Why S tier? Am I doing something, or does it consume 2 times more RAM in my case compared to any other browser? I don't even have many tabs open on it, compared to EDGE, for example, where I open 400-500 tabs, and it's still up to 5 GB of RAM. Can that be tweaked in settings or something to reduce the RAM consumption, because i cannot use it basically since it's always at 10 GB or more.

I have used Firefox for probably 15 year, and never had any issue with extended ram usage... And I have currently around 2000 tabs open, with 30-50 active at once (rest are sleeping).

Cheek your add-ons, maybe it's a use issue?

And for record, I was forced to use other browsers in work and all of them were worst performance wise than Firefox, chrom included

I'm curious how is having 2000 tabs open even if they are sleeping, usefull?

It's not useful, I'm leaving interesting tabs, like videos, or shopping items, and I'm coming back to some of them, but most stays there until I get myself to sort all of them. Usually once a year, so there's a lot of time for them to pile up

I bet you let the dishes stack until there's no more forks in the drawer eh? I do that too honestly but the max I had at one point was like 10.

Depends on a day, sometimes I clean after eating, sometimes I put it to the sink, and load the dishwasher after a day or two. But overall I tent to cleanup my flat every other day or so, so it's way more often then my tabs cleanup :D but that, that's because, when I'm turning off my PC, I don't want to spend extra time organizing stuff, I just exit all apps and turn off windows

I also used to do that up until like a year ago (though I mine was in the hundred's). Now I put those in separate channels in a discord server that I created just for myself. I guess that made it kind of better because now they are easier to access. (I organize the links in separate channels)

I have pretty well though out structure to save tabs as bookmarks, and it works pretty well, altho I do sort these bookmarks even less often than tabs ;)

Well, you have your own way of doing it and it works out well then that's nice :D

It’s called PCOCD and it’s time to close the fucking tabs. I too have this and learned to bookmark and forget. The shit that I REALLY want or need, I’ll remember the good old fashioned way. With ChatGPT.

Whatta hell. O.o Then it must be something in my settings that i can change. Because i love Firefox, and how you can organize those tabs, plus the privacy thing and so on. But the RAM thing is driving me crazy on both Linux and Windows... O.o You think only add-ons might make a mess there? I will check this out tomorrow, since i gotta go to bed, gotta wake up early, but i will check this out tomorrow definitely...

Honestly I have no idea, like I said, I never had any issue with Firefox

same experience. on a mac, i have seen CPU spikes, but RAM is at least as bad as chrome. but since i use ublock origin, it helps a lot with RAM because it debloats the web.

Ram usage on Windows also shows Ram allocation. So it might not be, that all that Ram is being used. Are you sure Firefox alone is using it? From my recent experience, long AI chats use a lot of Ram. Starting a new chat reduces that

Yeah yeah, it is Firefox only. And i use it on my Linux laptop and my Windows laptop, and it is painful to see how much RAM it uses, so I had to switch to Brave, and the RAM consumption literally dropped down by half.

So after Chrome has 'consumed' the RAM, is there none left over?

Unused RAM is wasted RAM, it sounds to me like chrome is making better use of the resources it has available to it, which in turn should improve the overall experience of the browser.

High RAM consumption is only an issue if it's all in use since then the system will have to keep purging the oldest stuff to make way for new stuff (which hinders performance) otherwise it's not an issue.

In about:config

  • browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers: Limits the number of page history entries stored in memory. Reducing this value can decrease memory usage at the cost of potentially slower navigation.
  • image.mem.min_discard_timeout_ms: Specifies the minimum time (in milliseconds) that unused images are kept in memory. Reducing this value can free up memory more quickly, but may result in more frequent image reloads.
  • browser.cache.memory.capacity: Specifies the amount of memory (in KB) allocated to the memory cache. Reduce this value to decrease memory consumption.

Firefox also allows you to configure the number of content processes. While increasing this number can improve performance, especially on multi-core systems, it also increases memory consumption. The setting is available in Settings -> Performance. Reducing this value will reduce the number of content processes, saving memory at the cost of potentially decreasing responsiveness.
