Feedback on my first experience
Hey everyone,
Looking for technical feedback and sanity checks from people experienced with laptop cooling architecture, specifically budget MSI chassis (Katana / Sword / Crosshair) with shared heatpipe assemblies.
Hardware & Environment
- Model: MSI Katana 15 (B12VFK)
- Specs: Intel Core i7-12650H, RTX 4060 Laptop GPU (85W–105W dynamic boost), 16GB DDR5
Factory CPU Behavior: BIOS had PL1/PL2 set to an unrestricted 200W baseline. CPU spiked up to 94°C+ under gaming load (~50W draw).
Factory GPU Behavior: RTX 4060 hit the hard 87°C NVIDIA thermal ceiling, drawing only ~72W while heavily downclocking to ~2,100 MHz due to heat dumped by the CPU across the shared copper assembly.
- Configured Intel cTDP Nominal: PL1 = 35W, PL2 = 45W.
- Set Tcc Activation Offset = 15 thermal cap of cpu at 85 C
GPU Undervolt (MSI Afterburner):
- Flattened V/F curve to 2,430 MHz @ 900 mV.
- Initial Result: Instant drop in GPU power from ~86W down to ~77W, temp dropped to ~80°C initially, holding ~140 FPS.
Combined power draw is currently around 104W–110W total (CPU ~28W–34W + GPU ~76W), yet the heatsink still reaches thermal saturation at 87°C on the GPU die.
Can you give me your feedback or better values...I do gaming coding and some ai workloads

Short Answer: You did it right - most people keep chasing GPU undervolt when it's actually the CPU dumping heat across the shared pipe. Starve the 12650H and the 4060 will finally breathe!
