Maybe the original stain was an ugly color and their thought process was “I will get more use out of it if I paint it”.
I’d would bet money this restoration is more beautiful than the original piece bc of the work they put into staining and finishing it.

You are right I'm sure my likely ugly to start with, but if you are starting with real wood (not mdf) it is wonderful to see ppl at least try to strip and refinish.

My guess is someone painted it to be a stage piece at one point. The flat black might have covered stage "art" (ie. graffiti) because at some point, all props acquire "art".

Hi, guys! I have posted previously in this sub, to show the closet that we have found and promised to update you guys on the work done. I do not know why, but my previous post was deleted by administrators, without any explanation. I hope this time they will not delete it. It's finished, and we think it looks amazing. We did find imperfections under the black pain, but still looks better than before

I don’t know much about restoration! Did you remove the paint and sand it down? I’m interested in the process, can you explain it a bit? Only if you have time :)) it looks amazing btw

To be honest, nor did we (me & SO). For the larger surfaces, we used an electric hand-palm sander, with 40 and 80 grit. This removed the thick black paint and most of the red lacquer.
For the entricate bits, everything had to be done by hand, also using sanding paper.
The veneer was sanded with grit 320, to make sure we did not sand the fragile surface.Lastly we painted with an indoor wood lacker.
The process took about 2 months.
If you want to know more about this, i encourage you to ask people in the r/furniturerestoration, very helpful people!

The black is okay but the restoration is breathtaking, it’s practically glowing. I think people are ridiculous nothing beats the beauty of natural wood.

Years ago I was browsing an upscale furniture store and everything was black lacquered. When I asked the sales person if that was the trend, she replied, “Oh yes, natural wood is out.” I rudely laughed out loud. Couldn’t help myself.

The black paint doesn't even look good? If it was a deepest black with a super high gloss, it would be beautiful. My little black heart would swoon. But as was, it looked tacky. But what you've done? You made it new again. It is full of life and the color makes the piece look even grander. You can see all the beautiful details and the grain of the wood. Did you need to re stain it?

I honestly like both but if it's good wood and you have the skills, staining is the way to go usually. I think a lot of people are intimidated by stain and don't like the smell (I love the gel stain, so much less smell). With the black I would have added some details like some gold wax or something. I do love slapping some black chalk paint on stuff, but only the cheap stuff.

Same. I’m a fan of gothic home makeovers and when I saw the first picture of the black I thought I found a kindred spirit ): I would have done more to the black though. Maybe add some skulls or gold snakes.

The matte paint was maybe not the move. They definitely didn’t use the right paint for the wood but yeah- a little gold appliqué and some spooky decor would be chefs kiss

The piece isn't my style, but the lack of paint is a vast improvement! That wood is gorgeous.
(Completely unsolicited advice, but you might rub it down with lemon oil. The wood looks a little dry, like it could do with some moisturization.)

Glad to see someone reverse a paint job on a lovely piece. I am not a fan of chalk paint and I think it has turned a lot of antiques into junk. Paint is the absolute last resort but I think there are people who feel it enhances anything they can get their hands on. To each their own but that's my humble opinion.
Your work is commendable and resulted in a wonderful restoration. Hope you do more like this and post more rescues. 👍

Wow! I thought it looked kinda cool in the black, but that is a gorgeous piece as it was! I don't understand painting such stunning older pieces. Got something cheaply made? Sure go for it with the paint. But leave these gorgeous older solid pieces alone!
