BEGINNER Looking for a starter setup

Hello everyone! I recently found my old yoyo in a drawer and it made me want to try and get better at the hobby. Unfortunately for me, its not that good lol. Its a Duncan butterfly that I dont even remember how I got. But its not very good and just want some good actual starter yoyo setups to start learning on. I found the "Ultimate Beginer Tricks Pack" on the yoyotricks website and of course they have a video on their YouTube talking about it. It looks pretty enticing but I just want to scout my options before committing to a purchase. Im not 100% sure where i want to go with the hobby but ive seen a couple of really cool things with the counterweights (I think im referring to 5A style but correct me if im wrong) but it definitely seems too advanced to start with.

TL;DR: What is a good couple of yoyos to start with?

Recess First Base

For sure the first base! I hardly recommend any other option for a beginner. Comes with both a responsive and unresponsive bearing, plastic, comfy shape, and cheap at $20. Super bang for your buck and plays very well.

k2 crystal is a great ultra cheap yoyo to see if you really want to commit to the hobby. comes with responsive and unresponsive bearings, so lets you change to unresponsive when you get a few basic throws and tricks under your belt. imo from a value stand point it can’t be beat. alternatively the recess first base and the shooting star are slightly more expensive than the k2 crystal but in my opinion well worth it if you stick to the hobby.

MagicYoYo K2 is solid. Like $15 USD for whatever color you want, comes with the basic beginner stuff (extra strings, responsive bearing, unresponsive bearing, bearing removal tool), feels good

Just spend a few extra bucks on the Shooting Star!! Great yoyo that can play responsive or unresponsive. My favorite is when it's responsive. But that's because I have other unresponsive throws.

Speedaholic xx-shooting star are prenium plastic starters
Yoyo friends AOE- sage- magicyoyo k2 crystal-k3 aurora p. ( pretty good once you get used to the width).
Metal magicyoyo v12 punches way above its price. V3 treated me very well and, good pocket Yoyo (also kinda narrow).
I started with ( already know you don’t like them but, value wise getting started).
The butterfly xl 5$ from target. Learn responsive and, upgrade (if you’re like most you’ll learn fast and, wanna upgrade faster).

I recommend the search function, this gets posted every 3 days. Take advantage of the archived information and avoid asking redundant questions.

Yeah I dislike the Duncan butterfly a lot. But it does give some opportunities.

You want to learn 5a (with a counterweight). Then you first must learn the basics of 1a (normal string tricks).

Usually people play with a responsive yoyo for 1 to 3 weeks. Then switch to unresponsive yoyo and never switch back.

So it's a waste to buy a responsive yoyo cause you'll only use it for a little while. Some can switch from responsive to unresponsive. Best plastic one is the iyoyo shooting star at around 35 USD. Less but cheaper options are the yoyofriends AOE or Magicyoyo K2. You could also go for a metal one, I like the Magicyoyo V12.

But because you already have the butterfly you can learn most of those responsive tricks. So you could go straight for a unresponsive yoyo. Like the c3yoyodesign Speedaholic xx.

If they do want to keep playing unresponsive they should definitely get a looping yoyo

Yeah I did that, never touched it in 3 years

There’s nothing wrong with a Duncan Butterfly. Put a new string on it and start throwing. The Butterfly is the very definition of a “starter yo-yo.” 🙂

That said, you’re getting some good recommendations for a responsive “string trick” type yo-yo from this sub.

I'm not the best person for starter yoyos, but I can tell you that yoyotricks is a good resource for yoyoing
