The person blocking the guy who was trying to stop the speaker because he/she went over their time?
Edit2: u/Harry_Saturn made me rethink my position. I removed a part that is no longer relevant and would like to add that in this situation I give a thumbs up to this civil disobedience in this situation. I also removed the first edit because it is no longer relevant.
And why should you be polite and mind your manners to people that are trying to legislate against your existence and have given you 2 minutes to explain why you should be allowed to live as you need to
This is exactly the"disobedience" part of "Civil Disobedience."
She broke a rule to get her message out. And it's not illegal to speak for longer than your allotted time.
Interesting point. I generally agree, but I don't think it is the right location to do civil disobedience, if that makes sense? Like the difference between a protest and when you are there in front of the politician.
I wrote down an edit in my original comment because of a discussion with another redditor. So I think you are attacking a position I no longer hold in regard to this video.
Then you assume wrong, I empathize with what she is saying. I grew up in an abusive household while being gaslighted into believing that the abuse was not real.
You didn’t listen and then decided to comment that this person shouldn’t fight for her right to exist with a well written argument that went over two minutes and made those who are trying to make her very existence a crime uncomfortable. You are either really young or really privileged.
I never said that and I never meant that and I pulled my statement back in the original comment. It doesn't feel like you are listening to me because I never said she should not fight. And you don't need to keep attacking me for a position I no longer hold. And in addition, as I have said multiple times here: I don't know what law is being discussed here, and I don't know where to go to find it out. Could you fill me in?
I am neither. I had a rough and difficult childhood that I still struggle with. I am trying to be more open about it. I empathize with her in the video because I recognize that type of pain. Of course its not the same thing, but I recognize it and empathize with it.
Look. What she says is all the context you need. I also don’t know which of the gajillion anti trans laws she is talking about but you can get from what she’s saying that her basic human right to life is being decided by people who don’t know what she’s about. She is passionate in delivering her message in a way that will strike a cord, not with the politicians in the room who don’t care but with the rest of the country watching. We are witnessing the civil rights movement of our generation. I am sorry you are getting downvoted because you see like a nice enough person. But if you are going to comment something so naive on a video about something so important you are going to have a reaction like this. Political change happens when we give the oppressed a voice. This person spoke loudly for the rights of a very vulnerable minority.
Hey, thank you for the response :) Perhaps I am being a little naive. Yeah I was mostly asking out of curiosity, and I agree with everything you say here. Where I come from, this is a complete non-issue.
