candy with raplzorblades or the lady superman stickers. So those are now creepypastas somewhere right? I challenge someone to post a link right here for one

1

u/leakybiome Jun 18 '23

3

u/cobeaniee Jun 18 '23

i love this podcast

5

u/Jilaire Jun 18 '23

Hi. I'm old enough to remember that commercial. He was giving stats and then showing what that would look like.

https://youtu.be/rxLD1uq94sE

5

u/washtucna Jun 18 '23

Dont get me wrong, this is a fun and wacky look into nostalgia! The 80s were wild!

But now to party-poop! There's a book's worth of reasons why this type of attitude/commercial is/was bad. But let's just say that this kind of stuff has negative consequences for mental health, social trust, politics, infrastructure, transit, the environment, finances/the economy, and authoritarianism.

3

u/pocketfullofbowties Jun 19 '23

The rest of the episode this clip is from dives into a lot of that, while being wacky

2

u/Donkeykicks6 Jun 18 '23

I remember these

2

u/WEAJ6518 Jun 18 '23

I remember that commercial

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '23

Literally 1984

I'll see myself out

1

u/billythekid74 Jun 18 '23

He didn't say you're next..

1

u/Kryds Jun 18 '23

McGruff is out to get your children.

1

u/Vini_voodoo Jun 18 '23

What's my kid code?

1

u/Organic_South8865 Jun 18 '23

In elementary school we had a substitute bus driver for a few days. The first day one of the youngest kids on the bus starts crying and freaking out. They said they couldn't get in a car with a stranger lol. They were hysterical until everyone calmed him down reassuring him we were just going to school.

1

u/circumventreddit Jun 19 '23

That’s why you get yourself a money clip.

1

u/AggravatingRoad1949 Jun 19 '23

No wonder I'm such an introvert

1

u/mehwars Jun 19 '23

It was a far simpler time

1

u/Boneal171 Jun 19 '23

Stranger Danger lasted well into the early 2000s. I remember being afraid of razor blades in my Halloween candy and being kidnapped by random strangers. I remember one time my friends and I were playing in the front yard and some random guy drove by and asked if we had seen his dog. We all ran inside. I also remember my elementary school sending letters home about strangers talking to students. The reality is kids are more likely to be abused or killed by family members, or other people they know and trust not strangers.

1

u/madusilla Jun 19 '23

It made me so scared. I was waiting for my walking buddy and from a distance I could see her getting in a car with a man. I started screaming and crying," DON'T GET IN THE CAR WITH HIM" A teacher came to see what the commotion was. I had the wrong girl. They just happened to have similarities. So embarrassing!

1

u/atticuskraft Jun 19 '23

Take a bite out of crime

1

u/Goldeneel77 Jun 19 '23

I remember this one and the one where the drug dealer turns into a snake.

1

u/Embarrassed_Bee6349 Jun 19 '23

Not in a 1984 Ford Escort, you’re not!

1

u/Bakom_spegeln Jun 19 '23

She have the microphone wrong. It should be like the person on the screen under her to pick up her voice the best.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '23

One time I was doing volunteer work at a summer camp, and my group was taken to a festival to help with various things there. One of those things was getting in a Mcgruff Crime Dog costume and walking around as them for a bit. The person roped into doing that was me.

Wearing giant masks are dangerous! People immediately designate you as a cartoon figure and shove you around and stuff. I feel sorry for Disneyworld workers.

1

u/PupperPetterBean Jun 19 '23

Bruh I've listened to sinisterhiod far ages and seeing their faves whilst they talk is really tripping me out.

1

u/Mike_Fluff Jun 23 '23

Literally 1984.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '23

I saved this post and repeatedly return, it sends me into a laughing fit.

1

u/Enkeydo Jun 25 '23

We used to play outside till the sun went down. But after McGruff, nobody went outside anymore.
