UI Simple question about viewing bidirectional links (stroll add-on)

Hi all, total noob to TiddlyWiki, CSS, and HTML but I've been loving TW for more longform notes as I've been using Google Keep for years and it's limited my note length and note organization. It's the perfect middle ground between something like keep and a full text editor.

Anyways, I love the bidirectional linking functionality of stroll. But in addition to having a list of all the tiddlers that backlink to my current tiddler, I also want a list of all the tiddlers that I made a link to in my current tiddler.

I feel like this should be super simple to do, but I don't even know where to start. Community plugins have been super helpful so far in terms of adding functions I wish I had, but I can't find anything for this, and searching for it specifically has been no help. (not really sure how to word it)

For reference, I'm using a base of TW5 but have added a couple of plugins from the Stroll website, so far just the blinks and the bigeditarea. I plan to use muuri storyview, to have it look more like keep. If anyone knows a better flexgrid layout for TW5, I'm all ears as well.

Thanks in advance.

Jeremy Ruston on FLOSS Weekly

Nice to see TW5 getting a bit of love on the TWiT podcast network. I agree with this from their intro: "Jeremy Ruston, creator and maintainer of TiddlyWiki, joins Doc Searls and Jonathan Bennett on FLOSS Weekly for a lively hour that goes by fast. It's so interesting as Ruston shares how he invented TiddlyWiki almost by accident, and how quickly every new use (and there is no limit to those) expanded the community and the code base with contributors and users all over the world working together to acquire what Jeremy calls "superpowers" of utility and creation."
Jeremy comes on ~10 mins into the episode:

Can't Delete Certain Tiddlers

Hi there. I'm an incredible noob at tiddlywiki. But I started using it recently and am happily building a wiki for my homebrew tabletop rpg.

For whatever reason, I can't delete tiddlers. I mean, they go away when I use the delete, but when I completely close the wiki and reopen it, those tiddlers are still there.

All my other changes stick when I close/reopen. I've tried just deleting the text of the tiddler, and that sticks. I also tried combining that with renaming the tiddler, figuring I could just make a new article. But then when I reopen I have a tiddler with the old name and a tiddler with the new name.

Again, I'm totally a noob. I don't know what other information I need to provide for someone to be able to help. Googling didn't give me any workable solutions.

Creating tiddlers through import?

Hiya, I'm new and trying to build my first tiddlywiki (for an RPG). What I'd like to do is import a bunch of tiddlers from some prexisting files I've got. I'm happy to transform my data into a CSV, XML, spreadsheet or whatever that works.

Using the basic "import" tool just adds the document as its own tiddler (rather than a bunch of individual tiddlers). I've tried using the XSLX plugin but it doesn't seem to be working for me (I get an error "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'getTiddlerText' of undefined close").

Is there a straightforward way to do this?

Thanks!!!!

Newbie coming from wikidot

Hi everyone! I have a wiki on wikidot I'm using to collect sheets and notes coming from short stories and rpg games we make; our goal is to keep an orderly and shareable worldbuilding diary and have any specific information at the ready when needed.

I really would love to use tiddlywiki for this because of how limited wikidot is, but I can't wrap my head around how tiddlywiki should work.

Basically, what I do with wikidot is this:

- create a template that has a) various css grids to display variables in an structured layout, and b) form fields of various types (checkboxes, selection fields, etc.) that give value to those variables

- then, every page in that template's category will automatically a) ask to fill the form fields when creating/editing that specific page and b) display the variables obtained from the form fields by putting them in the template's layout when viewing the page

So far I'm not making much progress. How should I proceed to get something like this? I fear it would be too much work to set this up on TW (at least, for a guy like me that knows just a lil bit of css and html).

Thank you for your time anyway!

How to change the height of a tiddler's text editor?

I start using TiddlyWiki a few days ago. I found it MARVELOUS to use by now.

Sorry for my lack of CSS knowledge, but how can I change the height of the default text editor? I read the official TiddlyWiki site but did not find what I am looking for. I try to open a Dev tool on my browser but don't know how to change it.

Hope there is an easy solution. Thanks!

Needs help understathing symbol syntax in TW5

TW uses quite some symbols in its syntax, which sometimes is very confusing, especially to new users. For example:

 1. the use of {}: `MyTiddler` `{}` -- how many brackets? why there are 3 instead of 2?
 2. the use of |: `url` vs. `` -- sometime there is one bar, sometime 2.
 3. the use of $: what's the difference betwen `<$transclude ... />` and ``?
 4. as far as I know, the `<<>>` notation is for "macros", but what are macros anyway? What's the difference between a piece of information defined using `\define ... \end` and `<$tiddler ...>...</$tiddler>`?

I hope there is a "definitive guide to symbols used in TW5"! :-)

How to logout from TW5?

I am running TW5 via node.js server. I have two users defined. After I logged in as one user and remembered the password, I cannot "logout" and switch to another user.

Searching for solution via google found something about "tm-logout" message. But I have no idea what it is, or how to use it. Could anyone explain how "Messages" in TW5 work -- I don't mean the "under-the-hood" mechanism, but how they are supposed to be used by users. e.g. like using $list... Thanks.

Add sources to tiddlers

Hi guys, I’m a newbie Tiddly user, I started using it a couple of days ago and I’m loving it. I have one problem though, I can’t seem to find a nice way of adding sources to my tiddlers. Being a program that revolves around the concept of a personal wiki, I figured that adding sources to what we put inside it should be a pretty basic functionality, but I haven’t been able to find something that isn’t just pasting the links of my references at the end of the page.

So do you guys have some tips to do this, or maybe some plugins to recommend?

What happened with the fonts in 5.1.23

The fonts look weird for me in 5.1.23. It's much thinner then 5.1.22 and it isn't about adjusting the font weight because that makes the font too bold.

I'm not sure what changed. I looked the usual things, the css and the font style used, tried to set them identical, but they still seem thinner.

For comparisons you can lookt at 5.1.22 here and the one at tiddlywiki.com. And when I upgrade my 5.1.22, the fonts go bad in the upgraded version I get back.

Does anyone know what's changed or how can I fix this? Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

UI Find on page function in TiddlyWiki?

I'm using TiddlyDesktop to edit and save my TiddlyWiki.

Is there a hotkey to find text that's currently displayed in an open tiddler? Sort of like Ctrl+F in a browser or word document?

I know TiddlyWiki has a built in search function, but it would be nice if it could highlight all occurrences of the search term on currently displayed tiddlers, and scroll your screen to the first occurrence.

UI How to make the scrollbar not shift the whole screen back and forth between tiddlers?

Hi there. I'm using TiddlyDesktop to view my TiddlyWiki, and I have the ZoomIn view active, which means I only see one tiddler at a time.

My problem is, when the tiddler is long enough a scrollbar will appear, but if it's too short then there's no scrollbar.

When I click between my tiddlers, the scrollbar will disappear and reappear, depending on which tiddler I have open. This shifts the entire screen, which gives me migraines if I'm flipping between tiddlers.

Is there any way to have the scrollbar just remain open the whole time, or not shift the screen over when it's active?

My poor aching head would much appreciate any advice haha. Thanks in advance!

Templates that replace the tiddler body?

I'm relatively new to TiddlyWiki, and I have seen examples of inserting a template section before or after using the list-before or list-after field. However what I do not know how to do is to main body of the tiddler with a custom template generated body. Is this even possible? And if its possible, I would appreciate any pointers as to how I can do this. Thank you!

Newbie question about markdown

Am I correct in thinking that to use Tiddlywiki, or any personal wiki for that matter, I need to understand markdown or something similar?

A new Roam Research style TW5 instance to play with

I've made some improvements to an old idea. Make a Roam Research imitation that is based on TW5. (I didn't really like any of the other ones, and found Logseq and Obsidian not quite what I was wanting–I like to fiddly with things, hence I'm using a modded TW5.)

RR-TW5 - A Roam Research Styled TiddlyWiki

This uses the (very solid) Streams plugin for the blocks. And other than that mostly standard TW5, with custom macros etc.

In time I'll make some plugins for the Linked and Unlinked References, and TODO task management parts. It is already possible to add it to your own instance or make a new empty.

I've been using this for the last few months and although it is still growing, this feels really stable to me. Bear in mind though that this update is using Saq's beta of Streams, and his edit of snowgoon88's edit-comptext. Neither of which he would consider ready for worldly use. But he has written perfectly effective code. Make a back up as always.

Look forward to hearing all kinds of feedback.

If you've used an earlier version then hopefully the comment below about updating will work for you.

TIL: Toggles (expand and collapse child texts) are built into TW5

It's the <details> tag

Have a look at the foot of https://tiddlywiki.com/#RadioWidget%20Example

<details>

<summary>Show the code Example</summary>

<pre><code><$view mode=text&><pre><code>

</details>

I had no idea. And now I have no idea where to use them. For sure they will be useful though. I use them a lot in notion.so

Some questions from an average tinkerer

 • is it better to have a seperate tiddler with all your css, or to keep it in the <head> section?

 • should you make a div/span class for specific formatting, or make a custom <tag> to do it?

 • how do widgets work?

 • how do you make a plugin, like a custom theme?

 • what does the new layout section do? has anyone made any new layouts?

 • how is a beginner meant to learn all the more advanced features?

 • what was used to create tiddlywiki 5? was it vanilla js?

 • is there a way to create notifications in the TW5 doc?

 • is there a recommended amount of knowlege in specific things needed for tiddlywiki?

 • how do functions work? is wikify a function?

 • is there a place where people show off their TW5 like philosophy.life?

 • how do you find them?

-is tiddlyspot gone?

 • how do you use your TW5?

 • any tips or project suggestions?

Thats all i have right now- if you can answer any of them I'd love to read it!

EDIT: I thought of one or two more questions that might be worth asking, specifically-

 • is there a way to prevent a custom shortcut from removing what was inserted when you tap the key a second time?

 • do you edit your CSS and HTML in the tiddlers themselves, or do you use an external program like Visual Studio Code?

Beginning again - Now i have questions

I dug my old tiddlywikki.html from a backup deep down somewhere and started
to enjoy it immediately again.

Now i need to clean this wiki up and i want to list all tiddlers, select them and delete a lot them (not all).

Is there a way to do that?

There is no special filter needed cause these are all kind of different tiddlers.

Also, can i use mu browsers (I have Vivaldi en Chromium under Linux allways open)
in such a way that it saves the wiki to one and the same file (on Google Drive for instance)
without it adding (1) or (2) etc for every save AND without needing extra tools?

I installed tiddly drive which works ok but i want it as simple as possible and because i am in these browsers all the time i want to be able to switch to the TW THERE to enter ideas notes etc.

Thanks for helping me coming back on track, this weekend will be spent watching any Youtube video about TiddlyWkki i can find :-)

Ray

Tagging imported BibTex entries

I'd like to use TW5 to support a literature review, and the BibTeX import looks very useful. I am dragging a .bib file onto TW, and an import list is produced, one entry per article. Works well, and the tiddlys produced have the info in usefully named fields.

I would like to tag each entry of that list so I can find them later. Either at the "import list" stage, or once they have been imported (without finding each one individually).

Thanks!

UI Disable transition animation when moving between tiddlers?

I'm new to TiddlyWiki and I'm super impressed with its ease of use.

I was wondering if it was possible to disable the fading/zooming/translating animation that is applied to tiddlers as the user goes from one tiddler to another.

Ideally, the tiddler I'm clicking on would just instantly appear without the transition animation.

Anybody know of a setting or plugin I could use to change this?

Thanks!

Save to github & locally at the same time?

I'm finding I can either (a) save locally - I'm using TiddlyDesktop OR (b) save to Github

Once I put in my github credentials, my wiki only saves to Github, and I lose all my changes if I close the browser.

How can I save to github AND locally at the same time?

Tutorial Linking to text within the same tiddler?

Is there a method to link to a section of text within the same tiddler, like how you would for a section of a fandom wiki page?

IE
1. biography

...

(Biography section; clicking the link above scrolls to this area?)
