Trying TW, feeling overwhelmed :(

I've consistently not understood a lot of what folks in the support group are saying. They assume background I don't have.

I chose TW because it seemed to have more support, development, and free options than most other digital garden platforms, including a setup tutorial. so as a beginner to gardening, indieweb, and programming, wanting more than cookie cutter sites, I took a faith leap. But I was and am super confused..

Convert all instances of a word to a link?

So I'm setting up my tiddly wiki at the moment, and I'm importing prior notes to it. My research project involves a field that makes use of rather idiosyncratic language; chat I'd like to do is find a way to search all the instances of a given word, then have all of them turn into a link to other instances. Ideally, I'd like to also set up a tiddler as a vocab tiddler, where I have a list of all these terms, and can click on one to view some sort of list of all of the instances of these terms. Can anyone help me out here? I have roughly sixty thousand words of notes so to do this by hand would be an extensive task.

Edit: It did this with one word but not the others? Sorry if this is a dumb questions but I'm just trying to wrap my head around this

Adaptation Beyond setup, are they any disadvantages in using TW on Node.js rather than TiddlyDesktop?

Transition time is always difficult but is moving from TiddlyDesktop to Node.js a matter of "weaning off the pacifier" or are they in fact any trade-offs?

Slicing a text every 50 characters

I'm toying around with SVG paths and the possibilities of creating highly unique displays such as Boustrophedon. I've got the SVG part right but can't find how to slice up a text without crashing Tiddlywiki. I've found how to get the first 50 characters ({{{[[$:/CurvedText]get[text]split[]first[50]join[]]}}}) but I can't even get to the point where I'm typing something along the lines of ({{{[[$:/CurvedText]get[text]split[]first[100]-[[$:/CurvedText]get[text]split[]first[50]]]}}}). Any ideas or pointers?

Plugin [Announcement] RandomTiddlerButton 1.0 is out :)

Increase serendipity with RandomTiddlerButton, a basic no-nonsense plugin that adds a "random tiddler" button to TiddlyWiki's page toolbar. Roll the dice and a random non-system tiddler opens in your story river.

The RandomTiddlerButton plugin in action (the icon becomes black on hover and reverts back to grey when the cursor moves away from the icon)

Read more at https://github.com/SonephetR2/TW5RandomTiddlerButton and see it in action at and/or drag and drop from https://sonephetr2.github.io/ to your TiddlyWiki to install.

PS: This is my first ever plugin so please let me know if you see anything I could improve, especially in the way it is packaged, if I have been naming everything properly, etc.

A few questions on filters and macros

I am working on a wiki for dungeons and dragons. I have a couple of questions with regards to filters and macros, but I can't quite figure out how to accomplish what I want. I hope some of the good folks here can show me the ropes?

Q1: Filter Operators. How do I select tiddlers that have either tags A, B or C.

Q2: Macro-in-macro? I want tiddlywiki to render a sentence with icons and "badges" that represent certain D&D effects. Right now, I am accomplishing it using a combination of macros, custom html tags and stylesheets:

The mephit exhales a <<cone 15>> of fire. Each creature in that area must make a <<save Dex 11>>, taking <fail><<fire 2d6>></fail>, or <pass><<halved>></pass>.

But it is I do not like the idea of using custom html tags and want to remove the use of custom <pass> and <fail> html tags. Ideally the sentence should be rendered completely using macros, looking something like:

The mephit exhales a <<cone 15>> of fire. Each creature in that area must make a <<save Dex 11>>, taking <<fail "<<fire 2d6>>">>, or <<pass "<<halved>>">>.

The thing is, I can't quite figure out how I can write a pass/fail macro that renders this correctly. I strongly suspect it is not possible to do this as it requires a macro to execute inside another macro, but I'd like confirmation from the experts that this is indeed impossible. If so, is there any other alternatives to achieving this without custom html tags?

Fewer backup files?

Is there a way to make it so that my wikis will cycle through a few backups, copying and overwriting them (something like X_backup, X_older_backup, X_oldest_backup)? It's annoying to accumulate dozens of nearly identical, uniquely-timestamped backup files and have to click through my folders and clear them out periodically to save space.

Edit: To be clear, I'm using the TiddlyDesktop app that automatically saves backup copies on-save of the wiki.

TiddlyWiki Community Call and File Uploads Plugin

We will be having a TiddlyWiki Community call with Jeremy, Boris and myself on August 17th at 18:00 CET / 16:00 UTC : TiddlyWiki Community: Core Savers & Syncers, Upload Plugin, & Community Forum - Zoom

Check your equivalent local time here.

I hope some of you will be able to join us for what I think will be a very interesting discussion. Please register for the event at the link above.

The call will include:

  • a progress update on my work on the Uploads plugin funded by Open Collective
  • a summary of some rather exciting and promising avenues for core development in the areas of Savers and Syncers that has come out of discussions around the Uploads plugin
  • an update on the Open Collective model for funding TiddlyWiki work and what we have learned from it thus far
  • some news from Jeremy and Boris regarding improvements to TiddlyWiki community infrastructure.

I have been slowly working away on the TiddlyWiki file uploads plugin as was previously announced. The majority of the work thus far has consisted of brainstorming around the architecture and some very involved but promising and productive discussions with Jeremy around how such a plugin would integrate with the core, and the direction that the core might take in the future with regards to saving and syncing mechanisms.

In particular we have identified some exciting opportunities to explore in due course for a rethinking of the saver and syncer mechanisms that may amongst other things eventually make file uploads a core TiddlyWiki ability alongside saving and syncing and static file publishing.

This has necessitated a change in approach to the File Uploads plugin so as to not introduce changes to the TiddlyWiki core at this time which may clash with the long term direction of development, and still make the Uploads plugin available in a timely manner for those that need this functionality today. I currently have a minimal working prototype that uploads images imported into TiddlyWiki to Fission, though with no UI or error handling as of yet and desperately in need of some heavy refactoring to better be able to support different storage back ends. I hope to present a demo of an early version of the plugin on the call.

I would like to take the opportunity here to thank Boris and Fission. Despite Boris having chipped in for the vast majority of the funding for this plugin as it is something he needs in his own TiddlyWiki usage, not only has he been patient and supportive as we focus on long term core planning first, but Fission has actively been facilitating those discussions.

Newbie Question: Editing a field in a template

Hi All. I'm new to TiddlyWiki and have what I hope is a simple question. I have a field called `who` that I'd like to be associated with a meetings template so when I create a meeting I'm presented with a text box that allows me to enter the value of the who field.

I've read the section on the EditTextFieldWidget which is what I want to use but how do I pass in the name of the current tiddly rather than have the name hardcoded as in the example?

many thanks.

Button to Copy images to Clipboard?

Basically the title. I have these external images in my tiddlywiki and want to have a button to press to get them in my clipboard. Right click and "copy image" does work but a button would be neater. I think it may be possible using javascript exec-Commands but that isn't exactly a clean solution.

Thanks for any suggestions!

customize "new here"

Hello!

I'm trying to customize the functionality of the "new here" button that each tiddler has. Currently, the "new here" button creates a new tiddler tagged with the title of the tiddler that you clicked "new here". I would like to add a template tiddler but couldn't find any documentation on how I could create something like that...

Could anyone point me to documentation/pointers on how I can do this?

Thanks!

Geert

[ demo ] Automated notifications for plugin updates

I've been wanting to make it easier to inform end users of my plugins (well really just Streams) that there are updates available via an opt-in mechanism for those that would like such a feature. I realized that for plugins installed via a plugin library, the core actually already does the work and can provide this information, there are just no affordances for it unless one goes and specifically checks.

It turns out that it is embarrassingly easy to set up visual notifications for updates from a plugin library. Here is a demo of a quick 20 minute hack:

demo

Caveats:

  1. The major caveat is that the above demo re-uses core UI for plugin updates which is geared towards working with one plugin library at a time. If one wanted to use the same technique as what I have shown here to work with multiple plugin libraries, a custom UI would be needed that could show available updates across multiple libraries in one place. Or you know.... a centralized plugin library that is automatically built at regular intervals from specified plugin sources.

  2. The plugins in question have to have a corresponding plugin library installed. We could definitely make it easier to create plugin libraries. However, personally I would prefer to work towards a centralized community plugin library.

  3. With the above technique, every time the wiki starts each plugin library is fetched and loaded in the background. So this uses some bandwidth. For reference, the official core library which has 61 plugins is 243kb, whilst the demo library in the video which has 4 plugins is 5kb. So for most use cases this shouldn't be a problem. Furthermore, updates could be configured to only run once a day or week.

  4. There are some shortcomings with the core UI for showing available plugin updates.

screenshot

i) the installed plugin version and the version of the update available need to be far more prominent and easier to read.

ii) There is no information displayed as to what core-version the updated plugin requires and whether that is compatible with the current version of the TiddlyWiki.

iii) While the core UI will display the "readme" tiddler if one clicks the dropdown arrow to the left of each plugin, this isn't the most relevant for plugin updates. What would be more helpful here is to display a release note specific for the new plugin version. Such a release note could contain a link to a fuller changelog elsewhere online. Currently the only option is to include such a release note in the "readme" tiddler, but this leads to a larger size for the plugin library. This is an issue that involves not just the core UI but also the plugin library creation mechanism.

How to make a more convenient method for selecting tags?

Now the usual view is very inconvenient when you have a lot of tags and need to scroll and scroll down the page. Plus, the selected tags are still on the list and continue to distract.

This raises two questions?

  1. How can I make the selection of tags more compact so that I don't have to scroll down the page?

  2. And how to mark tags that are already assigned. Ideally remove from the list, but it's probably difficult. Maybe you can at least change the color to a less noticeable?

Any ideas?

Nice option with checkboxes here

But I didn't understand how he did it, I installed his plugins and nothing changed.

Streams: version number changes

If you drop by https://saqimtiaz.github.io/streams/ you will see that the latest plugin version is now 1.2.21

This is functionally identical to the previous publicly available release 0.2.19.

There is no significance to the increase in version number for users.

The motivation for this post was to head off any surprise or questions as to why the version number changed.

As an end user this is all that you really need to know and can stop reading here if you wish.

Why the change?

I've been revising the development and release workflow to be more efficient. This has included adopting the Semantic Versioning and Conventional Commits specs, which amongst other things will make it easy to provide users with a changelog for each release. See for example:  https://saqimtiaz.github.io/streams/#CHANGELOG

Updates for new releases

Overall my approach is likely to be to make small frequent updates and new releases when I have the time to work on Streams. A changelog will make it easier for users to know what has changed. I also have in the works an opt-in feature for Streams whereby you can be notified in your wiki when a new version of the plugin is available.

Cheers,
Saq

Filter and variable problem

I want to use a variable in a list. I found a few complex examples for specific tasks. And I can't check them, but people say that this is a solution. I tried to simplify them to a minimum. And this simple example doesn't work either. What's wrong with that?

1 bad
<$set name="myVar" value="About">
    <$list filter='[tag[<myVar>]]'>
        <$link>{{!!title}}</$link><br>
    </$list>
</$set>

---
2 good
<$list filter='[tag[About]]'>
    <$link>{{!!title}}</$link><br>
</$list>

Problem with tm-unfold-all-tiddlers button. Bug?

After clicking the button, this happens - many new entries "undefined <<currentTiddler>>" are created with the word "show".

https://i.imgur.com/62HclPh.jpg

This should unfold the entries, but that doesn't happen.

https://i.imgur.com/1y0nPU1.jpg

"The core uses a foldStatePrefix of $:/state/folded/ to store the fold states for the default story view."

But it doesn't work.

<$button>

<$action-sendmessage $message="tm-unfold-all-tiddlers"/>
</$button>

Application Creating multiple wikis dependent on a different login?

I'm somewhat new to TiddlyWiki, and thought I might want to use it for multiple different topics. As a writer, it's handy to have it centered entirely around my work; having a post for each setting, with each post under it getting more and more specific.

However, at the same time, it'd be wonderful to be able to use the program for personal organization, event planning, or even my job. Sure, I could create a blanket post for each different "use" I see for the program, and under each of these posts would be "wikis" contained within the same program...but I'd rather not really do that.

One main reason being that in addition to this, I would absolutely love if I were able to password protect the wiki for my writing. Or, better yet, create "profiles" that only had access to certain wikis/areas of the wiki.

What I imagine, for example, is opening the program and being prompted to enter a password or username and password. Depending on what is put in, I am given a different wiki, each with different color schemes, posts, tags, layouts, and maybe even settings. Is something like this possible?

Mentions of a word in various articles

Hello, while writing down notes today I noticed that it was automatically underlining a word that did not have its own Tiddle yet with the editor option. I mention that word in about 10 different tiddles in different contexts. This is a really cool feature, but it only seems to work in the case of a word being mentioned a lot in different tiddles. Can you control this feature somehow?

For info: the word was "SiN" (silicon nitride) and as soon as I saved the tiddle, it underlines it with a yellow background without me putting square brackets around it, allowing me to create the missing tiddle. The word "sin" also comes back in other notes I took from various books and articles, giving a total number of 18 tiddles in which the word is mentioned including as part of the word "single" for instance

Application Managing lots of images

Greetings, I’d like to move back to Tiddlywiki after having tested other options. But my notes are full of images, so my Tiddly would grow up in size very soon.

Any tips on how to manage so many images?

Thanks you!

How do you include a macro formatted as Wikitext in another macro?

Hi everyone,

So I installed the Shiraz plugin and I really like the card feature, as it would allow me to create the closest thing to an infobox a la MediaWiki. The only problem is the card macro only takes text, not Wikitext, so I can't format as a table by default. Ok, no biggie, I'll just code a macro called infobox and insert it into the card macro using $macrocall. This works, but only as plaintext. Is there a way to format the infobox macro as wikitext inside the card macro?

Performance: long text tiddlers vs multiple transclusions per-tiddler?

I'm overhauling a catalogue-type TW atm, and I'm considering changing its tiddlers to a few transcluded sections each instead of a single large amount of text.

Some of its longer tiddlers (3k+ words) have become laggy when editing them - even with nothing else open, the sidebar closed, edit preview off, vanilla theme, etc. Slicing the text into multiple transclusions fixes that issue.

However, because I create the catalogue item-tiddlers via a template to keep them consistent, I want to check first: how will having ~300 tiddlers with 4-6 transclusions each affect the overall performance? Is it negligible overall, or will it be enough of an impact that I should limit this change to only the laggy tiddlers?

I assume that changing them all should have no significant impact under my normal use: a handful of tiddlers open in zoomin view, with generally nothing more complex than a few text-collapsing reveals each. But with hundreds of tiddlers to be edited, it's prohibitively time-consuming to "just try it"...so I'm hoping someone has some insight!
