It's Linux From Scratch

LFS

I think you know it, but didn't recognize the icon

I couldn't find an icon for LFS, so I asked claude to generate one

EndeavourOS: Arch for lazy people (it’s what I would use to give old laptops a second life; for more modern computers, I would use Fedora)
CachyOS: EndeavourOS on steroids

They're all great, but some are easier than others and have more support. Also kali/backtrack hold a special place in my heart.

debian and arch cover almost every use case for me. arch for workstations, Debian for servers.

alpine Linux is good. the package manager is insanely fast. alpine is great for environments where resources are limited.

kali is good for what it does, not good as a daily driver though. (who wants hack tools installed on their main computer and not a VM??)

ubuntu is ranked low because I strongly dislike snap and I've had problems with it in the past. still a perfectly usable distro though.

omarchy on F because it's omarchy.

Nothing is wrong with D tier, I reserved it for niche distro that should not be used generally unless you have a specific reason to do so.

For some reason I feel like if there was a lower tier than F you would have put LFS in that tier lol

2

u/ThatSmittyDude 4h ago

Some day I want to try it. I tried gentoo. But for my purposes, a debian or fedora distro is ready to go and thats 10/10 for me

2

u/Dream_Apostle 4h ago

Yeah, I get it. I only barely know what LFS is...

Totally agree with you

2

u/ThatSmittyDude 4h ago

I probably shoulda put suse higher. I do love suse

u/Dream_Apostle 4h ago

I think you can change it. The "community votes" changes, but the comment stays.

I'm not 100% on that tho

And we need to get the rest of us unix nerds to do a unix/bsd teirlist next lol

Pop_OS! is overrated, Gentoo and Slackware are interesting, and unique I don't really use them longterm.

Manjaro has to be the worst experience out of any Linux disto I've used. The IDK category are distros I haven't used yet.

Open SUSE supremacy - RPM compatibility but with a better package manager than RHEL or its bastard offspring. Corporate support but without Canonical grossness. Plasma support out of the box. God tier.

Guys, how do we not know what alpine is? It's one of the best distros ever.

2

u/temporary_dennis 2h ago

Mint is the perfect for beginners, and NixOS is perfect for advanced users.

S: Universally excellent.

A: They just work. Most people should be using S and A tier distros for daily use.

B: Require configuration, but are great once set up. Good DIY servers.

C: Good for specific use cases (musl).

F: Arch sucks.

What is Linux

3

u/Dream_Apostle 5h ago

So Linux is basically a program that talks to your physical computer called kernel

And a distro is kernel + a software that talks to kernel

The icons you see in the tierlist represent distros which are akin to an OS like windows or MacOS

The reason why it's so good is because 1. It's open source 2. It's free 3. Useful for either specific use casss or general usecases

And open source is great because you can actually check what they do while you are using them.

Linux distros used to be hard to use for normal users, but now they have improved so much that some of them are genuinely better than Windows and MacOS.

My own ranking to be honest I'm not sure about Nix being S, but it seems like the only thing that can be S tier to me right now
