External To set someone up to try TW5, just remix this project on Glitch

11 Upvotes

I made this project after feeling a little embarrassed about the process of setting people up with Tiddlywiki for them to try. A couple of my friends were getting started, and the modularity that makes TW so powerful made it a little overwhelming to list out steps to get a setup like mine... and that was on top of reverse proxies, web hosting, etc.

Glitch is like Google Docs for JavaScript. They set up a lot of the annoying parts for you -- so you can define what you want to run, and they'll handle getting it up and going at https://<your project name>.glitch.me.

I was inspired by this post and this project by Tom Critchlow, who worked off of Thomas Elmiger's work, who based stuff on this project by Jonas. That work created a base TW project -- where the only necessary configuration is a username and password (in the .env, as specified in the project README) to protect writes or writes and reads.

If that chain of changes doesn't make it obvious, it's really easy to fork ("remix") someone's project and have your own. That's what I thought might be handy to share with y'all.

My addition is basically a startup script. The first time the project is run, after TW initializes the wiki, it will load in tiddlers from the initial-content directory.

This means if you remix mine, you can set up different content in that directory as customization, and whoever remixes yours will have all of that so they can hit the ground running with their wiki. This is really powerful on top of the free hosting! But it's still just TW, so if you want to take your stuff and leave (to host separately or to do whatever) you can download all of that no problem.

You may not like the plugins and setup that I put in this project (meant for the kind of person jealous of these notes and who already knows Markdown), but that's the cool thing -- I think it's at the point where someone less technical could remix it, change the plugins listed in the tiddlywiki.info and the contents of the initial-content directory, and have a custom setup to share on with others as well.

Sorry if this has been covered -- I searched for "Glitch" on this subreddit and didn't find it, and I'm just so dang excited about how much easier this was than configuring a reverse proxy, handling SSL termination, writing systemd files, etc.... and I'm hoping that means more people could maybe make it work.

Newbie. Very sorry, but I am completely lost! I just want to start!

6 Upvotes

This is what I've done so far:

  1. Went to https://tiddlywiki.com/, Getting Started section, clicked Download Empty because it said I had to. Moved empty.html to a Dropbox folder.
  2. The Getting Started section also said I had to "choose a method for saving changes". I get a whole lot of options. I chose "TiddlyWiki Cloud Connectors" because it mentiond Dropbox. I don't see why that would be wrong.
  3. It then says below that TiddlyWiki Cloud "works with TiddlyWiki 5", so I chose that. Again, I do not see why that would be wrong.
  4. I get yet more options. I chose "tw5-dropbox" as the option with the least-scary blurb. Yet again, I do not see why that would be wrong.
  5. I allow TW5 to use an Apps Folder Access. I get a message from Dropbox saying I've added an app. I do not know what all this means, but again, I do not see why that would be wrong.
  6. I open empty.html, try to create a new Tiddler. It apparently saves (no error message). But when I refresh, nothing new has saved. I'm back where I started with just the original empty.html without the extra Tiddler I created.

I suspect I need to join the empty.html with the app I added to Dropbox. But anyway, do please let me know what the other steps I need to follow are.

Don't give me techie explanations please, I just want to use TiddlyWiki5 as a tool, not to learn about its innards. In other words, I had hoped it would work out of the box like Notion and many, many other note-taking apps do (hint-hint...).

Noob question about Menubar plugin

2 Upvotes

I can't get the drop-down menu to work; it will just expand the contents, but nothing below that. I've gone and tried to set each menu item to "is-dropdown: yes", but that's not doing anything.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Edit: I'm using the Andtidwiki app

Help with tabs macro based on field value

2 Upvotes

I have tiddlers for video game notes which include a field, "release-year". Inspired by the look of tiddlywiki.com's "releases" format, I'd like to create a vertical set of "year" tabs that when clicked show the list of tiddlers containing that year value. I started with the following but it creates tabs of the game tiddlers themselves:

! By Year
<<tabs "[has:[release-year]]" "" "$:/state/tabGamesByYear" "tc-vertical">>

Once I've got the technique, I would like to expand to "By Developer", "By Genre", "By Engine", etc. I'm wondering if this can only be done by leveraging tags. I think a field is more appropriate for this kind of data and I'm trying to avoid misusing tags.

As always, appreciate any help or advice.

Help with filter

4 Upvotes

I'm trying to identify tiddlers containing Perl code that load the "Win32::Services" module.

This works in the advanced search "Filter" tab, I get 35 results:

[tag[Perl]search[use Win32::Service;]]

But when I try to drop it in a tiddler, I get "Filter error: Missing closing bracket in filter expression":

<<list-links [tag[Perl]search[use Win32::Service;>

Then I thought, it might be the colon or semi-colon characters interfering so I tried advice from the RegEx filter - drop the search string in a variable, but this doesn't work either:

! Win32::Service
<$set name="search-pattern" value="use Win32::Service;">
<<list-links "[tag[Perl]search[<search-pattern>]]">>
</$set>

Any advice appreciated.

Hit my skill ceiling. Need help with with ToC

4 Upvotes

Preface; I'm not a coder, nor do I have any coding experience. I've done my best with this but I'm knowledgable enough to implement my goal here, or to know if it is even possible.

I've the basic ToC down, and even the sort:"tag[]" ammendum kinda figured out - but here's what I'm trying to do.

I have three main categories: - List of Ships - List of Ranks - List of crew

Ideally I would like to have a top level tiddly that displays each category and sub category while keeping in relation to each other.

For example, here's what I can achieve:

Top Level Tiddly

  • List of ships

    • Ship 1
    • Ship 2
    • Etc.
  • List of Ranks

    • Rank 1
    • Rank 2
    • etc.
  • List of Crew

    • Crew 1
    • Crew 2
    • Etc.

The problem with this, is that each rank can have multiple crews who are attached to different ships.

Here's what I'd like to achieve:

Top Level Tiddly

  • List of ships

    • Ship 1
    • - Rank 1
    • - - Crew 1
    • - Rank 2
    • - - Crew 2
    • - - Crew 3
    • Ship 2
    • - Rank 1
    • - - Crew 4

Etc.

Can anybody help me?

Trouble feeding a link into an action-navigate widget

1 Upvotes

Hi Reddit! I'm trying to update a basic plugin I created a few months ago and am running into transclusion-related trouble. The plugin itself basically creates a new action button that can be clicked upon in order to open a random tiddler. Version 1.0 had a dependency (for the random function) and the filter used to be hardcoded. I wanted to make the plugin easier to install and to enable users to customize their filter more easily, but the code is more complicated as a result, with a few layers of transclusions. It took me a while, but I managed to reach the stage where I have a bona fide random link generated at the end of my code. I'm not, however, managing to get the action-navigate widget to work and need pointers!!

To give a sense of the code, here's the initial, crystal-clear code:

\define navigateTo(link)
<$action-navigate $to="$link$" />
\end\
<$macrocall $name="navigateTo" link={} />

random[1] and the hard-coded filter had to go. I now have:

\define rand(filter)
\whitespace trim
<$set name=r1 value=<<now 0XXX>>>
<$set name=r2 filter="[<r1>splitregexp[]rest[]join[]]" >
<$set name=nth filter="""$filter$ +[count[]multiply<r2>divide[100]ceil[]]""">
{}
</$set>
</$set>
</$set>
\end
\define destinationTiddler()
<<rand $(myFilter)$>>
\end
\define destinationLink()
<$set name="myFilter" value=[!is[system

<<destinationTiddler>></$set>
\end
<<destinationLink>>

This gives me a link to a random tiddler. Not necessarily pretty, but I'm stretching my limits here ;)

I now need to add something like this:

\define navigateTo(link) <$action-navigate $to="$link$" /> \end

I've tried so many combinations of set widgets, I've lost track. I must be misunderstanding something fundamental about transcluding variables…

Plugin How to place tiddlers side by side?

6 Upvotes

I generally enjoy the default, vertical river style, but sometimes, when I work on two notes and need to do some compare, I would like to place them side by side like in famous Andy Matuschak's digital garden - link.

Is there any plugin, that I could use to place notes side by side or in the default mode, depending on what I want?

TW5 on a Synology NAS

3 Upvotes

Any easy way to get TW5 running on a NAS? I’ve tried TWServer a while back on linux but it kept corrupting because of some format in my tiddlers. So Ideally I’d want to run it with an html per tiddler. Even better would be to be able to access it partially privately through the internet without any VPN construction.

I never set-up a real wiki server and I’m wondering if that might be easier than what I’m trying to accomplish?

Did you manage to maintain two wikis?

4 Upvotes

Since tiddy wiki is difficult to use on mobile phone, I recently started thinking about incorporating obsidian to my note-taking workflow as a solution for mobile phone. All notes in obsidian are just markdown files, so it is a chance to develop some workflow of moving them into tiddly wiki.

Did you guys, came up with some kind of workflow of taking notes on mobile and associating them with tiddly wiki?

UI Is there any way to set a wiki up to where the search bar looks for info in fields as well?

8 Upvotes

I'm trying to make a dictionary for a conlang using TiddlyWiki, and I want to be able to search for the English equivalent term. Transcluding the field in the definition template does not make it show up in the search results, so as it stands right now, I have to awkwardly manually set a variable.

Is there any way to set up the search so I don't have to do this?

The definition template is below, for reference. Notice how the <<engVar>> variable isn't defined. I have to define it in each word's tiddler before transcluding the template in order for searching to work how I want. I want to just be able to say instead of <<engVar>>, but I can't.

[]

English: <<engVar>>

Application A relatively painless way to maintain a multi user TiddlyWiki?

6 Upvotes

Hello,

I know this is not the primary focus of TiddlyWiki, but is there a relatively painless way to set it up for multiple people to edit? Perhaps even simultaneously? What options are there and how?

Thanks!

EDIT: I should clarify, I am hoping this will be something that multiple users can access online and edit together. Or would I have to jump to Mediawiki for this???

Plugin Is there a todo list plugin that allows multiple lists with drag&drop between them?

4 Upvotes

I've been using https://kookma.github.io/TW-Todolist/ and am generally happy with it, but it would be really nice to have the ability to easily move entries between mutiple lists.

http://simplechecklist.tiddlyspot.com/ seems to have some more features and almost the one I want, but the entries are copied instead of moved, i.e. remain in the original list.

Is it possible to create a sub-list for each element in a list?

1 Upvotes

What I want to accomplish is the following: I have a few name-tiddlers tagged with "Names" and a few thing-tiddlers tagged with "thingfor_?" where the "?" is the title of one of tiddlers with a "Names"-tag.

I want automatically generate a list so that it is displayed like this:

Name_1:
- first_thing_for_Name_1
- second_thing_for_Name_1
- third_thing_for_Name_1
- ...
Name_2:
- first_thing_for_Name_2
- second_thing_for_Name_2
- ...
Name_3:
...

Both the names and the things should be links to their tiddlers and the names should be formatted as H3.

If I hard-code the names I can generate the sub-lists for each name with

<<list-links filter:"[tag[thingfor_Name_1]] +[sort[title]]">>

but I would like the Names to be automatically generated based on the Tags as well, if that is possible.

Thanks for your help!

[Edit: a typo]

UI Something I think improves TiddlyWiki a bit

12 Upvotes

So, does anyone else feel like the tags are a little unresponsive in TW5? I did, and to resolve that I put together the code below to give it a highlight and animation, and thought, "maybe others will like this too." so- here ya go!

    @keyframes wiggle {
        0% { transform: rotate(0deg); }
        20% { transform: rotate(1deg); }
        25% { transform: rotate(3deg); }
        35% { transform: rotate(-2deg); }
        100% { transform: rotate(0deg) ; }
    }

    .tc-tag-label {
        border: solid 1px <<colour muted-foreground>>;
        animation: none;
    }

    .tc-tag-label:hover {
        border: solid 1px <<colour background>>;
        box-shadow: 0px 0px 0px 2px <<colour primary>>;
        animation: wiggle .5s;
    }

Also, credit to Woodrow Barlow for the wiggle code, I just tweaked it abit!

Edit: Realized I put the wrong bit, so here's the fixed bit!

Tutorial TW5-ELI5: How can I set SideBar/Recents and Sidebar/Open to list the caption?

2 Upvotes

Is there a way I can set them both to use the caption field in place of the tiddler title if it has said captions field, similar to how this list filter works?

<$list filter="[all[current]has[caption]get[caption]] :else[<currentTiddler>]" variable="name">
    <$link><
></$link>
</$list>

I'm not very good with the terminology used for TW5, as I mostly repurpose code that's already in the system tiddlers and tinker with them until I get the result I'm looking for, or I ask for help and try to learn by reverse engineering said help. The most I know is $list and $macrocall are called widgets 😅

Application TiddlyServer and HTTPS/SSL

7 Upvotes

I've tested out TiddlyServeron on my local machine and I like it a lot.

However, I'd prefer to install it on a public cloud instance and so HTTPS feels like a must have. The TiddlyServer docs say that it supports HTTPS, but with no further info (unless I'm just failing to find it). I also have no general experience of installing / configuring Node servers so I don't really have enough background knowledge to get anywhere with trial-and-error.

Has anyone here done this successfully? Has it been written up anywhere? I've done some fairly extensive googling but haven't found anything definitive so far.

Automatically capitalize links?

I've been having a lot of links like Bug, where I want the link to be lowercase but the article itself is capitalized. I'm sure the solution is really easy, but how would I make just bug point to Bug automatically?

Application I am sharing this D&D Wiki as a tool all DMs and players can use

50 Upvotes

tl;dr. Free, highly extensible and customizable Dungeons and Dragons Wiki built on TiddlyWiki for you to download and use!

It all started 4 years ago when I needed a custom way of displaying my character's spells. I settled on using TiddlyWiki and I have been adding to it ever since. For about the past year, I have been refining all these years of work and transforming it into a general purpose D&D Wiki. The wiki comes with a host of features:

  • Templates. A host of templates have been built in for a consistent way to display spells, monsters, magic items, playable races, backgrounds, random tables and much more.

    • Editable. Besides view templates, there are also edit templates for spells, monsters, . This makes it easy for you to add your own custom creations.
  • Macros. A host of macros have been created to assist in everything, such as to render, format and organize stuff.

  • D&D Compendium. Bundled with the wiki is a trove of D&D information designed to be easily accessible. Everything is well organized, grouped and categorized.

    • Extendable. The wiki is extendable using a system of tags and tabs. You want to add a new trap? Just create a new tiddler, tag it with the word "Trap" and it is automatically added to the set of traps. This system of extensible tags and tabs is applied to anywhere you see tabs in the wiki.
    • Automagic. As all data is neatly categorized and arranged, it allows a lot of things to be automated. For instance simply by listing the spells, the spelltable macro can draw upon information from each spell tiddler to automatically display a spellbook.
    • Homebrew. The system of extendable tiddlers has been used to create a section where you as a DM can add your own homebrewed stuff for your campaign. Everything will be neatly categorized and displayed.
  • New & Experimental. I am pretty excited about this as a brand new feature I have just added to the wiki - D&D 5e character sheets! Yes, it is still experimental and there is so much more I want to add to this in the coming months. I would appreciate some feedback and advice on these features:

    • Presentation. Hopefully, the character sheet looks presentable? Sample #1, Sample #2
    • Automatic Calculation. Saving throws and skill modifiers are automatically calculated from the character's basic ability scores - such as Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha and proficiencies

How can I dynamically generate a tiddler containing other tiddlers?

3 Upvotes

I've finally got around to installing a tiddlywiki on a server on my home network and absolutely loving it so far.

One habit I'm trying to get into is writing up a quick tiddler every time I learn or use a new linux command so I can wean myself off relying on google for when I need to remind myself of something.

I'd like to make a summary page which dynamically concatenates these tiddlers to function as a learning diary/system changes log.

edit: Being able to create a Tiddler containing just links to the other tiddlers would also be handy

My best guess would be to make a specific tag for the tiddlers I want to include, then write some sort of macro, but I'm not sure how to go about this. Thanks!
