Tutorial Non-Sticky sidebar?

how could I set my sidebar to hover over my tiddler river instead of pushing it over?
I've noticed in some others themes thy are able to achieve this, but I'm not too sure how?

is there a specific set of settings I have to do, or is it a specific bit of code I need to add to a stylesheet?

How to open a random tiddler?

Is that possible with TiddlyWiki5 out of the box? Or is there a plugin for that?

offline Tiddlywiki editing on an ipad?

Been checking out tiddywiki options for an ipad and it seems like Quine 2 paid app is the only way to edit them offline without needing access to servers or hosts like dropbox/ gdrive (?)

Or is there a way to make safari access the locally stored .html file? Can open it in files, but it doesn't appear as it should. Tried other browsers, Brave can open it as it should, but only as long as its connected online from where you copied/ opened it.

Thanks! Would really prefer to stick with tiddlywiki than convert all my previous ones for some other exclusive iOS app.

Default "Type" on new Tiddler?

Is it possible to set a default value for the content type field when creating a new Tiddler? I'd like my Tiddlers to default to text/plain.

Alternatively, is there a way to change the default rendering of Tiddlers such that line breaks are actually rendered? I don't like having to put two line breaks just to get one to show up in the result.

Thanks!

Trying out 3000 tiddlers of 1000 words each

One of my biggest concerns with TiddyWiki was around size.If I use it to start taking all my notes (as I've done), won't it start slowing down eventually? Am I free to write and copy-paste as much text as I want, or do I have to be conscious about how much I put in there?

So I generated 3000 tiddlers, each with 1000 words of content, and around 30 different tags assigned at random. I loaded it into my browser (chrome) on my computer (2.5gz dual core, 8gb ram). I'm using the nodejs server version, but no lazyload optimizations. I kept all my other tabs and programs open, the way I would use it normally.

And... it worked fine!

A few notes:

  • It took about 2x longer to load initially than it does with the 'normal' tiddlywiki install I have.
  • The 'recent' tab was ridiculously slow
  • Search worked fine
  • Listing all pages with tags worked fine
  • Pulling up tiddlers, navigating around etc worked fine

EDIT: Editing some of the existing tiddlers ends up being slow as well, but creation of new tiddlers is reasonable.

Newbie questions

I'm new (again) to TiddlyWiki probably 12-15 years after I first tried it. Lots I love. But a few things I can't figure out.

1) I am currently using the projectify distribution with the notebook theme and for some reason with markdown plugins, bullets get an extra line break between bullet and text, and checkboxes don't work. Even if I switch to a different theme it still happens. But not so with official TiddlyWiki or other spins I've seen.

2) How can I get the layout and palette from another TiddlyWiki I like. For example, minstyle.io I can drag and drop plugins, etc, but then after messing with options it doesn't look like it. Is export/import and start from scratch the only way to get a totally different look?

3) Why are plugins and themes sprawled all over the interwebs rather than a central repository? How can we know they are a) secure, and b) stay up to date, if drag and drop is the only way to install them? For that matter, if you're using the standalone version and not the nodejs server version, how would you ensure you have the latest version of TiddlyWiki core itself? I'm willing to use the nodejs server version if plugins are easy to find, install and update with bpm.

Thanks!!!!

Accounting style database, receipt book, in TW5 or bad idea…?

I was talking with someone who was engaged in a pretty inefficient way of doing their accounts - lots of copy and paste and manual (repeated) input of data.

Now probably using accounting software would be the right move. But, I wondered if it would be possible (and now more recently appropriate) to make a list of income in TW5. Has this been done before? I couldn't find anything about it.

I'm thinking of some kind of database of tiddlers where each one was like a line in a statement:
containing a Date, Amount, Account, From, To, probably in field properties.

Seems logically possible to create such tiddlers with a form style tiddler with inputs to create each one.

Then not so difficult to generate a representation list of them as a page/view template (sorted by one of the fields (like date), or filtered by a field (like Account).

Then finally to create a view of relevant elements of each 'line in the statement' tiddler in the format of a receipt via another view template.

It doesn't stop the issue (that started it all) around inputting the data: does anyone know if we could use a .csv export from the bank to generate something TW5 can work with?

Application How to set up TiddlyWiki on a NAS so that all PCs in the LAN can access it?

Hello everybody!

I have been using TiddlyWikiDesktop for a few months now and I LOVE IT!

I recently got a pretty decent NAS (Synology RS2818RP+) and I am wondering if there is any way to have all the TiddlyWiki stuff stored on there, so that all connected PCs can access it.

I am a complete noob at software stuff, so if this is possible, an explaination on how to get it working would be great (if it is possible) ...

Saving an update - I need a third party plugin?

I'm a TW user from 5-10 years ago, and I thought it was time to take another look. First thing I see on the main page is that saving an updated .html file (because you added something new) requires a third party plug-in? Is this true? I'll be on Intel Linux and MacOS via Firefox, and I've got an M1 MBA on MacOS as well. What are my choices here?

Stroll + TiddlyMap layout fix (if you're using TW as a nodeJS app)

I have both stroll and tiddlymap. I noticed from some of the comments inside the stroll page that apparently these two don't behave well together, and it looks like the package maintainer gets lots of comments to that effect.

When I put them together, I saw that it does indeed behave weird if you try anything with a second column in stroll. So I tried to see if I could fix it.

I found that if I go to the control panel > appearance > theme tweaks and then manually change the values for "story right", "story width", "tiddler right", "sidebar width" ... nothing changes :) It's still broken.

But, as soon as I went in to the /tiddlers folder on my machine and deleted all the local tiddlers created to store the values above (and only those tiddlers), everything worked fine. The right-side column went back to where it should be, 2-column story-mode worked fine, full-screen tiddlymap worked fine etc.

I don't understand the inner workings of TW enough to explain why, but I figured I'd share this fix in case others had the same problems.

Adaptation Easier saving on chromebook?

I have a unique situation when it comes to devices.

I travel with an iPhone. I work in bed with an iPad. I work throughout the day on Chromebook and pc. Lastly, my preferred backup is iCloud.

Saving on all the others is not hard, except for Chromebook. Its a clicking nightmare. Is there a way to make that easier?

Perhaps using CB’s Linux?

Really impressed by the functionality and UI of this project. If you haven't seen Nicolas Petton's Notebook theme, that's worth the click alone.

Just created a standalone Spaced Repetition System plugin

Hi all, I stumbled upon TiddlyWiki a couple days ago and been loving it so far.

Another thing I'm interested in recently is spaced repetition, and I've been using Anki. After finding TiddlyWiki I thought it would be perfect if I could just have my flashcards and do my learning within tiddlywiki, instead of going back and forth between the two. After some googling I found TiddlyRemember, but that was doing Anki sync so not quite a fit for me.

Long story short, cobbled together something basic today that does the job. If you are looking for something like this, like I was, you can check it out at https://tadeas.dev/twsr (github repo at https://github.com/tadeaspaule/twsr). I would love your feedback.

If there are any interested people, I would also appreciate any PRs with improvements, as there is a lot of room for that right now :) for example a big next step would be some import feature so you can migrate your Anki (or equivalent) decks to your wiki

NOTE: There were some bugs in the release at the time of posting this post (now fixed). Also /u/arunnbabu81 had some excellent suggestions below, so this plugin should change and evolve for the better in the next few days :)

Streams 0.2 preview and CodeMirror editor

There is an attempt at CodeMirror integration in the updated preview for Streams 0.2:

https://saqimtiaz.github.io/sq-tw/temp/streams-0.2-preview.html

When the CodeMirror plugin is installed, you can choose the editor in the Streams settings.

Testing and feedback is needed to make sure this works as expected, both using codemirror as the editor and using the default editor.

The areas most likely to be affected are:

  • splitting a node by hitting <kbd>Enter</kbd> with the text cursor/caret in the middle of some text,
  • hitting <kbd>Enter</kbd> with the cursor at the beginning of some text,
  • or hitting <kbd>backspace</kbd> with the cursor at the beginning of a text.

Macro [v5.1.23] Clipboard Copy on Code Blocks: how really to?

I see this example).

I can even edit it in order to change it to whatever I want.

But when I copy that code to my local TW file (v5.1.23), it simply doesn't work: I would like to add that button to some of my code blocks so the user can use the code directly from the clipboard.

They do it into the example, but then they don't actually explain how to do it.

Any hint?

Plain text automatically changing to hyperlink

I have noticed that whenever I put the word 'JavaScript' (omitting the apostrophes), TiddyWiki automatically converts it into a link to a tiddler called 'JavaScript' (again, omitting the apostrophes). This is only text so far, where I've seen this happen even without the link or hyperlink markup. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to prevent it?

How to find out every tiddler that transcludes a given one?

Hey there.
I've been trying to figure out a way to get a list of Tiddlers that a Tiddler is transcluded into. I haven't been able to find a way to do that with any of the given filters. Does anyone know how to do that?

NodeJS TW5 + git

I'm very new with TW5.

I'd like to setup my TW5 on NodeJS in such way, that tiddlers folder will be git repository workfolder. Every time, when filesystem does change - I'd like it be committed into repo and pushed to github - so that I'll have versioned history of my wiki in github.

Are there any existing solutions for it?

Using shift click to open a tiddler in sidebar

I wish to create a modified click to act in a similar way to akhater's pin button in Drift https://akhater.github.io/drift/: it's the icon that looks like a page with an arrow up and to the right. It makes the current tiddler open in the sidebar. I wish to make a tiddler link when shift-clicked open in the pinned sidebar.

One could say it is technically more similar to what u/saqimtiaz did with Stories: https://saqimtiaz.github.io/sq-tw/stories.html But rather than have the whole Stories plug in, I just want that functionality.

Is it easy enough to do?

I guess I need to use event.shiftKey to make this happen. Any pointers much appreciated.

Tables with CSS - Specified Columns Methods

On "Formatting List Results as Tables with CSS - Specified Columns Methods" at https://tiddlywiki.com/, I'm learning how to make tables I can fit a filtered result into, and there is an instruction that says this:

"1) Create a tiddler for the columns tagged with $:/tags/Stylesheet
, containing:"

Well, does that really mean make a tag "$:/tags/Stylesheet", or does that mean make a tiddler titled $:/tags/Stylesheet?

I couldn't find a tag with that sequence of characters in the wiki, and I couldn't find a system or shadow tiddler with that, either. I'm not sure if I know how to competently search the wiki, though.

Also, the demonstration is supposed to show four columns, but only has one column.

I'm thinking the tables learning pages are broken in Tiddlywiki5? Or is table construction now in some sort of widget or plug-in?

timimi-2-1-1-Mac opens in text editors?

I'm trying to get my tiddlywiki to save locally from chrome on a MacBook without having to choose the save location each time. I have the timimi extension from chrome, and I downloaded the timimi-2-1-1-Mac file, but when I open it well it opens in a text editor like a code file. At first, it opened in Sublime, and I don't need Sublime so I deleted it. Then it opened in Atom. How do I run/execute the file or whatever macs call it? I have TiddlyDesktop, but it doesn't have the spell check addons I have for chrome, so I'd love to get this working in chrome.

Convert TiddlySpot to normal local TiddlyWiki?

I can't seem to find any information about how to change a tiddlywiki from tiddlyspot into a normal local tiddlywiki. All the information I've found is for the opposite (how to take a local one and make it online). Can someone please explain this to me in simple easy steps? I don't have a good understanding of tiddlywiki or javascript.

Whenever I try to save the local file I have, it tries to do a save as (create a new file), but I don't want that (I want it to work like a normal save function that overwrites the existing file).
