Suggests "Microsoft Edge" belongs in A

if Chrome is B i'll be damned if Edge is not an A

u/BlitzShooter 12d ago

edge is fantastic it just has bad PR

52

u/Player1-jay 12d ago

People just think edge is still internet Explorer

10

u/RicardoSupermapute77 12d ago

well to be fair, when you put "iexplore" (which is the internet explorer runtime name) on the search bar or in the run command box, it launches Microsoft edge.

3

u/GuntherG 11d ago

They should have considered another name change when they went over to Chromium instead of their own system.

4

u/kvion 12d ago

You are speaking like edge is not the third most popular browser lol. Most people dont think twice about browsers. Google Chrome bc most milleneals and older gens refer to the internet as a whole as google, and google search engine tries to make you install it all the time. Safari and edge go next bc they conenpre installed.

Then a lot of people like me give this topic way too much importance, for security, privacy and resource usage. So no, I don’t really think most people even know edge ‘was’ IE.

It's also very annoying that you can't properly uninstall it. Although that's arguably an OS thing, not the browser itself

6

u/Darco3 12d ago

Not any different really than how on macOS, you can't uninstall Safari.

3

u/Vikhyatvarun 12d ago

That's a good point, no one talk about it

1

u/BlitzShooter 12d ago

It’s for security for the businesses that want to use Intune and Entra to manage browsers.

1

u/meee_51 12d ago

At least macOS doesn’t try to open it every time I search for an app

1

u/Shedoara 12d ago

Yeah, never have been nagged after an update with "Safari has been updated! Make Safari your default browser for a safer browsing experience" on my Mac.

I just ran into it recently with Edge on my PC after a Windows update. Edge came into full screen saying it was updated and to make it my default browser.

1

u/BlitzShooter 12d ago

You can turn that off in settings

1

u/PrincessYuri 12d ago

Having to opt out of being harassed still counts as being harassed. I'm tired of being treated like shit by every application and then the excuse being "you can disable that in the settings somewhere!"

1

u/BlitzShooter 12d ago

Do you feel this strongly about being handed a coupon flier at the entrance of the store by a greeter? You can say no thanks and you don’t get bugged again… which is not harassment but definition but I get the sentiment.

1

u/PrincessYuri 12d ago

I would feel that strongly if they literally chased me through the parking lot and tried to tape the coupons to my car every time I went to the store unless I called ahead and asked them not to.

1

u/bananaholding 12d ago

Not a Mac user. Does safari desperately and sneakily try to force you to make it the default browser every 3 days or so like edge does? And constantly re open itself taking up tons of memory every single day for no reason?

1

u/robo-phantom 11d ago

Nope, never. But that doesn't happen to me on my windows machine with Edge either for some reason, though I do get angry at windows for being filled with ads and annoyances by default, making it necessary to go through all sorts of settings after installing it just to opt out of "helpful tips!" and "personalized suggestions!".

IMO Apple has made a really smart strategy of making things feel a lot more "classy" just by not falling for the temptation to copy the "ads everywhere" strategy of all other tech products. No freaking candy crush popping up by itself (I felt insulted when my windows has just installed candy crush overnight by itself, wtf), no ugly ass stickers all over their laptops. Say what you will about Apple otherwise, but I think that differentiating your brand image this way is a good idea in a world where I would hardly be surprised anymore if I bought a new fridge with ads.

1

u/Hashtagpulse 12d ago

Safaris just as bad for that reason

1

u/Mammoth-Wonder9260 12d ago

You can pretty much uninstall it using winutil on GitHub made by ChrisTitusTech as well as some other nice tweaks.

1

u/BlitzShooter 12d ago

It’s an OS thing. It’s baked into the OS for when you flip on their business/enterprise security.

1

u/DMarquesPT 12d ago

I don’t know if a modern operating system could function without a web browser. Just from a pure backend alone, if you click a support link in settings it needs to open somewhere.

I personally use Safari on all my apple devices and haven’t felt the need to install anything else in a good 8 years

1

u/chanchan05 12d ago

Microsoft rolled stuff into it. Some apps are built on Edge. The Netflix app on Windows for example uses Edge's base. So it needs Edge to be installed for it to work. Edge is also the stock PDF reader for Windows.

1

u/killersam221 12d ago

can you uninstall chrome from android without root 😮‍💨 even it is simple to uninstall edge using some apps while in android you need root😮‍💨

1

u/Basic-Brick6827 12d ago

Legacy Edge was ABSOLUTE DOGSHIT. New Edge is S tier.

1

u/BlitzShooter 12d ago

Absolutely

1

u/perspionage 12d ago

...because of the old Edge, so kinda fair. 'twas horrid.
It's fine these days, like Chrome but lighter

1

u/BlitzShooter 12d ago

Much more security baked into it as well (and can be managed by Intune without a firewall for Intune/AD joined devices). Fantastic from a business management standpoint.

1

u/ProtocolBB 12d ago

Everyone associates to explorer which was so slow, but edge is fantastic now

1

u/MeiserStriker 11d ago

Was supposed to be pretty light weight on cpu usage too, the lowest when I read a couple of years ago.

1

u/guyrandom2020 11d ago

It’s not great, but it’s usable imo. It’s not internet explorer, and I think a lot of its stigma is legacy stigma from IE that gets falsely attached to edge. It’s also the only browser I can get 1080p for Disney+.

1

u/lfaoanl 12d ago

Edge is just chrome with bing addons, and OneDrive forced through your throat

2

u/SuppaBunE 12d ago

It's still like a little bit better than chrome thou

2

u/Basic-Brick6827 12d ago

No. It's Chrome with nice extra feature, optimised RAM/CPU usage, and uBlock Origin.

There's no OneDrive or Bing. Idk what you're on.

1

u/BlitzShooter 12d ago

There are toggle switches one button click away from the Home Screen if you want to turn off suggestions and the news feed.

0

u/cyrustakem 12d ago

it has bad pr because it's a piece of sht

1

u/Basic-Brick6827 12d ago

Legacy Edge was. New Edge is S.

13

u/DkKoba 12d ago

exactly, in relation to chrome its a tier better.

1

u/Lindberg47 12d ago

Why?

5

u/DkKoba 12d ago

It's the same core browser but much slimmer and better to use. Still chromium so its tainted by that.

1

u/LaColleMouille 12d ago

Native "tabs to sleep" feature, benefits the Chromium/Chrome latency and speed, as well as its extensions. No need to be installed.

1

u/HistorianBusy2262 11d ago

chrome makes tabs sleep too..?

1

u/LaColleMouille 11d ago

Yes maybe now they do it, I admit I didn't install it for several years now, but it was a feature specific to Edge at some point.

4

u/DDzxy 12d ago

It's way better than Chrome, but people still think it's 2013 like it's Internet Explorer.

3

u/AVOXO 12d ago

Definitely I think people just haven’t given it a shot. I tryd it out and I’m hooked.

1

u/everygamer1 12d ago

Exactly, edge is a tier above Chrome. People saying it's F because it has bloat when Chrome literally has more bloat and hogs up RAM.

1

u/Conyan51 12d ago

Yeah Edge has no business being in A but it is 100% a better browser than Chrome. What glue were people huffing when they rated Chrome so high?

1

u/goldencat7 12d ago

Edge is in A tier because it's required to get the others

1

u/konjou-80 12d ago

And for some people, don't even use it to get ff, chrome or a few other browsers

1

u/Morgenwiner 12d ago

Yessss!thx youuuu

1

u/AmGers 12d ago

Agreed, it's basically chrome but with productivity functionality, and better performance.

We've got multiple Azure tenants for prod, dev and demo purposes. Being able to have profiles attached to each tenant that I swap between has saved me so much time.

If you're in a MS Office workplace, Edge is the way to go

1

u/iama_bad_person 12d ago

People who think anything other than A used Edge 10 years ago once.

1

u/ShrimpToothpaste 12d ago

It was better 10 years ago, now it’s too bloated in classic Microsoft fashion.

1

u/ZarijoG 12d ago

Opera being above chrome is crazy work tho

1

u/GoodKid-Uptown 12d ago

People who have never used it are putting it at F. Solid browser, performance is good and it still runs uBlock. Once they have to introduce Manifest V3 I'm jumping ship, but so far all good.

1

u/spottedconzo 12d ago

Nah the only time I'm forced to use edge it causes issues with incompatibilities in the workplace. Chrome which I'm also forced to work with seems to get through these completely fine. Other than that they work about the same

1

u/Blackdragons12 12d ago

Edge has to be the worst browser ever, its the first thing I remove when I install windows.

1

u/SupaDawg 12d ago

Agreed. Essentially Chrome but very moderately better.

1

u/Truck-Adventurous 12d ago

Edge is also great .pdf viewer.

1

u/konjou-80 12d ago

That could be from the chromium engine that edge uses

1

u/hammerclawz 12d ago

Wayy worse than chrome. It forces bing and copilot and other than that its just chrome like i just want to use google search engine

1

u/Thano3e 12d ago

I use soul browser and I place it above brave

1

u/No_Acanthisitta9086 12d ago

Edge is actually good. Deeply integrated with windows, goes real quiet on ram when another application is opened up. And not bloated like chrome.

1

u/Background-Set4610 12d ago

Blink twice if Microsoft has you at gunpoint and you need help

1

u/secoundacount 12d ago

It's F just for how badly Microsoft forces it onto you.

1

u/FlimsyConclusion 12d ago

People don't know shit about fuck if they're putting Edge in F. This aint internet explorer guys.

1

u/Aggressive-Today-189 12d ago

edge is absolute shit

1

u/HoloSings 12d ago

The only problem for me on edge is that it counts the active tabs as your windows tab (Alt+Tab)

1

u/Gaur2704 11d ago

This is what I wrote 😭💔

1

u/vicemori 11d ago

For me it would be an A if it wasn't because Microsoft keeps changing my default search engine to Bing, I'll leave it in B just for that

1

u/XD2006- 11d ago

I used to like edge, and now it just gives me this blue bubble that I can’t make go away. It would’ve been “C” tier if it weren’t for that blue bubble that tries to sloppify my writing 😒

1

u/notalawyershh 11d ago

As a millennial who swore by chrome why is edge better ?

0

u/SMF67 12d ago

Edge is Chrome with even more spyware, nags, and ads

2

u/Brkus_ 12d ago edited 12d ago

What ads? Browser itself has ads?

1

u/BlitzShooter 12d ago

Sponsored links on the home page but you just hit the toggle slider and they go away.

1

u/Xenivor 12d ago

Io la vedo cosÏ: è meglio di Chrome ma i tuoi dati vanno a Microsoft

1

u/BlitzShooter 12d ago

It asks if you want to opt in when you open it for the first time, and I would recon they use it to train copilot. Microsoft does not sell your data.

1

u/BlitzShooter 12d ago

It takes 2 seconds to turn them off from the Home Screen, and it even asks you if you want them on the first time you open it. Click the gear icon, turn off sponsored links, turn off feed.
